Harriet Tubman smuggled slaves to freedom. One of the biggest civil rights heroes in the US ever. Anyone comparing themselves to her is...pretty blasphemous.
Plus she was black. And with the Beyonce tribute it seems Birdie has a penchant for doing blackface, so that makes the comparison even worse in the eyes of the general public.
But the humor comes with the suggestion that she’s soooo oblivious that she isn’t even aware of how she is being offensive, with the juxtaposition of her believing she’s being respectful or virtuous
I would add to the other comments, she was a former slave herself who escaped and kept going back, risking recapture, to help others escape. And in addition to that, "On June 2, 1863, Harriet Tubman, under the command of Union Colonel James Montgomery, became the first woman to lead a major military operation in the United States when she and 150 African American Union soldiers rescued more than 700 slaves in the Combahee Ferry Raid during the Civil War." - Her picture can genuinely be under the definitions for hero and bravery. At some point, she is going to replace Andrew Jackson (who was not a very nice person) on the US $20.

I only noticed on a rewatch that the musical clue in the invitation box is also directly telling us the structure of the film. “A fugue is a beautiful musical puzzle… layered back over itself it starts to change and turns into a … new structure.” When Helen/Andi is shot, the story also loops back onto itself and changes what we already saw to show a new and different meaning when it replays the same scenes.
As one example, it looks to us like Duke is upset over Whisky’s affair with Miles, then we learn he is actually angry because the seduction he planned is not successful. And so on… I enjoyed the technique.
The guy talking about the fugue is the legendary cellist Yo-yo Ma.
The people playing among us are Stephen Sondheim, legendary Broadway lyricist/composer and author of the mystery movie The Last of Sheila, Angela Landsbury, star of Mystery series Murder She Wrote, Basketball player and mystery novel author Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Natasha Lyonne who has starred in a ton of stuff.
What she did at the end mirrored Miles "disputer" talk from the beginning. She broke little things and everyone got behind her, then she broke "the system" - Liberace's piano, the Mona Lisa, the whole place. The true disrupter.
You're really easy to manipulate, aren't you?
That breaking of stuff and the whole ending of the movie was one of the most brain-dead things in not only movie history but all history in general.
Would you start 'following' someone just because they start behaving like a child and start breaking expensive and fine pieces of art for no reason? After she's been a moronic drunk, only having tantrum monologues insulting you and your friends? Not to mention after she goes full-on nuts and starts a fire, nearly killed you by blowing up the building you're in, and then burned one of the most important pieces of humankind's cultural history? After she messed up with the only piece of actual evidence against Miles, thus failing completely.
And her only plan now is to go against a billionaire in court and media with her...zero bucks while he on the other hand is a billionaire CEO and owner of a multinational conglomerate, owns his own major media, has the most insane connections, has a crazy good track record of beating people in court...based on her simply making up a lie about him and trying to pin _her_ multiple severe felonies on him? Just saying: "He did it?" despite there certainly going to be evidence any local fire department's forensic investigators will find linking her and her alone to starting the fire among other things.
The best part is people assuming it's realistic that Miles' friends and dependents would turn on him and switch to being on her side despite that making absolutely no logical sense. He can keep offering them everything they need to maintain their high status and wealth, and Helen can offer them absolutely nothing.
No, Helen is going to jail and will never recover from this financially. While Miles just got away with two murders and two attempted murders, and will not be affected at all by whatever Ms. felony teenage tantrum art destroying Taliban will try to accuse him of.
Come to think of it, I wonder if Helen will even be alive mich longer. Miles already killed her sister and got away with it, killed Duke and got away with it, and even tried to kill Helen herself and got away with it (and she would've died too if it wasn't for her magic, unrealistic bullet proof paper notebook). Now they're still on a private island with only Miles' friends who are totally dependent on him, and who aren't too bright so he could probably distract them away from her...or just do what he already did once today: kill someone in plain sight right in front of everyone and get away with it!
Helen isn't a hero, and she didn't win anything.

