It was an absolute pleasure to watch two of the greatest big men the NBA has ever and will ever see wage war, in this video! Patrick Ewing was a very athletic neophyte (He's my favorite player of all-time), but clearly, a master was at work, here. Moses Malone was simply dominant (as always). Patrick Ewing held his own, though, undoubtedly. Those Sixers teams were STACKED with talent. Ewing definitely changed the culture in NY. Great to see him as a rookie, and great to see Moses Malone giving him everything he could handle & more. You can tell Moses is putting on a master class, with the way he got to the free throw line, with ease. Great game. Great upload. Thanks for sharing and RIP Moses. 2 Legends, for sure. It's hard to say a 3 TIME MVP is underrated, but Moses is undoubtedly overlooked when talking about the greatest players to ever lace em up. He's relentless!
Mark Deez - definitely Moses was underrated. Actually, perhaps his greatest supporter was Hakeem who credits Moses Malone for teaching hin the game both in Houston during his college years as well as the NBA. He said there would be no Hakeem the Dream without Moses Malone.
I think one of things that helped make Hakeem so good was he had a long body and short legs. Hakeem had the length of a near 7 footer but could move so quick do to his fast twitch muscles and shorter legs. Ewing was very long legged with a much higher center of gravity.
Ewing did some good things in his first ever pro game, but for the most part school was in session. Old man Moses dominating boards and relentless with the put backs.
What a way to get your first NBA basket by Ewing, with that monster putback at 0:20. And what a test individually to go againts moses Malone in your NBA debut. Great upload, thanks!
With nothing but love to one of my favorite bigs Tim Duncan: the original "Big Fundamental" was Moses Malone. Absolutely, positively, no flash - tough as nails, athletic, great court vision, made his free throws, great post moves, rebounding and block champion and had to play in the "in between" era against young bigs like Patrick as well as older cats like Kareem. Guy was no joke.
@Greg A Willis Reed also had shot knees in his career, and I think he was a little bit better than Ewing IMO He was one of the best mid-range shooting big men ever, and could also beast his opponent down-low when needed.
Ewing was 23 years old. He better be explosive and quick

Willis Reed is the very first player to ever win all 3 MVPs in a single season, and took his team to the promise on more than one occasion compared to Ewing. To say Wilt was being carried during his 1967 MVP season when he finally dethroned Russell is asinine, and more to the game besides scoring the ball. What you can't seem to grasp that Russell had the better supporting cast at least half the time when comparing Wilt's teammates as a whole when he was the focal point on offense, and somehow to manage to lose to Russell and co. and grand total of 9 points combined during all their meetings in the postseason. The Knicks were more loaded than the Lakers in the early 70s with an entire All-Star starting 5 on the court, while guys like West and Baylor were on the tail end of their careers. A prime Wilt outplays any other great big man on both ends of the floor, and it's not even close. Besides, I said is arguably better than Ewing, not Russell.
Moses was a MONSTER the second he stepped on the court as a pro out of HIGH SCHOOL. To see him go to work brought a tear to my eye....when the C was a battle....Young Ewing was up for the task...but the Master Moses Malone just totally schooled him as he did EVERY Big man he EVER faced. Can someone tell me why the 76ers didn't stay together/stay dominant after their '83 Championship? I recall they did quite terribly in '84. I mean they had lots of talent/legends: Bobby Jones, Cheeks, Toney, the Dr., Moses, and later Barkley. Why didn't Moses stay in Phily?
G Ryen IIRC the Sixers really suffered later on due to Andrew Toney's injury problems with his foot. He was going to be the future of their franchise along with Barkley. Unfortunately that never materialized the way they wanted it to, and after suffering a crushing defeat in game 7 against the 86 Bucks they decided to blow it up and start rebuilding around Charles. They traded Moses to the Bullets that summer, Bobby Jones retired around the same time, and then Dr.J ended up retiring the year after.
Owner Fitz Dixon panicked and dumped after a couple of playoff failures, early exits. Moses was making big bucks and he didn't want to pay if they were getting bounced out early. But I still say it was a mistake. They should've done a better job of building around him. Toney getting injured was a major issue and they never replaced him.
Hm, never really thought of Daugherty as a "terror". Thought of him as a very good albeit soft center. The guy that would have been a terror was Len Bias. That guy would have been a lean mean machine.

Why there aren't any guys like Moses who get close to the paint phisically, and make easy baskets, or draw fouls (I've been amazed of the fact that he made this night 15/18 FT)? (I mean if they are very well built they can use it to their advantage). Moses would get close to the paint with the presence of the defender, as close as he could, and shoot from there, without dribling very much. I love these type of players, defenders are a bit scared to defend them because of the amount of phisical contact (but they are PRO-s have to come up against that or stay in the bench). Also when Moses is just exactly, scrupulously under the paint, for whatever reason (cathing a pass, get a rebound, whatever, etc.), say goodbye to defense because he will use his body in his advantage to make the score (perhaps he might draw a foul and miss a free throw, but, it is very, very high percentage basket play), even though he is not a 7'1''. Anyway, I only feel that Shaq does this job better than him but because he is taller (Moses is 6'10'', and Shaq is 7'1'' and also fatter). But what a human specimen is Moses!! Such a beast in the paint, knowing how to stay in shape phisically. Besides taking rebounds better than anybody, making big blocks. It's sheer, pure and neat strength. He is so well built, with enourmous and gifted back and incredible chest. And definitely Moses did know how to use his strength in his advantage! I'm amazed of Moses and so happy that he taught Hakeem and Barkley to play this game
Easy. The finalists had Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Scott, and Cooper on one team, and Bird, Parish, McHale, Ainge, and Dennis Johnson on the other. The top of the NBA was stacked in those years.

Moses was 100% on his free throws against the Knicks, and has the best mid range shot.
Ewing in the beginning had the agility of a tall forward and his jump fadeaway was spectacular.

Very True! Hakeem learned a lot from Moses. So did Barkley.
