I’m confused. I have eye allergies and dry eye. I’ve started using pataday to calm down the inflammation due to allergies (which dry my eyes out) but it contains BAK. Similarly, allaway preservative free is also apparently not great for dry eye. What can I use for my eye allergies that doesn’t worsen dry eye? I don’t want to leave it untreated, but don’t want to harm my dry eye while trying to treat it
That is a really good question! I often do reach for preservative free alaway. Oral antihistamines can sometimes help but often makes dryness worse. @@DoctorEyeHealthgotcha, perfect thanks I will try these! Thanks for your content, binge watching your videos has been extremely useful for me! My dry eye doctor said not to be concerned with BAK since I’m only using once a day, not using it 5, however I’ve seen a few places on the internet (your videos included) saying not to use anything with BAK at all.
Also, see if you can treat allergy issues. That made a big difference for my dry eyes, although I was skeptical it would. Hormonal changes can contribute too (thankful for HRT!).
I had eyelash mites that migrated to my cornea and were eating it. I had no symptoms so was lucky to go to the eye doctor who detected it. She gave me an expensive tea tree oil foaming soap. After using it I started to make my own foaming soap with a tea tree oil liquid soap.
I quit using face products with retin A. Interesting to me that no doctor even thought about that. I have had to figure out everything on my own. I also use muro 128 ointment at bedtime. Wind and heat are the enemy.. even from your oven. I shut my worst eye when using it and step back a few seconds when I open the door. I run a humidifier from october to may. I have year round allergies, but gave up antihistamines. I do not like xiidra as well as restasis, because I think i have a slight allergic reaction to it, but my doctor insists that it's better. I found omega 7 may be helpful.. you have to stay on top of it, or you wind up with corneal abrasions, which are horribly painful.. Not to mention when they Drexel the surface of your eyeball off. People don't realize how horrifically painful this condition can be.
OMGG... the 7 Dry Eye Bad Habits making its symptoms worse!!! I didn't pay attention to these things! Thank you for your helpful videoand good advice! Thanks for doing this
What about eye make up, especially mascara and dark kohl pencils to outline the eyes? If you remove it before bed, and cleanse your eyelashes, is that enough?
Doctor Allen, I have a question.. I take Omega 3 supplements everyday 1 capsule (300mg EPA, 1000mg DHA, 10mcg Vit D3) and the when i dint take it for like one or 2 days, my eyes starts to bother me also i feel like my nerves or my muscles can't function good.. So what is the reason?? And for how long from now should i be taking the omega3??
I don't drink habitually. But years ago, I had some local brewed beer, and my eyes dried out pretty quickly after dinner. I couldn't open my eyes and had to get someone to go to the drug store to get some antihistamines. But from then on, I would have some major brand beer without any problems. Is that a reaction to a particular ingredient in the local brew or something else?
I just had lasik a month ago. I am seeing a pimple on the inside of my eyelid. I tried the hot compress method, it hasn’t gone away, but also hasn’t gotten worse. Suggestions? Maybe oil gland blockage? Any OTC stuff to treat it?
There are a couple of things a bump or pimple on the eyelid could be. Do you have a follow up for the LASIK scheduled? If so, I would definitely ask them for an assessment. Various eyelid styes usually do go away on their own but can be helped with warm compresses, sometimes medication can be prescribed. Because the eye is technically still healing from the LASIK, best to consult a local eye doctor, just to be sure.
Thanks for these videos. Any hormone in particular you think affects? I have increased growth hormone and IGF1 because of a tumour on pituitary glands. Started getting eye discomfort and headaches last year. Doctors operated to remove as much and now they might do radiotherapy to get rid the remaining.
