I came across my great grandads ID tags last year. He had all 3 tags, aluminium/brown/red. In surprisingly great condition too, everything is still visible and clear. He was in the Army Service Corps - Mechanical Transport. Great vid though, nice to get a bit of history to go with them 👍🏻

The American army didn't come out with dogtags until the early 1900s. There were some privately purchased identity disks during the American Civil War, as well as brass stencils used for marking gear and kept as ID tags but nothing was issued by the army on either side. As you can imagine, identifying casualties was a huge issue

E. H. Allenby is coming up in the next few months. Contrasted to the Armistice of

I heard that British Army personnel is only allowed to carry ID tags when deployed. When did this start ? After WW2 or later in 50s or 60s ?

As far as i am aware soldiers and sailors who were already in the Army and Navy that entered the war all had aluminium tags. The fibre tags became the standard once conscription started in 1915. However British Soldiers who served in the Middle Eastern theatre were still issued aluminium tags as standard even after 1915.

After world war 2, did National Service men get issued with id tags when sent out to other countries and if so was it aluminium or the fibre tags
