Breathtaking performance, one of the best Javert´s, very convincing in voice and acting, he´s really the old police officier who prays to God and begs for help. His huge operatic voice gleams through the darkness of the scene. Perfection!
He is unbelieveable versatile singer. He has a dark timbre,a rich and powerful voice and extraordinary notes in high and low range. He sings opera, jazz, musical and pop.He could be a brilliant Rigoletto or Scarpia aswell as a Javert or Valjean. His first solo album was a pleasure to listen. For me, he is on the same level as Anthony Warlow and that is very rare.
We saw Le Mis last night in London and went to the backdoor afterwards where we met and took pictures with Norm. He was the kindest person. Very polite and actually seemed genuinley interested in us and where we were from. An altogether great guy who also made a great performance!!
Check out the performance by Philip Quast as Javert in the "10th Anniversary Concert" in Royal Albert Hall of "Les Misérables" and his rendition of "Stars" which is outstanding.
@HunterHuiet105 I do too! But i also liked with Philip Quast the he pronounced every word. . it gave it that. . "yeah i am in charge. . and no one can mess with me." type of attitude.
This past year I had the incredible opportunity to play Jean Valjean in a production of Les Miserables. I now wanted to take the chance to cover Javert's "Stars." It would really mean a lot if you guys checked it out and posted your feedback. It is easily found by clicking on my channel and going to uploads, it is called "Stars (Les Miserables) Cover." Thanks so much! Enjoy!
Philip Quast isn't a professional singer. He has no vocal training or musical theatre training. He trained as a theatre actor, like Ian McKellan and Judi Dench. He just happens to have a naturally wonderful singing voice, so he does musical theatre along with the Shakespearian stuff. I agree with you so much on Crowe; while not my favourite Javert, he had a more pleasant voice than most of the other film actors, yet he gets the most hate for it?!?
I think Lewis sounded better in the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Concert, but if he's really going to be Javert in the movie of the musical, I really hope the hairdressers use this Broadway look. His haircut for the concert was so jarringly twenty-first century that I had trouble believing in the character.
javert shouldn't be standing this way cus he isnt questioning himself at this stage he should be confident at this stage that he is right... now i've said that woooow!!! break a leg you'll be awesome and may you fill phillip quast's shoes
Yeah I agree...slightly, although I'm more of a Quast fan myself, Crowe did an amazing job. On the softer note, I liked it in certain areas, but others not /:.. all in all I thought Crowe did awesome.
Russell gets props for trying, but there is no comparison between his singing and Norm -- compare the tone. Norm is how it is supposed to sound. Unfortunately Russell comes off as an amateur by comparison. Thats not a slam on Russell -- he *is* an amateur -- and, frankly, almost no one can sing that as well as Norm.
Good Ol Normal Lewis,, the John Davidson of the 21st century. Collect yo paper cuz. You're that white line down the middle of the road. I like the costumes though and the lights. New York is on a totally diffeRENT rating system that the rest of the world. Where do I go to audition to direct this relic. Brian Stokes Mitchell peed on this aria at the Hollywood Bowl. Personally I think that Normal Lewis would have been a very good Jean Valjean. Seriously!! That would have been truly bold of Bway.
completely agree. he's right up there. I think it's cool that he's african american. I'm not but i think it's good to see a racial variety. That's also why I love Lea Salonga. She was the first Asian Eponine. And then she did Fantine...PERFECTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much prefer Lewis but I still quite enjoy Quast's rendition. Crowe was adequate at best. Not good, but certainly not bad, better than a lot of folk I've heard at least.
I've heard people mention Quast isn't a classically trained singer, but surely he must have had some sort of vocal training or else he'd never attend rehearsals? No one is born perfect at anything, no matter how gifted they are. Yes, the Crowe hate band wagon is odd... from the same people who complained the film was "sung through" (yes like the stage musical itself, duh!) or that the singers weren't Broadway standard (if you're that much of a music snob, you shouldn't be going to the movies!)
Crowe's voice wasn't close to powerful enough for the role. Didn't hate him, but he was not right for the role. First and foremost, this version of Les Miserables is a MUSICAL, and needs to have very musically talented people in the lead roles. Jackman was weak, Crowe was worse, and Amanda Seyfried was the worst of all. Samantha Barks and Eddie Redmayne were amazing. Samantha stole the show with On My Own, easily one of the musical performances in recent history of movie musicals.
AnswerMan69 I didn't think Jackman was weak I thought he performed well, I have seen worse Causettes on stage compared to Amanda Seyfried but Crowe was downright awful
Hmmm. Hello there. I love how you countered my opinion with your belief of him being amazing... really impressive.. and just like you I am entitled to my own opinion.. So umm yeah thanks but no thanks. btw I have played this role numerous times.. I think you my friend also need your eyes and ears checked..