I have had a few things done to my left eye. The first procedure was a Trabeculectomy of the left eye to reduce intraocular pressure. My eye doctor discovered i had a viral infection in the left eye. After using an oral medication to reduce the infection, My next procedure was a cataract removal with insertion of a lens. Even with the new lens my vision was still cloudy. I was told to wait a couple of months to see if the vision improved. Actually my vision was worse. After that i had a test done to examine the cornea. The result was a clouding at the back of the cornea. My next operation was a partial removal of the cornea, and inserting a doner piece of cornea. The result was a great improvement in vision. However, this vision began to deteriorate. Having a discussion with my doctor, we decided not to have another corneal partial replacement. All these procedures have made my left eye very dry.
Hey doc, could you please comment here or in future videos what temperature range "melts" the blepharitis fat build-up? I'm asking not only so I can use the proper temperature with a microwaved moist washcloth, but I'm also curious if my 145-degree sauna can do the job... THANKS!
That's a really interesting question. I've wondered the same about hot Sun on the face. Apparently 40-45celcius is the ideal temperature range for warm compresses, so your sauna theoretically should do the job..
Really good question! Publications show the temperature of the meibum melts at various ranges (the more inflamed the higher the temperature required). 40-44 degrees Celcius is often quoted as the ideal temperature for the glands but 45 degrees on the skin can potentially burn the skin. I have never seen a study on using a sauna but myself and several other doctors believe it would help. I wish I had a sauna so I could run a study on that lol.
Hey doc. So this year i found out I had Kerataconus and i was set up with hard contacts. Well i told him that 3 doctors already have told me that i have the WORST allergies they’ve ever seen. After about 3 months of trying to keep my contacts from gunking up and trying not to rub my eyelids off, he agreed. So i am now starting immunotherapy for my allergies and have had 2 sets of shot. So i need help with eye drops or anything at this point, to help. A few hours after my shots my eyes become so dry that they’re stocky with protein and it feels like i have the California wild fires in my eues. My lashes and lida swell and turn red. Any help would be appreciated.
After Cataract surgery, How long do I have to wear the UV glasses? How long before I can take a normal shower and get the eyes wet, and lastly, Why do I have to wear this plastic protection while sleeping and for how long?
Another question. Is there a reason why plain old soap and water on your eyelashes isn’t sufficient to clean the oil glands near eyelashes. The special eye wipes are expensive, are they really necessary to clean eyes?
Special wipes are not necessary. Many ophthalmologists advise cleaning with a very dilute solution of baby shampoo and water. The mechanical / abrasive action of rubbing with the cloth is just as important as the cleaning solution used.
I've had allergic reaction to eye meds, even preservative free eye drops. Have had five surgeries for retinal detachment which probably contributed to worsening this allergy. Doctor even suspected allergy to prednisolone drops! Wish I knew non med alternatives. Get some relief with just washing my eyes out during face washing and showers. And trying maqui berry supplements.
“Tightlining” with eyeliner can cause dry eye. A lot of women use an eyeliner along the waterline and also smudge it between their eyelashes to make their eyes look more intense. I don’t think it’s a problem if you do it every now and then, but some women do it daily.
Thanks for a fantastic video chock full of information and resources. On the subject of creating an inflammatory response in the body, alcohol is not the only offender. Sugar is probably the worst, which alcohol contains, but also wheat products, including...pizza! Staying away from refined carbohydrates is always a good idea. That includes pasta, bread, alcohol, sugar. So, your puffy eyes could be caused not by just the beer but the pizza. There are other reasons why typical bread products are to be avoided, especially wheat.
Hi Dr. Allen! I have dry eyes. It's been 3 months that I use eyedrop but I still can't watch tv or can't read my books, or study etc. And I also have blepharitis and my doctor also gave me a shampoo to wash my lashes. ( i use it twice a day and it's been 3 months again) I feel soo depressed about it. Cause it's so annoying to live in such condition. Do you think I should get Omega 3 or something?
I never had issues but this summer has been so hot and dry with high allergy levels that both of my eyes were giving me problems. One eye has gotten better but the other is still not right.

