Joe Chan is awesome; he’s always dropping gems on this podcast. And he’s got those Tony Soprano vibes.

I agree with this commentary, the fees were more protection money , and the merchants were willing to pay .

Protection from whom? Other thug like them? Or other ethical group like mafia or other minority?

Ahh, the good ole days of Chinatown
My papa take me once a week at night, to visit the shops, buy goodies & get Chinese food. Visit Chinatown Fair. Buy comic books & art supplies. 🍚🥬🫖
I never knew about anything else.
My father never spoke of those things to me. He was trying gj shield me from bad things.. Now you guys bring up all this stuff ... Aye yah !! 🤷🏻‍♀️

People are also extorted by Kiwanis, Lions Clubs, etc. They pay the "donation", and they get a plaque or sticker which shows their support.

    Which side was more dangerous?
West Coast Chinese gangs (Wah Ching Jackson Boys, Wo Hop To) vs East Coast Chinese gangs (Ghost Shadows, Flying Dragons, Green Dragons) in the 80s n 90s.

    • @Winston_Chu

      East coast for a fact

MR CHOW I’d argue that west coast was harder in the 60s and the 70s, but the 80s and 90s NYC Chinese Gangs were absolutely unhinged.

We honestly need all the gangs to come back especially during these times for protection.

Munjai89 exactly bro. I don’t think Chinatown will mind paying for those protection fees.

Hung Ching was never a gang. They dont do drugs,do not do extortion. When one tried to walk that path, was immediately thown out of the club.Hung Ching is a martial arts club, where Hong Kong born and ABC's all get along well. Was never a gang.

there's a bunch of chinese men that speak perfect english that lived in chinatown for years with war stories. don't let the media make you think you have to a fob to be official.

Praying mantis is most deadly form of kung fu. Interesting how the styles were broken up into the clicks on the street.