@@pistonburner6448 I think you are mistaking the director's intention. To speak broadly, he doesn't see disruptors as good guys, he sees them as bad guys. First they break little things, people get behind them because it's fun, it feels good. Then they break something big, important, people are shocked. Then the disruptor breaks the system, and nobody wanted that. but there Mile's is, with his crossed fingers.
Helen breaks the little glass, everyone joins in, Helen breaks Liberace's piano, everyone is shocked, Helen destroys the Mona Lisa, and NO ONE wanted that piece of cultural heritage gone. Helen gets a break from everyone for killing the system just because she's wild with grief and anger over her twin being murdered. But it's essentially an act of insanity.
And Benoit wound her up and let her go, because he morally washed his hands of the whole damn lot of them left in the house. I think he got Daryl out intentionally, it's not a mistake they're well back from the house. Because Darol is an innocent man. Benoit and Helen didn't know how big the possible explosion or fire from the solidified hydrogen would be. They couldn't know. Both of them had accepted a gamble of everyone including Helen dying or no-one dying, and the hydrogen fire being a minor thing like a momentary stove top fire.
Benoit would have watched them all burn to death with grief for Helen and a somber satisfied rage over the 'disruptors'. Even Peg isn't excluded from being a bad person. She appears nice, she thinks she's nice, but she's making her money from the most morally repugnant and socially dangerous person there apart from Miles, instead of getting out.

29:43 The reason the movie gave for having them not suspect Miles early on is shown in the scene between Helen and Blanc on their final night before going off to the island. Miles was 'supposed' to be a genius, and Benoit firmly believed that no genius would be dumb enough to kill Cassandra. So when they started off their investigation, they focused on all the other guests first. Which is why Blanc's big revealing at the end is centered around realizing Miles isn't a genius, he's a dumbass, and therefore should be the obvious suspect again.
This is why Blanc is so angry and frustrated at the end - he could have solved it much quicker if the myth of Miles' "genius" wasn't in the way.

In my head cannon, he is The Dude's and Maude Lebowski's son from The Big Lebowski, and just like his mellow father, he wilfully refuses to let an adventure movie happen to him. And of course Miles would know and collect Maude. He probably has one of her paintings.
If you liked the Knives Out movies, you'll like "The Sting", which was just added to Netflix. It won the Oscar for Best Picture and has a stacked cast.
"The Sting" is one of those movies I can just keep going back to. I know every twist and I still love it.

She was the first woman to lead an armed assault during the war. After the war, she became an activist for women's suffrage.
Watch The Sting! It's not a murder mystery, it's about con artists, but it's just as twisty-turn-y. I think you'll like it :)

The Westing Game inspired Inheritance. Its a single novel, packs a punch and you can finish it in a day.

Two I think you'd enjoy (which Glass Onion is influenced by) are The Last Of Sheila (1973), and Death On The Nile (1978) (that one featuring the famous BELGIAN detective Hercule Poirot!)
And of course, Murder on the Orient Express (1974) by Agatha Christie with the famous Hercule Poirot character.

This movie, like Knives Out, really rewards rewatching.
All the "tricks" were in fact there from the beginning. I could not believe that he had pass the glass to Duke directly, so I rewatched the movie, and he did!

Yes, all the plot holes are there to see. Nothing but unrealistic premises, plot holes and errors in logic. And gullible simpletons will marvel at this film just because the incompetent narcissist writer-director tells you it's good and he's a genius.
I bet he doesn't even realize the irony between himself and his 'character' Miles (and all these other simpleton, 2-dimensional doucheb4g characters which are just childish attempts to paint others with a broad brush of insults).

A murder mystery with the greatest surprise ending in movie history: Witness for the Prosecution (1957). All star cast.
If you're interested in checking out some classic American TV, two great murder mystery shows are Murder, She Wrote (starring Angela Lansbury, whose appearance in Glass Onion marked her final feature film appearance) and Columbo (starring Peter Falk, who you probably haven't heard of, but he's great). Both shows, and their stars, total legends.
Peter Falk also plays the grandfather who reads the story in The Princess Bride, which has been watched on the channel already. Maybe not enough for her to recognize the name and make the connection, but something she would know him from.
Also The Last of Sheila, written by the late great Stephen Sondheim (who was also playing among us)

If you want a recent murder mystery movie, I highly recommend The Pale Blue Eye (2022). It has Christian Bale as the lead detective. It's definitely a slow burn and has a dark side to it, but it's a damn good murder mystery. I watched it a few days ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Only on my second rewatch I realized that none of the "disruptors" solved a single one of the invitation riddles :D says it all. Problem is that the message, if there is one, won't actually be understood by people it is applying to.

This is unrelated to the actual movie, but when you mentioned how long it took you to realize that Claire is Agatha from WandaVision, it made me realize how many connections to the MCU there really are in this cast: Kathryn Hahn/Agatha, obviously. Dave Bautista is Drax, of course. Daniel Craig is married to Rachel Weisz, who was in Black Widow. Kate Hudson/Birdie's stepfather is Kurt Russell, who was Ego in Guardians 2 and her brother, Wyatt Russell, played John Walker in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Jessica Henwick/Peg was in Iron Fist, and Edward Norton was the MCU's original Hulk. The MCU really has just taken over Hollywood.

