  • In this program, we take a look at one of the lesser-known but extremely influential empires of the Bronze Age, known as the Kingdom of the Mitanni. At one time the most powerful player in the ancient Near East, the Mitanni held considerable sway over northern Syria, northern Mesopotamia, southwestern Anatolia and even areas of Canaan and Palestine. They married their daughters to Egyptian pharaohs and kept the most powerful states of the time in check. They are the Hurrian Kingdom of the Mitanni, and if you want to understand the geopolitics of the mid to late Bronze Age Near East, you should get to know them.

I wonder why you didn’t mention that when the Hurrian Kingdom became the Mittani Kingdom, the Hurrian speaking people of it became ruled by an invading (probably) elite that used a version of the Indo-European Vedic or Sanskrit language also known from India. Which in itself is a mysterious circumstance. It seems that this elite used not only Vedic or something akin to that as an official language, but also revered some of the Gods from that tradition.

Hi, and thanks for your insightful comment. Yes, that is a theory and it's backed up by evidence, such as the Indo-European names of various rulers (Artatama, Tushratta, Shaushtatar, etc). Also, the Indo-Iranian god Mithra has also been mentioned in some Hurrian texts...in one article I even read that Ahura Mazda was mentioned in a treaty. This is all extremely interesting. However, I didn't focus on that theory or the Indo-European connection for a couple of reasons; one is that the program was getting too long. I really wish I could discuss all that I want in these videos but then they'd take forever to put together. The other main reason is that despite the evidence, this theory is still quite controversial among scholars, at least that's what I gathered from my research. I didn't want to go too deep into that in a basic, overview video about the Mitanni. However, after researching it more, it may be a good topic for another future video.
Thanks though for bringing this up. I appreciate it and am honestly, absolutely thrilled that there are people like you out there who really are into this stuff. More to come soon!

Hi Cy. Sorry for the delay. One is busy with other things sometimes. Thanks for your clear answer. I always thought that there were more sources for that, like cuneiform in an Indo European language from Mittani. I suppose I was mistaken about that. Thanks a lot for the clarification!

@@Popperite Mitanni cylinder seals show many Indo-Aryan motifs such as the Brahmani/Zebu Bull, the Bhodi/Ficus religiosa/sacred fig tree, a goddess holding a mirror which was a regular practice found in many Indo-Aryn cultures, also we find images of fish which could point to the story of Manu and the flood where Brahma or Vishnu appeared as a large fish to save mankind and we have other seals from Mohenjo-Daro in Nuzi similar to Mitanni seals.
As you probably know Indian god's names appear in a peace treaty between Mitanni and Hatti, such as Mithra, Varuna, Indra and Nasatyas also, many Sanskrit words where found in a horse training manual this is not to mention that Mitanni kings had names with Sanskrit suffixes.
For some reason or another, this area and time period of northern Mesopotamia has a dark history - including the Kasittes - and one wonders if there is a deliberate effort to keep it so because of the controversial issue of Ibraham's name which is similar to Brahma thus pointing the figure that Ibraham could have been or was a descendant of and Indo-Aryan tribe/group that moved to the southern Levant for reasons such as population pressure due to wars.

    Dear Cy:
I'm always deeply impressed with your erudition and scholarship, and the deft way you present all this fragmentary and rather murky history.
I would love it if you made a video on the various competing chronologies of the Bronze Age. I know that there are different schools of thought on this topic, and I'd love to hear what you, someone I see as an expert, thinks.
I'd also love to see a video from you on just how incredibly difficult it was for scholars to painstakingly piece together a "history" of this region, given that there are really no contemporary written histories as we know them, and given the obscurity, ambiguity, and fragmentary nature of the source material.

Washukanni or Vassukanni in kurdish means: Kani= source, well. Washe= generally means tasty, beautiful, nice. Vassu in kurdish also mean Good. The name Washukanni is similar to the Kurdish word bashkani, bash meaning good and kanî meaning well or source. There are 100's kurdish tribes speaking different kurdish dialogue. One of those kurdish tribes called Metîna tribe claims to be direct descendants of Mitanni people.
Carchemish: In kurdish means: Car = is number 4, and chemish- wooden roof for the house.

