    Love it that Goldsmith went with the times, using synthesizers and computers to help him compose and create music. One of few composers with a broad variety in style. There's something missing in much film music these days. I wish Jerry could have showed the world his genius variety a little longer.

      He actually once tried to teach John Williams to write using a computer in the 90s but Williams was too set in his ways to learn and preferred the piano

      @@iceomistar4302 anyway John Williams' musical style doesn't translate well in electronic/synth form unlike Goldsmith.

      The amazing thing was, in the film Hoosiers, he was able to evoke the1950s heartland in a film score with many electronic synthesizer elements in it.

    I love that this was filmed during the production of Poltergeist II and that we get to hear a little bit of the score during the interview.

    My god that music at 6:10. One of his most moving themes, just after he'd composed it. So many more harmonic flourishings and details on his computer version than ended up even in the final recording. I can only wonder what else he'd produced no one ever heard for films around that time, like Supergirl. I guess we'll never know. I'm sure he'd love today's technology.

    The first time I saw Breakheart Pass and listened to the introduction theme, I said that was a fantastic piece of orchestration that really set the tone for the movie, I need to watch the credits at the end. What a gifted man he was!

    These modern composers of cinema achieve a significant cultural reach through film. I can imagine that they will be revered as pioneers of the mature era of cinematic composition, before the AI composers took over.

    What's interesting to me whenever I see Goldsmith was shown working a moviola and tried to compose at the same time is that he did all that ALONE. All while trying to experiment with synths and electronic music even!
    In contrast, John Williams in that TESB bts had an assistant working the moviola and sync the timing of the music. Not saying one approach is better than the other, just an interesting observation.

    • @joblo7
      @joblo7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, Jerry Goldsmith had the same help, all film composers do. The two job position that every major composer has need of is:
      Music Editor- They break down the timings of the scene so the composer's music can match the visuals. After the score is recorded they prepare the tracks for the final mix on the mix stage.
      Orchestrator- they take the composers "sketch" and fill in the musical notes for the various instruments. It's not that the composer cant do it for themselves, it's a time management thing.
      Composers tend to use the same team as often as possible because they know how the composer thinks and how they prefer to work. On this picture, "Poltergeist 2" , the Music Editor was Kenneth Hall and the Orchestrator was Arthur Morton. They both have worked with Goldsmith for decades.
      John Williams' longtime team was, Music Editor: Kenneth Wannberg and Orchestrator: Herbert Spencer. Sometimes, composer Alexander Courage (Star Trek) would orchestrate for both Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams.

    • @jandreidrn
      @jandreidrn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joblo7 no, I'm not talking about their orchestrators or their music editors; I'm talking about both composers as they work with the moviolas. Jerry Goldsmith was always shown tinkering with a moviola ALONE, whereas John Williams was seen with an assistant (which was Kenn Wannberg) that played with one. That's it.

    • @iceomistar4302
