I had the same 96 Intruder in the same color. I have a garage full of Kawasaki's and KTM's, but I still miss that bike. It's the only cruiser I would buy again. My only complaint was the slight shaft drive effect when down shifting entering a corner. I would have liked dual front disks and the 97-later 5 speed.
A couple of thoughts... The exhaust. Cobra and Jardine make a full system. Both sound near identical and will run about $400. No rejet will be needed either. You can even go with K&N drop in filters and the exhaust and not need to change the jets. Second is the tires. You didn't say what you want, but I ran Avons on my 1400 and were very pleased with them. Long life and sticky in all weather. You may also want to invest in Designer clutch springs. You will eventually notice a slip and when you do, don't waste your money on aftermarket springs.
I have used Avon as well, and Very Pleased with them. BUT... I went up to the 200 x 15 on the rear! It DOES fit, but I found it easier to put on the bike UN-Inflated, and then inflate afterward. But it works great, and rides great... and LOOKS Great! And with the slightly taller diameter, it will give you better mileage. And I never noticed any loss of Acceleration. I also changed to Progressive rear shocks, about 3/4 shorter than stock... and that matched well with the larger tire... eliminated the 'gap' without the tire rubbing... But be Mindful if you are carrying riders or a load of gear for travel...
My first bike was an Intruder 800, and I still have her, even though I'm an FXR guy now. I still love the look and feel of the intruders, the sound and growl. One thing I do NOT like about them is changing stock air filters. I don't mind the battery being on the bottom, but I swear if this bike had existed in WWII the Nazis would have forced Jews to replace Intruder Air filters as a way to break their spirit and sap their will to live. Other than that, I love the bikes.
V4 Motorcycles are awesome. I have a 84 Honda Sabre 700. the camshaft problem was more due to improper use. people letting it idle too much and riding in too high a gear causing too low rpms which caused again low oil. theres kits to fix the early Honda v45 and v65 engines. by the time the 90s magnas came out the cam problems were basically fixed. you can get a v4 in hondas interceptor line.
You spoke about which tires you want that handle amazingly but you didn't say what brand of tires!! Could you please let us know which tires you had in mind? Thanks for the video!
re upgrades - get engine bars with foot pegs to stretch out ; modulated headlight (alternates high/low beams), modulated / flashing brake light ; for trips a wind shield-it will rain ; tubeless wheels & tires ;
flashing brake lights are huge for preventing being rear ended. However as far as I know you cannot use tubeless tires on wheels with spokes, a tube is required with the tire.
I sold my 91' Intruder 750 to raise cash to buy a truck . Then I traded my 86' Kawasaki Eliminator 600 for an 88' Intruder 1400 . It seems like the 1400 picks up where the 750 left off .
Great video bro, have a94,1400...do u still have the bike? Tryna find out what tires you ended up on?...get ready to replace...brickstone,rear.michlin.front.
The old Magnas from the 80's had the cam issue. The new, Gen 3 Magna 750 that was made from 1994 to I think 2002 essentially had a detuned VFR750 motor with no cam issues. They did tend to eat regular/rectifiers tho, but what Honda didn't in the 90's?
They came in 750 and 1100 from 83-86. Then only 750 in 87/88. And then again as a 750 from 94-03. The first two gens were shaft driven and the Gen3 was chain driven. BUT, having said that, even the smaller of the V4's spank the crap out of the VTwins for power. The other nice thing is the 750's were much lower than the 1100.
Indeed. Do It With Dan has a 90's model. I just got done putting mine back together (daggum fuel boogers clogged my high speed jets) and can't wait to give it another 0-60 test.