Thanks, your videos are so helpful. I’ve been on just about every prescription eye drops, not working my Doctor mentioned about a blood procedure, not sure, not sure about this?

Can someone explain, I have dry eye and been to many specialist and they all say use eye drops and do warm compresse, but it seems like my eye gets worse and has more redness when using any eye drops or doing warm compresses
I love your thorough videos and down to earth approach!! Sometimes we have to be our own detectives. Had cataract surgery in February and have blepharitis 2+ years. Opthalmologist insisted on lube drop QID. The itching etc. was driving me mad. I did some research and it turns out I am extremely sensitive to povidone iodine, which is the primary ingredient in Ivizia!! Done with THAT!!!
Bit late replying but best thing l have found is Thealoz Duo eyedrops(preservative free) bit expensive but last for 6 months so there is no waste. I just use them twice a day. I had terribly red sore eyes for ages and tried various things but these were the only drops that worked, as soon as I stop using them my eyes become red and sore again...really can't recommend them enough...
NAC drops are marketed that they can help reduce or reverse cataracts but there is limited evidence if they work or not. Some of my favorite eye drops include, Ivizia, Refresh Mega 3, Systane Complete PF, Optase MGD. All of these can usually be found at any pharmacy in the US.
I just went to my doctor today because of dry eyes, and he told me of a procedure( i don't remember the name), a thing that was inserted in the eye to keep tears in the eye. He said no invasive, no anesthesia. Does anyone know about this? Thanks!
Such an amazingly helpful video for my main issue - dry eyes. Appreciate these tips you have provided so much. Also as I age, I have found it more difficult to wear my gas permeable contact lenses for an extended period. I learn more from you than any other professional in your field.
I have had both cataracts removed, and ever since my dry eye is so much worse, I was and am still using preservatve free drops. I often get Bletharitis, and have special wipes for that but, I am so afraid to move the new lenses I rub so gently, it never clears them. Could I move or damage the lens's by rubbing the lashes?

My dry eye condition, skyrockets for five months due to SPACE HEATERS at work. Due to safety code, we cannot leave a portable heater on a thermostat setting overnight. The better oil- filled radiator heaters take way too long to get warm in the morning when we have to start using our offices immediately. My office temp upon arrival is usually 60° and I’ve seen 58 already this year. The space heaters have to run for a couple hours just to get to 65°. Lack of central heating or central air conditioning is harsh for eyes. A humidifier helps a tiny bit, but still can’t get it past about 50% …. I can only imagine how harder it must be for people who live in severely cold areas to deal with this, and you all have my sympathy!
We just had minus 24-34 degrees for weeks and had to turn off our furnace humidifier because of the extreme condensation and freezing on the windows. My poor eyes.
I've been told by my doctor recently that my contacts are suctioning over my iris causing warping of my cornea. Not sure if this has anything to do with dry eye or irritation but besides going to see my contacts doctor separately from my cornea doctor, I'm not sure what my options would be. I've also has multiple visits for fittings and new lenses due to my keratoconus beyond what my 2 insurances could offer and I either have to wait until next year for a new lens or come out of pocket
Your Cornea Doctor is the best person to advise you. Always put your Corneas before any contact lens. I don't have your medical condition, but I've had a Cornea transplant and I need a Cornea Transplant in my other eye. Which isn't going to happen because of other issues.

