most kids today would not have the guts to learn to dance this way. from a group of so called amateurs the music was great. glad this still exists in the usa.
This is part of Oldtime Week at the Augusta Heritage Center. It comes during the first full week in August. It is not a spectator program but one for students of any age. They offer courses in banjo, mandolin, guitar, fiddle and dulcimer-- at different levels. Flatfoot dancing is very popular. There are other theme weeks at Augusta, such as Cajun, Swing, Blues, Guitar, Vocal,Irish, Bluegrass and Folk Arts. Do a GOOGLE search for Augusta Heritage Center for details on each week.
Oh I wished I lived there! What fun! In my younger days I was a contemporary and ballet dancer but I love all kinds of dance. Thanks to a debilitating disease I had to stop but still watch it every day in one form or another. I find I still choreograph in my head when I hear music. I watched this over and over and even moved a little in my chair. At least I can dance in my mind! There's so much joy here! 😁
I love watching this, I'm Welsh and wondered if there were standard steps that the dancers learn to start with, and them make up their own steps as they get better.
They were all great and give them much applause for getting out there and dancing. Really loved the lady in the red shirt's style though. She was one I particularly enjoyed. Looks like some good ol' fashioned fun.
Yeah, Rhiannon won that flatfoot contest dancing BAREFOOTED. Could hardly believe my eyes. Also, I played banjo in her class that performed earlier at the same pavillion. Remember us as the "belly-dancing banjo players?" She is a very talented artist-- dancer, singer, instrumentalist.
this is truly wonderfull, I had a smile on my face the whole time as I thought "this is what life is all about" everybodky looked so happy. thank you for sharing this video, and greetings from Puerto Rico.
Oh wow this brings back so many memories. My dance partner and I use to teach a Zydeco Dance Class there in the late 90's early 2000's during Creole/Cajun week. I really miss this place.
What a great video! Everyone having fun; I always say that things done in a group are the best. Cannot get enough of watching these great gatherings of people who love to dance. Really boosts my soul and my spirit. Thanks for putting this up for us to enjoy.
I witnessed the Dance Party last year at Augusta (Davis & Elkins College, WV). Rhiannon Giddens (of The Carolina Chocolate Drops) won... and the other dancers were as good as the ones you see above! Fun stuff. Thanks again, Wilmer (and thanks to About2Rain for sharing).
I'm down under but I feel like I belong there, must be my Scots Irish Ulster blood. Fantastic dancers & music, that's what I call living & age is no barrier.
Wow, this really takes me back to the times I was there on that very porch. Maybe the early to mid 1990s, in a previous life, when I was a fiddler's wife. What a gorgeous thing you have in the Augusta festival. While I don't miss that fiddler ex-husband, I do miss such moments from that time in my life.
One of my favorite places to be on planet Earth! That porch has seen some of the most talented people in the world and yet only a lucky few even knows about it. I am grateful that I am one of the lucky few that's been there. This video shows how life is supposed to be, simple & fun. Cousin Dave O--'-~