Similar to this movie and Clue, another gem you should try out is 1976's Murder By Death. You don't even have to do a posting for it (though that would be awesome) but I hope you check it out even if on yer own time.
If you want a good mystery/crime movie watch "KISS KISS BANG BANG" (2005), with Robert Downey Jr. & Val Kilmer. It's a super fun movie nobody ever seems to talk about but I think you would love it.

"I Still See You" is not a murder mystery per say, but there is a murder, someone murdered, and the mystery of who & why. But this is a movie I really loved.
I highly HIGHLY recommend you watch The Snowman (2017), based on a true story and is a fantastic murder mystery.
The Last of Sheila is another one that is good. It inspired a detail in Miles' original plan. Murder by Death is another one that inspired a detail. It's seen as a bit problematic these days, however.
And it was co-written by Stephen Sondheim -- who has a cameo as one of Blanc's friends.

You have for recommendations of whodunit movies, so I will recommend to you what I recommend to everyone: The Last of Sheila (1973), probably the cleverest mystery plot ever devised directly for the movies. There are several interviews with cast members of Knives Out in which they say that their aspiration in making that movie was to try to create something of a quality similar to The Last of Sheila. Their recommendation will doubtless mean much more to you than mine.
If you like clever twisty stylish mysteries, you should watch a) the two recent Poirot movies, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (2017) and DEATH ON THE NILE (2022), in that order -- not to be confused with the 1970s versions -- and b) the BBC SHERLOCK series (2010-2017; set in the present day; only fourteen episodes total).

A Knives Out Mystery (spoiler free)
The 2019 original Knives Out and the 2022 sequel Glass Onion are rewatchable films. Unlike other movies in the “whodunit” (murder) genre, the reveals enhanced rewatch experience as subtle clues became obvious.
The director (Rian Johnson) is a master of expectation subversion and misdirection, as he made a distinctly different sequel in the same universe. Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is the only returning character anchoring both movies.
The first movie was set in a stuffy New England house of a patriarch and his dysfunctional family (old money-ish).
The sequel was set on a private Greek island of a tech billionaire surrounded by his inner circle of “disrupters” (new money-ish).
The first movie is better (in my opinion), but the second is a worthy sequel - more transparent (glass), more layered (onion), and more fun (island).

Mary, I recommend Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot films based on the Agatha Christie novels, "Murder on the Orient Express" (2017) and "Death on the Nile" (2022). Apparently they're trying to start a cinematic universe of sorts with character, and maybe more of Agatha Christie's characters.
The original "Murder on the Orient Express" is surprisingly great too. I saw it a few years after the remake out of curiosity and was surprised how good and funny it was. It was great!

If you're interested in an older movie, this one is based on "The Last of Sheila" (1973), it's a more straightforward murder mystery where a bunch of people are invited onto a rich man's yacht to play a murder mystery.

If youve never watched any Agatha Christie movies those are so well put together mysteries. I fell in love with those mystery movies movies growing up. My favorite is "Evil Under the Sun" 💕🌞

I didn't love this as much as Knives Out. Like, I might rewatch this one once, now that I know the twist, but I don't see myself watching it multiple times like I have with Knives Out. This was a little too over the top, and for the first half it just felt kind of...silly. Like, my husband and I turned to each other said said, "This feels dumb." Then we got the twist, things started to fall into place, and it was satisfying in the end. I realize that the silly tone of the first half was kind of a cover in itself (trick us into thinking this wasn't going to be as smart as Knives Out)....but I still wasn't as charmed as I was by KO. The setting is too fantastical, the cameos made this feel too farcical, and we didn't even have a sympathetic main character like Marta until halfway through. So, it was fine, but not my favorite.
Funny. I watched this just yesterday. Great movie.

The original Agatha Christie movies are amazing. Glass Onion very much is a play off of the Peter Ustinov version of Hercule Poirot in Death on the Nile and Murder Under the Sun. These and the original Murder on the Orient Express are amazing.
Please watch the originals before you watch any of the Kenneth Branagh remakes! The remakes really are lacking compared to the originals.
Also, Murder by Death is fantastic. Very similar to the feeling/vibe that Clue inspires. It does require some knowledge of the stable of classic mystery writers for a lot of the jokes to land.