The three best Javerts are Crowe, Quast, and Lewis. People think Crowe can't sing, but that's incorrect! His voice was best suited for the character Javert. His "weak" voice made this song seem more believable when he sang it because it is about a man who slipped through the grasp of a dedicated inspector. I think Crowe probably was the best Javert, but Lewis and Quast are not far behind at all!
Crowe CAN'T sing. The only reason he sounds passable in the movie is the fact that he sings in a very muted fashion. Any stage Javert has to fill the theatre with his voice, Crowe has a cinema sound system doing that for him. Had he attempted to project his voice the way an actual musical performer has to, it would have likely been a disaster. You need to realize the differences of the media.
I think Crowe did a good job. I don't think saying so in any way diminishes Lewis or Quast. How could it? They're both professional opera singers. Crowe isn't.
Norm Lewis is amazing. Until you,as the commenter, are actually in a production of Les Mis, don't hate. :) you're not him or any other performer. just enjoy, or watch something else.
@watsie551 people like u really need to stop comparing other javerts to philip quast, each and every one of them has a different style of doing things. Earl Carpenter has a certain way he interprets the role, and so does Norm Lewis, by the like of things .
dramatic? more like overly dramatic it just doesn't translate well i feel like hes trying to hard.. trying to prove something perhaps? like maybe trying to outshine another CERTAIN baritone who has also shared many of the same parts as him... FAIL... p.s. I actually like Norm Lewis just not as Javert. k cool.. I had to clarify.
nope not true.. Norm Lewis voice isn't classically trained AT ALL... intonation? there is none.. please go get your ears checked. As long as Norm Lewis never touches a show such as this I'll be fine with him.
i HATE Norm Lewis in this part. He has a good voice but I feel like Javert has to be played by someone with a classically trained voice. He's like a tenor here... and there is NOTHING intimidating about a tenor.. HORRIBLE casting.
Breathtaking performance, one of the best Javert´s, very convincing in voice and acting, he´s really the old police officier who prays to God and begs for help. His huge operatic voice gleams through the darkness of the scene. Perfection!
Norm! I look up to him so much. One of the only classically trained black dudes on Broadway. My hero.
There are very few people that have voices that can take me into another world, and he is one of the few.
Definitely one of Norm's best renditions of this song. Well done man
Not enough Norm Lewis love people. Not enough! He's got such a great voice, very rich and powerful. He makes a very dramatic Javert.
Which is clearly why he is a broadway star that originates roles that later become hits.
We saw Le Mis last night in London and went to the backdoor afterwards where we met and took pictures with Norm. He was the kindest person. Very polite and actually seemed genuinley interested in us and where we were from. An altogether great guy who also made a great performance!!
awesome Javert..perfect bass-baritone
Check out the performance by Philip Quast as Javert in the "10th Anniversary Concert" in Royal Albert Hall of "Les Misérables" and his rendition of "Stars" which is outstanding.
I had the extreme privilege of seeing his Broadway revival performance as Javert in New York.... he was stunning.
to date he is one of the best Javerts I have heard, oh ya, he is hot too...
It's just ridiculous how happy this video makes me. There are not enough superlatives.
I love his voice. He is awesome. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.
Saw Norm Lewis as Javert in London in mid October. His performance was stunning.
He is AMAZING !! should have been in the movie !!!
OMG!! Best Javert!
His voice is so beautiful.
Saw his last night at London with Alfie Boe, wow what a pair, seen 8 productions of Les Mis including Quast/Wilknson, and these two were outstanding
Good luck at the O2 concert today. When the world hears you, it will know what talent sounds like.
Norm Lewis and Philip Quast are the greatest Javert's in my opinion!
AMAZING!
can't wait to hear him in the Les Miserables concert anniversary
Will always be, in my eyes, the definitive Javert, and the definitive Caiaphas
Norm's a bass as well?
@broadwaybaby243 Yeah, he has a lot of the same qualities I like in Quast's Javert. Beautiful, powerful voice.
Norm makes it look so easy!
@HunterHuiet105
I do too! But i also liked with Philip Quast the he pronounced every word. . it gave it that. . "yeah i am in charge. . and no one can mess with me." type of attitude.
Terrance Mann, how could I forget him?!
This past year I had the incredible opportunity to play Jean Valjean in a production of Les Miserables. I now wanted to take the chance to cover Javert's "Stars." Goosebumps.... nuf said.
I actually like this performance more than the 25th anniversary one.
I think American Gav was actually super cute idk why everyone is hating on him
Norm Lewis is a magnificent Javert...
@TannerAusbun
I honsetly believe that Norm did a better job of performing the role of Javert in the 25th anniversary concert.
@AddsMusical Thank you AddsMusical. Every single Javert video on youtube has a ton of people saying "Philip Quast is the best." It gets so tiresome.
javert shouldn't be standing this way cus he isnt questioning himself at this stage he should be confident at this stage that he is right... now i've said that woooow!!! break a leg you'll be awesome and may you fill phillip quast's shoes
Yeah I agree...slightly, although I'm more of a Quast fan myself, Crowe did an amazing job. On the softer note, I liked it in certain areas, but others not /:.. all in all I thought Crowe did awesome.
i think this is amazing! he is really powerful!