I have found it very beneficial to occasionally use a facial steamer. It cleanses the eye, and restores moisture.
Good idea!
I had eyelash mites that migrated to my cornea and were eating it. I had no symptoms so was lucky to go to the eye doctor who detected it. She gave me an expensive tea tree oil foaming soap. After using it I started to make my own foaming soap with a tea tree oil liquid soap.
Yikes, sounds awful
Thanks for doing this
Do you get any natural tears while crying or cutting onion?
@@medhikasingh6327 yes, I do. how about that?
What about eye make up, especially mascara and dark kohl pencils to outline the eyes? If you remove it before bed, and cleanse your eyelashes, is that enough?
What a useful vlog.. I am in England and have seen consultants who have not given me as mum info as this. Thank you so much.
Best tips I've received in the 20 years I've had dry eye, thank you.
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the info on the preservative
Does retinol serum causes destroying the glands if we put it under eyelids and above? Thanks
Yes. Not to the extent that isotretinoin or Accutane does but in my experience tretinoin and retinol all damage and shrink the Meibomian gland
My dry eyes got so much worse, after having cataracts removed, worse thing I ever did.
This was a fantastic question!
Hello, thank your for this video. What (regular) eye masks would your recommend for sleeping?
After Cataract surgery, How long do I have to wear the UV glasses? How long before I can take a normal shower and get the eyes wet, and lastly, Why do I have to wear this plastic protection while sleeping and for how long?
Its funny but some clinics suggest eye pads, some dont, mine didn't
1- blink when you are focusing on reading
2- clean the fat in eyelid using tissue with water
So when using eyelid wipes, you’re not supposed to clean the white lining of the eyelid? Just the outside skin and eyelashes?
Thanks for a fantastic video chock full of information and resources. On the subject of creating an inflammatory response in the body, alcohol is not the only offender. Sugar is probably the worst, which alcohol contains, but also wheat products, including...pizza! Staying away from refined carbohydrates is always a good idea. That includes pasta, bread, alcohol, sugar. So, your puffy eyes could be caused not by just the beer but the pizza. There are other reasons why typical bread products are to be avoided, especially wheat.
Guilty of many of these but glad to see stuff my eye doctor gave me this week on your websites.
Hi Dr.
Yes 👍
I never had issues but this summer has been so hot and dry with high allergy levels that both of my eyes were giving me problems. One eye has gotten better but the other is still not right.
Hey doc! I know you have dry eyes as well, what is your TBUT and what’s the lowest it’s ever been?
mine is 4 sec
Hi Doc! My doctor prescribed me Systane Complete eye drop for dry eyes but after using that for 3-4 months I was experiencing blurry vision in one of my eyes and I immediately stopped it. 😢
Were they preservative-free?
@@jeang3258 i don't have any idea...now i use Refresh tears. Its good.
Thank you! Very helpful.
Can i wash my eyes with water? And what kind ?
I wouldn't I got some special wipes .
I cant find the SleepTite eyelid tape anywhere. Or any other brand.
Does anyone have any information on that? Thank you
Running a humidifier at low level overnight has helped.
Great to hear that!!
Thank you for your great information all the time.
Thank you for very good advice. Very helpful to me.
His eyes are so blue. Very beautiful!

Hi doctor I injured my eye, from a 2 years ago now I feel sand in it and its size is also decreasing, what could be the cause and what is the treatment.Hope to get an reply
Thanks, your videos are so helpful. I’ve been on just about every prescription eye drops, not working my Doctor mentioned about a blood procedure, not sure, not sure about this?
Serum eye drops or platelet rich plasma are 2 options derived from someone's blood which have been shown to be beneficial for people with severe dry eye.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you for your reply, I hope it doesn’t come to this🙏

Going to check out the website! Thanks for all the tips and recommendations Dr. Allen!
Can someone explain, I have dry eye and been to many specialist and they all say use eye drops and do warm compresse, but it seems like my eye gets worse and has more redness when using any eye drops or doing warm compresses
Doctor i'm a 19 years old girl... Can i take a nap for 1 to 2 hours with Bausch+ lomb contact lenses... Please reply..