Janelle Monae (Cassandra/Helen Brand) is such an amazingly beautiful woman, inside and out. Just stunning. But she doesn't have just her beauty. She is intelligent and well-spoken, kind and caring, talented, and fierce. If I were straight, I'd have the biggest crush on her.
If she were a better actress, she'd be perfect. That seriously was the biggest negative for me. Craig's ridiculous accent was already too much, but then hers on top...
Mansfield Park is worth watching if you're looking for more mystery
Bodies Bodies Bodies is a fantastic whodunit you should react to. Harriet is a great film you can react to that will teach you all about Harriet Tubman both Leslie Odom Jr. and Janelle Monae from this movie are in it!

there’s a young adult trilogy of books called Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson i think you might like. the first book answers who, the 2nd how, and the third book answers why the murders happened. please read some reviews if my recommendation hasn’t convinced you. 😀
if you like Gillian Flynn u should watch Gone Girl the movie and Sharp Objects is a limited series on HBO max. also Dark Places was a rly rly good book but the movie with Charlize Theron was not great. all the books are better of course.
There WILL be a 3rd film. I recently heard a podcast where the creator said they were actually optioned for 2 and 3 once the original was an instant hit on Netflix (March 2021). Odds are we won't see it til earliest summer 2024 or Netflix may follow the same November release strategy they've employed so far (I'm thinking the latter).

TBF to Blanc solving game mystery so early, well, that was the challenge and Miles did say the game had started. So, his own fault really. What he should have done when they were talking in the onion and he ended by officially inviting him is told him could stay, but couldn't take part in the mystery as he was a detective and therefore had an unfair advantage over the others.

Please react to the Gotham tv series, it ran for 5 seasons and it's about Bruce Wayne as a child before he became Batman, the show also creates their own origin stories for Batman's enemies like the Joker, Scarecrow, Bane etc. It was a fantastic show and if you loved the Dark Knight trilogy movies you'll love this show. I didn't like that miles burned the napkin so easily
It seemed very realistic to me. It was a 10-year-old napkin. Listen carefully -- right after Lionel asks you didn't burn it -- you can hear Miles take out his lighter out. I assumed that Helen stepped forward so Miles could read the embossed name on the napkin.
Gotta love how Miles was so unoriginal and idiotic, he EVEN copied the writing on the invitation cards from Andi.. Sure, you could say thats what people write or say, but it was shown i think for a reason, on the red envelope and then on the cards.. same "Love, Andi xo" .. just like Love, Miles xo on the card that came with the box.. What a character :D

The only bad thing I see in this movie is that if you really pay attention, there is no mystery. I saw the movie with my wife, (Spoiler if you read comments before see the reaction) I realized when Miles gave Duke his cop and then I already knew who the murderer was.
I also don't know if it's true, but I understand that Edward Norton's character is based on Elon Musk.
I suspect that Miles is based on several real-life super-rich "disruptors," including, but not limited to Elon Musk. The other direct connection I can definitely see is with Steve Jobs, as there are some flashback scenes of Miles in a black turtleneck or t-shirt, which was Jobs' signature look. And while Jobs was most likely far from an idiot, he is certainly ONE of the people who defined the good guy, quasi-spiritual, world-changing genius on the surface / cutthroat, morally ambiguous asshole underneath "type." I think there's also a somewhat separate "mediocre white man" trope being mixed in and satirized here ... which may fit some people's idea of Musk, but is more broadly applicable as well -- charismatic dudes who get much further than their actual talents would suggest just by being superficially charming and exploiting connections.

There's also no murder in the first one. 😅 This one is more of a heist movie (Helen has to "steal" the envelope)

The whole time I was watching, from the "twin sister" reveal until about... until Benoit found the envelope? I kept thinking that there was no twin sister, that the envelope was just an envelope. That Cassandra made up the idea of a twin sister to get Benoit to help her, and the envelope was a red herring to cause Miles to admit he didn't create the company, with Cassandra planning on recording him admitting it, or saying it in front of Benoit so that he could testify to that.
Because, you know... a twin sister? Outlandish. Cassandra keeping the note? Outlandish. Cassandra finding the note immediately after the trial ended? Outlandish. Cassandra taking a picture of AN ENVELOPE and not a note? ... not outlandish, but weird. Cassandra not simply using the note to prove that Miles and ThE dIsRuPtOrS perjured themselves? Outlandish. And stupid. Why didn't she just use the note to prove they lied?
I don't know if my story would've made for a better movie, but would've made a lot more sense, in my opinion.
I also don't understand the point of the ending. Miles will be fine. You'd have to be staggeringly naive to think that politicians would risk losing their funding by choosing to protect citizens over helping billionaires make a profit (part of which is then funneled to said politicians in the form of bribes).
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a great mystery thriller - also starring Daniel Craig. People will say the original Swedish TV movie is better; it's not.
i had the ability to pause and read the napkin and it's all about crypto, and crypto is extremely dumb. don't invest in crypto coins or NFTs