Gutilerin kürtlerle en ufak alakası yoktur al oku
      Origin
Little is known of the origins, material culture or language of the Guti, as contemporary sources provide few details and no artifacts have been positively identified.[5] As the Gutian language lacks a text corpus, apart from some proper names, its similarities to other languages are impossible to verify. The names of Gutian-Sumerian kings suggest that the language was not closely related to any languages of the region, including Sumerian, Akkadian, Hurrian, Hittite and Elamite.
      W. B. Henning suggested that the different endings of the king names resembled case endings in the Tocharian languages, a branch of Indo-European known from texts found in the Tarim Basin (in the northwest of modern China) dating from the 6th to 8th centuries CE, making Gutian the earliest documented Indo-European language. He further suggested that they had subsequently migrated to the Tarim.[6] Gamkrelidze and Ivanov explored Henning's suggestion, as possibly supporting their proposal of an Indo-European Urheimat in the Near East.[7][8] However, most scholars reject the attempt to connect two groups of languages, Gutian and Tocharian, that were separated by more than two millennia.[9]
      Tocharian theory
In a posthumously-published article, W. B. Henning suggested that the different endings of the king names resembled case endings in the Tocharian languages, a branch of Indo-European known from texts found in the Tarim Basin (in the northwest of modern China) dating from the 6th to 8th centuries CE.[5] Henning also compared the name Guti with Kuči, the native name of the Tocharian city of Kucha, and with the name of the Yuezhi, pastoral nomads described in Chinese records as living to the east of the Tarim in the 2nd century BCE,[5] although the latter name is usually reconstructed with a *ŋʷ- initial in Old Chinese.[6] He also compared Tukriš, the name of neighbours of the Guti, with the name twγry found in Old Turkish manuscripts from the early 9th century CE and thought to refer to the Tocharians.[5] Gamkrelidze and Ivanov explored Henning's suggestion as possible support for their proposal of an Indo-European Urheimat in the Near East.[7][8] However, most scholars reject the attempt to compare languages separated by more than two millennia.[9]

After the spread of first Christianity and then Islam, the break with these ancient religions was pretty definite, but often some of the rituals of these older religions remained, they were just put into a new Christian or Islamic context, with their original meanings lost. I'll see if I can find a good book or chapter from a book on this to pass along to you...it's an interesting topic that I myself would also like to learn more about.

Yeah, the Hittites or Egyptians (I forget which one but I think it was the Hittites) used to specifically call the "Hurrian Kingdom of the Mitanni" though there is a lot of evidence that at least the ruling class were of Indo-European descent, mostly due to their names, perhaps the use of chariots and the names of some Indo-European gods that were included in some of their treaties. For some of the people who are trying to claim as being directly descendant from Hurrian is pretty funny, the Hurrians were a language-isolate (Hurro-Urartian, Anatolian language) which is very different from Kurdish, a Northwest Iranic language, and the Hurrians were split between the north (Hayas/Armenia) and the south (Assyria), there are no records of anything Hurrian in the Neo-Assyrian empire (911-609 BC), as they've been assimilated centuries prior, especially starting around 1270 BC.

No one is saying the Kurds speak the ancient Hurrian language, although there are many words still remaining in the Kurdish language that are Mittani, hurrian, sumerian etc. We are saying that the Hurrians were the ancestors of the present day Kurds as well as Armenians and others but primarily the Kurds. In Kurdish we have these names in different regions even. We believe the name Hurraman which is a Kurdish region in Iran and Iraq are direct descendants of the Hurrians as their language is very different to all the other Kurdish languages. Besides foreigners should not assume something that they have no clue about. It’s like if a Kurd interferes with England’s history but he has never been to England but just read some books. What? Assimilated? The Hurrians were one of the most numerous peoples of that time. Mitanni was located partly in the Armenian Highlands, and partly in Mesopotamia. In addition to Mitanni, there was also Kizzuwatna, which was located in the Armenian Highlands. According to modern science, the Hurrians were related to the Urarts and belonged to a special Hurro-Urartian family of languages. The Armenians were formed in the process of the merger of some aboriginal peoples of the Bronze Age (Hurrians, Urarts), as well as Indo-Europeans who came from the Balkans (mainly Luwians), who changed their language to Proto-Armenian for various historical reasons (during the time of the Achaemenid Empire, flies, carriers of the Proto-Armenian, were in power in the Armenian Highlands). Modern genetic research also shows this.
Trying to prove that someone is related to someone or not related to someone based on language is wrong, since the Hurrians have been known in the region since the 3rd millennium BC. I mean that the same Assyrians changed their language, they speak the Aramaic dialect, not Assyrian. And now about the Kurds. According to the official scientific version, the Kurds come from a small people of Cyrtians who inhabited the mountainous regions at the junction of Medes and Persia. Please don't mislead people, check the facts.

@@davidbagratunyan8190 The Hurrians altogether disappeared during the Neo Assyrian empire which is a fact unless you are ignorant of history, and the Assyrians established Aramaic, which is why the Egyptian Demotic, Greeks, and Jews refer to the Aramaic language as "Assyrios" or "Kitab/Ktav Ashuri", which is why the Assyrians used Aramaic to expand, Assyria was a bilingual nation, the monarchy set Akkadian and Aramaic as official languages of the Assyrian court, as well the kings, generals, people of the heartland etc.. were all fluent in Aramaic and native Aramaic speakers, the period of Old Aramaic inscriptions were also found in the Assyrian heartland, this means that the Assyrians were writing in Aramaic centuries before the Medo-Persians were writing in Old Persian cuneiform.