Had a 86 700 (V42) loved it, but wanted more powaaaaah :-) so changed to a 86 1100 (V65) loved the looks and the engine is lovely, came to hate the bike itself shortly after due to its high center of gravity,, Honda spoiled that bikes handling completly by rasing itsseat height by 8cm (engine is 6 cm higher) im 186 cm with long legs so no issues there i sat great on it, but now its out the door with a boot in its ass, going for the Intruder 1400 now :-)
Man, when you described the issues with the air filters breaking down, the particles getting into the carbs., damage to the carb. jets, the condition of the bike dying out at idle speed, all mirror my 2002 Intruder vs1400 glp to the last detail! I purchased this bike about 6 weeks ago and within a week experienced hard start, wouldn't idle, one cylinder cutting in and out when accelerating. I put the bike in the shop and the following issues were found. Fuel pump was bad, air filters had decomposed and gotten nto both carbs. requiring a carb. rebuild. Replaced pilot and main jets on both carbs. Replaced spark plugs , flushed fuel system out and replaced fuel lines and filter, new air filters, oil change , replaced both front and rear tires with Dunlop, replaced battery, tuned and synced carbs with oversized jets. Fifteen hundred dollars later, the bike starts and idles perfectly soon as the starter button is hit. No choke needed at all..I have custom pipes on bike,, and with the new set of Dunlop tires, oversized carb. jets , this Intruder rides and performs great! The bike only has 6200 miles on it. I also find the handling of the bike to be top heavy and not well balanced starting and stopping. I attribute this to the v twin engine height? Overall, it's a solid v twin cruiser,! Be sure to use OEM air filters on this bike, and keep the maintenance up.
My VS800 has 5 gears but I'm jealous of your 4 gears because they're so tall... on my bike I have to shift every 10mph... and when I pull on the throttle, I only get 1 second of gas before I have to shift again (and repeat)!
I also changed my handlebars and the bike handles so much better. You can find my video on line . It is about 2:45 long. My bike is the same color as your bike. Just look for 1998 Suzuki Intruder VS 1400 and I think it will pop up . it is there somewhere. You can hear my pipes and see the new handlebars. It makes the bike look more badass. Did you ever find my video of my 1400 intruder with the cobra pipes on them? The cobra pipes are a complete exhaust for around $380.00 and the sound is amazing.
@@InvictvsNox Why did you sell the 1400 intruder? If you did you want to buy my 1981 Yamaha XS 1100 special. 4 into 1 MAC exhaust new tires rejet carbs. K&N air filters new handlebars new grips .
Well that sucks sorry to hear about that. I hope you're all right. I hope that did not make you stop riding. Hopefully you didn't get hurt at all. The 1400 intruder is a nice bike I have one myself I have the 98. I did a lot of modification to mine. Seriously dude I'm really sorry to hear about your bike that sucks
cobra pipes sound great, but are cheap quality. I would definitely opt for Vance and Hines any day over cobras from here on out. the cobras for 1400 were just too thin walled. tires... Avon, Michelin or pirelli. in that order :)
Get some Kuryakan footpegs with the the bike specific adapters. You notice a huge difference. Do not lower the bike it will not handle properly. You will be disappointed. The bike will not handle as well.

They simply sound awful tho, sound like a raspberry rolling around a tin can, they are way too quiet. Changing the pipes on mine was an absolute nightmare, the air intake needed to be resized, it needed a re-jet, I've never spent so long tuning a motorcycle and every now and then it still seems to run a little rich. the wiring is also a rats nest and was also a nightmare. If you like to mod these bikes are not fun to play with. Something I wish I new before buying.
Once my tax return comes through, I'm buying a 97 vs1400 from my buddy. I intend to put 2" cobras on it, k&n intakes, rejet it, put a bigger gas tank on it, throw saddle bags on it, might put some mini apes on it and change the tires and suspension. Also might throw 1500 heads on it. Did you change the tires and suspension? If so what did you go too?
+InvictvsNox Hey thanks for answering! I'm buying one of these soon and wanted to know the top speed it could get but there are not many videos on youtube.
leogv90 I don't mean to discourage you, but if I learned anything about them with my short time with mine, it's that they aren't properly counterbalanced engines. Loads more torque than the 800, but it vibrates quite at bit at highway speed. You may find a big Honda twin or maybe another make to be better in that regard. Top speed should be higher than the 800, but the 800 will beat it in acceleration.
