Behind the Moustache: Visual Effects breakdown for "If You've Only Got a Moustache"

- I've got some new videos in the pipeline, but they're all rather involved, so I thought perhaps instead of letting this channel go dormant again so soon after finally posting something new, I'd test the waters to see if there was any interest in behind-the-scenes footage in the meantime. If you'd like to see more of this sort of thing - or if you wouldn't - let me know in the comments!
I am definitely in the group of folks who didn’t catch the effects the first several times I saw it. Really neat though!
Also yay Resolve! Love that software!
I had no idea you did anything like that! Thanks for posting.
Jesus, your talking voice is as good as your singing voice.
No... Reginald
Mr B the gentleman rhymer has let himself go!
You know, the mixture of retro-charm and high-tech wizardry is really rather pleasing. More please :)
Behind the scenes stuff is very enjoyable, and I'd be happy to see more.
you had me at "new videos in the pipeline"
Also it's positively surreal that the video starts out just reading out the description...
Also didnt expect incredible motion-tracked CG tutorials on this channel but.. it's far from unwelcome!! Brings me back to the golden age of Burger King advertisement when they had things like a website where you could upload your photo and then grow and style a moustache on it..
Truth be told, when TH-cam demanded I describe the video, I simply copied a few lines out of my subtitle file and pasted it into the description box.
@@Pikedevant Precisely something I would do.
No new videos :(
pipeline broken :(
@@frederik1179 It just needs a little fiber to get things going
... fiberoptic internet, of course. Someone hook Sir Reginald up.
I say........what a clever chap you are. Not only a talented person but one who is both able and willing to share those skills with other gentle folk.
Bravo that man!
I and of course many others, wait patiently, for that is the English way, to seeing and hearing your next masterpiece.
Kind regards.
This is growing on me, like a Moustache.
Yes little dips into behind the scenes is always welcome.
I like that kind of video if just as a little reminder of what work is behind such a video, for a detail most didn't even notice.
I teach high school history and integrating music as primary sources is one of my favorite things to do. Keep them coming, you're doing a service for the kids!
Thanks for the "behind the scenes" report. Very interesting indeed! It's amazing that such high-quality visual effects are no longer strictly the province of big-budget Hollywood movies.
I watched again right before watching this video because I couldn't recall any VFX, and I did noticed that your moustache had some nice handlebars at the end that I didn't notice that before. But I just chocked it up to not having enough sleep and not being observant. Turns out I wasn't being observant about something else 😂
This is proof that technical achievements are 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.
So that's why it's been so long. He was working on that video the whole time
Very well done! I'd love to see more of these in general, if only so we can see your work in progress while waiting for full projects!
This was quite remarkable in its sophistication, well done old chap, well done.
I wasn't sure what to expect rom this, but I was not disappointed. A fascinating mustache regimen, this.
I had to watch the actual video again, this time staring at the mustache all through the song. The change is really subtle, I never noticed anything on the two times I watched it before!
I've never stopped hoping we would get more from the talent that came up with "Shibboleth" and "Just Glue Some Gears On It!" Glad to know you're still being creative!
New videos in the pipeline?
Only waited 6+ years to hear! Beyond excited! I am incredibly interested!
Only just now saw the mustache video after this, I'm beyond looking forward to your technical and lyrical skills from now on!
This is great! I've now re-watched some older videos and noticed all sorts of digital sleight-of-hand that had previously escaped me.
Well done Sir Reginald...please continue your clever work
This was fascinating. A little selfish of me to want more as I'm getting into game development and would love to know how Blender etc works, but yes, more please. Love it!
Cheers! While I'm by no means a Blender expert, there are many excellent tutorial sites and TH-cam channels, such as CG Cookie, Andrew Price (Blender Guru), and Ian Hubert (whose "lazy tutorials" and longer Patreon videos I cannot recommend highly enough).
@@Pikedevant Thank you very much! Really looking forward to the next videos. :)
Great SFX breakdown. Made the original video even more enjoyable, and it was great to start with.