The initial people that created human civilisation were the UR, MU ans SU people in northern mesopotamia- south east Anatolia. The first city was not Ur in southern mesopotamia but Urfa in Southeast Anatolia where Gobekli tepe is found. The Ur, Mu and Su people would later be known as the Hurri (Ur), Mushki (Mu) and Subar (Su).These people at times would unite to create magnificent city states and empires. Su-mu-ur - Sumer is the best known however the Mari clay tablets specifically state the existence of the land of Turukkum where the inhabitants were of Hurrian stock. These same people would make up the majority of the Hittite, Mitanni,Assyrian and Urartu empires and may well be the Hyksos that ruled Egypt. In the old testament the Hurrians are known as the Horites and may be the same people that built the Indus Valley civilisation in Harappa (HUr) and Mohenjandaro.

Of course, and soon Sumer, Assyria, and Babylon will become Kurdish. Isn't it funny yourself?
Why do you constantly invent something without proof? Is it difficult to take a history book?

If you are looking for heruli. The name of our city is Heru. The people of the city are called Heruli. Heru city is located in Azarbaijan, Iran. But the Persians changed the name of our city to Khalkhal. Of course, the Persians are trying to change the names of all our cities and villages. It is said that in the past, perhaps thousands of years ago, warriors or soldiers practiced war in our city. And because of this, the name of our city is known as Heru. Fars still could not change the names of several villages in our city. The name of the village is Burgehim. And the village is Berga. And the village is Warsava. Of course, these are the names of several villages out of hundreds of villages in our city. Are these names not familiar? About two hundred years ago, the government spread the Kurds in our villages at the request of the British. Although more than ten villages now speak Kurdish. But some Kurdish-speaking families settled in all our villages. It is clear that it was to change our race. Of course, this action has also happened to the Turkish-speaking cities of Iraq. Now it is known that the Kurds in Iranian Kurdistan have Arab roots. Maybe they have a few percent of the Indian race and the yellow race. Did the English want to change our race to Arabic? What made England want to change our race. At the present time, Fars wants to change our race to Arabic. Because the Persian race is also of the Arab race. Now, in the map, the name berga has been changed to the word "flag" in Arabic or Farsi. If you look at the rb haplogroup map, the path is the same. When you and others moved to Europe you mixed with Northern European races or in Europe. And new races were born. The Indo-European race is also a lie. There is no rb in Fars, Iran, nor in India. Even the Persian language is Arabic. The Persians presented themselves as pure German. And they despised everyone. Now it is known that the Persians are of the Arabian Arabian race. If it wasn't for genetic science, Fars would still identify itself as German. Almost 30 years ago, I went to Kerman. Almost 40 people had gathered in a spring near the village. I was stoned for being a Mongol. And if one person in this crowd looked like a European, it was me. But the villagers thought they were Germans. Still, those who did not take a genetic test assume that they are German. The new German race consists of several European races. It is completely different from the German race of 3000 years ago. All races changed. There are still people who do not understand why the race of Turkey and Greece is different from 3000 thousand years ago. The Ottoman government ruled dozens of Arab countries and the people of these countries came to the center of the Ottoman government to have a better life. It is clear that the race will change. The breeds that are now in Europe are a new breed. When you and others moved to Europe you mixed with Northern European races or in Europe. And new races were born. Warriors who trained in Heru It is said that these warriors practiced war in the city of Heru from the time of Alexander the Great. There are names of some of our villages in Austria, Poland and Spain. The people of our city are called heruli. If the route of haplogroup rb is determined correctly. Western European people moved to Europe from Azerbaijan or South Caucasus 5 thousand years ago. And it seems that Heruli warriors maintained contact with Europe until 1500 years. I searched the names of some neighboring villages. One is close to the name of the capital of Poland. There is a name of a village in Germany and France or Austria which is almost close to burgehim. And the name Berga is a city in Germany. Probably in Spain too. The name of our city is Heru. The people of the city are called heruli. The name of a village is berga. We call the people of the village Bergali. And the name of the village is burgehim. We call the village people burgehimli. For the people of each village, li is added to the name of the village. In the past, we introduced ourselves in other cities of Heruli country. But in the last few decades, the Persians have changed the name of our city to Khalkhal. We are forced to introduce ourselves as Khalkhali so that our city can be recognized by others who know it by the name of Khalkhali, that is, in this Persian government that is trying to change the language and names of our cities and villages. For almost 20 years, the Persians used the word Khalkhal as the coldest city in the country. But maybe for almost 20 years, the name of our city is no longer in the weather news. It means that suddenly the cold has left our city forever.

1:20 anything belonging to modern name Kurds is a bit of a mystery!! not just this one! but all other kingdoms!! strange right? but at the same time 40 / 70 million Kurds living in that region! maybe they came from Mars?
History does not tell the truth!! either all belong to "Persia" or other nations! the only way Kurds can get their rights is if they get their own state.
The question is why everything is suddenly a mystery when we talk about Sumer, Kassite, Gotian or other powerful kingdoms in that area! Even the Median and Sassanid empires changed to Persia! Why so many historians against "Kurds" what are the benefits for others who are not our neighbors? Genetic dna proves that the Kurds are from the Zagros, so they have never been nomadic people! only 4% are Indo-European!
