Hollywood pretty much pushed goldsmith aside other than star trek the films he worked on were largely B and C and D grade.. Gremlins comes to mind, how could that complete with Back to the Future!
@@JR-ms8dk In the case of Wagner, one must clearly separate his music from his of course very questionable social views, and this is easily done, since there are no anti-Semitic allusions whatsoever in his librettos. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius, but his music fell far short of Wagner's in its dramaturgical and generally creative quality. There is definitely no way around Wagner (even more than Beethoven) if one wants to deal with the music of the (middle and late) 19th century. The same applies to Goldsmith and film music as an independent art form in general .
Damn, I would love to have seen the whole thing. A composer on a TV talk show is rare enough, but for it to be Maestro Goldsmith is on a whole other level. In related news, I was watching an old episode of Let's Make a Deal earlier tonight with my mom and Monty Hall made brief mention of Dimitri Tiomkin. That came out of left field too. Today has been a strange one for composers and old TV. Great upload.
No Don was great. We used to call him the ‘Lanky Yank’. My husband was running the State Film Theatre in Victoria and attended Jerry’s evening seminar. When it was finished he walked out with Jerry and Ivan Hutchison, the host. The latter he had known for years. Both were avid soundtrack collectors. What no one seems to mention is that Jerry had a warped sense of humour and both had clicked though from memory he thinks Jerry was dying for a drink. All Jerry’s anecdotes were coming out and the trio were in stitches. Jerry invited him to come back with them for drinks, but it was late, and he politely refused. To this day he still kicks himself over the stupidity. All he has to show is Jerry’s signature on the program.. But, as I reminded him, great memories and still, and getting more, music. Stay safe..😪👵
The word genius is so over used today. People are using this term to describe pop stars these days. This man, Jerry Goldsmith really Was a genius. These people are not like other people. They don't do well with simple minded conversation. John williams is the same way. They live in a world of the mind. Thank you JERRY GOLDSMITH FOR SUCH GREAT WORKS OF ART.
Wow, great find as I remember Jerry Goldsmith- already a hero of my boyhood- popping up on The Don Lane Show which had always traded on actors, and I was surprised. I do remember one good question to which the man gave a good answer. DL: How do you feel when you write a great score for a film that flops? JG: Eh, it's always a crapshoot... The man was always level-headed about the business he was in.
This was when he visited Australia to give a number of talks on film scoring. It was 1983. I went to see and hear him talk at the State Film Centre in Melbourne. He was a wonderful raconteur and it was a great night.
Amazing. 1983 and after Twilight Zone. This must have been just before he started writing for Gremlins and Supergirl-his most astounding score, which was recorded in England in late January, 1984 (and a make-up session in April).
One of the best compsoers of the 20th century and definetely the best film composer ever.

@@JR-ms8dk True enough, but I would rather call him the Richard Wagner of Score... ;)

Wow@@tripsadelica- jealous! Would've loved to hear not just his insights live but that sly sense of humour too.

It's a great find!
Jerry should have come to New Zealand.
Yeah I wish, he was probably in Australia to record a score there?
@@TB1M1 He was probably there to conduct a concert, I live in Auckland where are you from?
@@iceomistar4302 Auckland as well. JG is one of my heroes musically. Of course there are many.
@@TB1M1 Yeah he's my favourite composer next to John Williams
@@TB1M1 It is so cool, eeting probably the one other Aucklander who enjoys Jerry Goldsmith
If I may ask, how did you get ahold of this?
I just pressed record, the night it was on tv. Then not long ago, found the VHS tape.
I thought Don Lane was Australian!
No, he moved from America to Australia.