Hello, are there any effective eye drops which will remove my red eyes but don't have preservatives?
Bit late replying but best thing l have found is Thealoz Duo eyedrops(preservative free) bit expensive but last for 6 months so there is no waste. I just use them twice a day. I had terribly red sore eyes for ages and tried various things but these were the only drops that worked, as soon as I stop using them my eyes become red and sore again...really can't recommend them enough...
I have kidney issues where now I'm supposed to drink much more water. I've noticed some improvement in dry eyes.
Hi, what are you thoughts on nero tears for dry eyes?
What are NAC DROPS used for? Can you suggest any lubricant or gel for eyes
@DoctorEyeHealth hmm. Thank u but I guess won't be available in India. Just heard about Nac drops. Will it harm upon usage please reply
I just went to my doctor today because of dry eyes, and he told me of a procedure( i don't remember the name), a thing that was inserted in the eye to keep tears in the eye. He said no invasive, no anesthesia.
Does anyone know about this?
Thanks!
They are called punctal plugs. I have them for evaporative dry eye but they only slightly help. Good luck

“Reach for the first eye drops you see on the shelf” is more likely “Reach for eye drops that are the most economical”!! Definately been guilty of that!!💕
Is there a “best choice” of active ingredients that you recommend from an eye drs point of view or experience. I need to know what to look for. I really appreciate all your tips and education and time spent helping us.

Is Acrylarm safe to use for dry eye? Thanks
Thank you so much for all of the videos that you share! They are so helpful.
I have not seen any on blocked tear ducts or oil glands and wondered if you have made any on those topics
I am most likely going to have to have surgery to have a stent placed and am trying to avoid it. I have had a swollen ulcer at the inner right eye on and off for a year and have seen multiple doctors (7) with no relief. Have you dealt with this in your practice?
Thank you again for all you do,! Wish you were closer because I would def make an appointment with you
I’m curious Have you found any good peer review studies of the connection between dry eyes + hormones for women you could recommend as I’m currently working with patients with that

I hope you answer my question I have a lot of mucus in my eyes my eyes are very dry. Is there a drop that can reduce the mucus without drying my eyes out even more
Could you do a video what happens when you get eyelash serum in the eyes, 4 months ago I stopped using lash serum and I had a infection or reaction were I almost think I had blepharitis with my eyelids being inflamed and red and lost lashes but been 4 months and I have dry eyes and wondering if I still have swelling behind my eyes, I’ve been to 4 doctors already and no one said what it was just prescribed doxycycline but I can’t take it, I get sick from that.
Also does using face oil for under eyes affect eye vision?
Do you have any videos on Ptygerium? I’ve had dry eyes for a very long time and now my eye doctor told me I also have Ptygerium, but surgery for that causes dry eyes. What can be done for Ptygerium without surgery?

Hi, I first saw this channel as I was looking for the best smartphone display for my eyes and came across you Dr. Perhaps this information was on one of your videos or maybe someone asked, but I'm going to bring it up again. I'm interested in your opinion on such methods as Bates suggested, or on physical exercises for the eyes in general? I apologize in advance for the grammar, as I am using a translator.
Can you please order and test eiyan lenses? They have great reviews online but I'd like your opinion.
My son is having blepharitis n underwent y v plasty but it didn’t helped. No tears

I have dry eyes I am told by an ophthalmologist but my eyes water all of the time. I can hardly see properly as it feels like I am looking through a bucket of water. I was recommended to use dry eye drops by Specsavers. I have had my tear ducts tested and they are clear. HELP HELP!!!!!!
Hi Doc, since a year now i have bad pain on my right eye specifically upper part of the eye and behind the upper eyelid. Been to many doctors and have used steroids and antihistamines but no relief. I have a desk job with a power of -1.5 in both and cyl of -0.5 in both as well. Constant feeling of grittiness and dryness as well. Used multiple eyedrops too. Some docs said its sinus but I cant really say. If you could advise me. Thank you
Ps: the steroid was Fml eyedrops and olapatidine. It helped for a month but wasn’t recommended to use it more than a month
Hey dr is there an massager you would recommend for migraines and eye strain relief? I was looking at the renpho and was wondering if you had any recommendations.
I think Renpho is good also for migraines but there is a heated/vibrating mask I use called Eyemos that is great also.