He is the BEST.
And scarey ! haha I've done this show 2x, about to do my third. x]
Is anyone gonna notice that besides the overcoat Javert is wearing literally the exact same thing as earlier?
I love Norm's Stars. He's so.....breathtaking! His 'Javert's Suicide' could use some work, though.
Not Quast, but if he were, I would probably die. Sounds good!
my fav javert !
hes awesome ! best javert !
Don't forget Philip Quast. He's another example of how Javert's signature song should be sung. Russell, not even close
I am warning you, Russell
I've a stronger voice by far
There are octaves in me yet
My song is not yet suUNG
@@lukehensonmusic7141 well put
Good Ol Normal Lewis,, the John Davidson of the 21st century. Collect yo paper cuz. You're that white line down the middle of the road. I like the costumes though and the lights. i actually think quast was just a bit better than lewis cause of the accent and sheer power in his voice.
Do you have the fullshow
I prefer Lewis to Quast. Lewis has more weight in his voice which I really like.
BEST JAVERT.
completely agree. he's right up there. I think it's cool that he's african american. I'm not but i think it's good to see a racial variety. That's also why I love Lea Salonga. She was the first Asian Eponine. And then she did Fantine...PERFECTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
We don't hate Russel Crowe, but when you hear Norm or Phillip Quast sing this song, Crowe seems so...well...average....
Very good, but nothing beats Quast!!
Much prefer Lewis but I still quite enjoy Quast's rendition. Crowe was adequate at best. Not good, but certainly not bad, better than a lot of folk I've heard at least.
I agree with Philip Quast 100%, but as for Norm Lewis, I personally prefer Earl Carpenter and Hadley Fraser, but to each his own, I suppose!
i agree with you completely
hmm, did he give better performance here than he did in 25th anniversary, or I'm wrong?:)
He is legend~~!!
Ummm well done.
perhaps you wanna take your nostalgia earmuffs off?
you would prefer him to sing in French?
Emm... I guess you are speaking about Crowe, not Lewis, right?
you know norm lewis???!!!
*swooooooooooon*
wait wait wait ... love Norm Lewis fantastic love his work but did the Gavroche just do a Nazi salute ....
Be passionate, direct, and resolute in every scene except the suicide. During the suicide, you should be on the verge of insanity.
I've heard people mention Quast isn't a classically trained singer, but surely he must have had some sort of vocal training or else he'd never attend rehearsals? What they couldn't have kept the old gavroche for just six more months until they found a good replacement? 😂
Norm Lewis > Phillip Quast > Russell Crowe > Life
3:29 since when is he german
The three best Javerts are Crowe, Quast, and Lewis. People think Crowe can't sing, but that's incorrect! His voice was best suited for the character Javert. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Ummm, Russel Crowe was just ok. Not consistently horrible but never rising above good.
You are a moron
Crowe CAN'T sing. The only reason he sounds passable in the movie is the fact that he sings in a very muted fashion. Any stage Javert has to fill the theatre with his voice, Crowe has a cinema sound system doing that for him. Had he attempted to project his voice the way an actual musical performer has to, it would have likely been a disaster.
You need to realize the differences of the media.
Quash was by far the best Javert. Crowe was awful, the only reason why he got the part was because of his name and how popular
See that massive pile of zero dislikes? Yeah. So do we.
I think Crowe did a good job. I don't think saying so in any way diminishes Lewis or Quast. How could it? They're both professional opera singers. Crowe isn't.
Be pissed off.
All the time.
Norm Lewis is amazing. Until you,as the commenter, are actually in a production of Les Mis, don't hate. :) you're not him or any other performer. just enjoy, or watch something else.
Norm Lewis = Phillip Quast > Bubonic Plague > Russell Crowe.
Yeah, I like this guy, but I actually prefer Quast.
I've got to say, I don't much like Earl Carpenter's Javert... Too casual. He's an amazing Phantom of the Opera though.
You are kidding, right? Crowe was not vocally ready for this role, not even close.
That is so cool! I hate you right now... just kidding!! :) But then again, how could I hate you if I don't know you
@watsie551 people like u really need to stop comparing other javerts to philip quast, each and every one of them has a different style of doing things. Earl Carpenter has a certain way he interprets the role, and so does Norm Lewis, by the like of things .

Not bad... definitely no Phillip Quast, but not bad.
God, I hate Gavroche.
I'm not the only one who was happy he died lol Whew I thought I was evil.
nope not true.. Norm Lewis voice isn't classically trained AT ALL... intonation? there is none.. please go get your ears checked. As long as Norm Lewis never touches a show such as this I'll be fine with him.