This is interesting, I'm a fan of the format.
I loved the original video for the aesthetic and singing. My mind is blown with the elaborate CGI for the subtle moustache effect 🤯 amazing video
Most enlightening, Sir. ThankYou. I am looking forward to seeing and hearing more of your entertaining and excellent videos in the not too distant future.
Absolutely marvellous. Hope we see you again soon!
This was fascinating! Thank you for sharing - and I definitely vote for more!
That's awesome!
I hadn't noticed on the original, but what a clever idea. I'm looking forward to seeing what is to come now.
That 7 year break was obviously well spent.
Omg,omg, omg, omg!!!! You have returned!!! You were the first Steampunk artist i discovered when i got into Steampunk!!!
HOLY SHIT YOU'RE ALIVE!!!!!!
First of all I want to say that it feels so good to see you again here on TH-cam. I would not hesitate to support your creativity on Patreon or any other platform. Of course, I would be interested in behind-the-scenes footage too. Welcome back, Sir!
Well done sir. To be honest, in the excitement of a new video being posted here I hadn't even noticed the effect.
Keep 'm coming pls 👍
Very nice, fascinating how much CGI is possible for a single person with the right tools
Incredible! I'd love to see more from you, am a big fan of the older songs to this day. Wishing you the best in this world.
Welcome back, Sir Reginald ! Very very happy to see you again !
Please make more videos like this, it's fun to see how you make special effects like this
Now that was informative! Also, please, oh please bring on more videos!
Vary good to see you active and about, sir. Behind the sense is intriguing.
That’s a lot of work. Keep it up my good sir. It is good to see you posting again after a while.
Glad to hear you're making new content. And always interested to see a good behind the scenes. I failed to notice your growing mustache, but it was neat to go back and rewatch it.
I will never object to more content from you. Can't wait for more.
Wow. Seriously impressed. That was some amazing technical content. Thank you sir!
This makes me appreciate the videos all the more!
absolutely more behind the scenes stuff please and thank you!
I hope you make a full return to TH-cam. Your channel is from the golden age of TH-cam when it was just talented individuals putting out their own home projects. I know the algorithm can result in discouraging view counts but I promise if you stick with it you’ll find there’s plenty of people like me who want to see more creators like you.
I knew something was off, but couldn't quite put my finger on it, my mind kept going to the color of the moustache instead of the length.
This man is a legend. Thank you for coming back!
Keep this content going, probably others could benefit from you sharing your experience
I've always wondered how this kind of tracking technology works. Thanks a lot, that was interesting.
I saw the second video in the list and realized the moustache is something to pay attention to. It was very slow so I did question myself a few times that is it actually growing or not. Great work!
That is very informitive and interesting my good chap!
I randomly recalled "Just Glue Some Gears On It" today, for the first time in a few years. It is a very pleasant coincidence to find you have recently returned to TH-cam!
Had to watch it again, well played sir.
I've been replaying '...glue some gears on it' over and over all these years, I hadn't noticed the new content!
Oh yes I'm interested, especially Blender. Just seeing how much work you put in a video makes me appreciate it more.
Oh wow, that is incredibly well done!
I love this, you did a fantastic job making that moustache!
I love your videos. I hope you post again soon !
WOW, i thought Reginald left music, i love this kind of stuff by the way (could also be the fact that i love your music so much that i love anything related to you). I can't wait to see more stuff for you!!!
I'd love to see more of anything form you!
So glad to hear from you again!!
After seeing this amazing work, I can only wonder what are the videos in the pipeline, and how much involved is "rather involved"? I am expecting nothing less than a full-grade Hollywood-level CGI effects on top of your top-notch excellent performance! Thank you for sharing your excellent content!
Dude this is to much! you are so extraordinar. Thank you and more please.
That's so interesting. Would love to see more!
I'd love to see more of your VFX breakdowns!
I had to totally watch the video again to see if you were pulling my leg. Good job Reginald old boy
Only just seen this, and YES, please make more videos and more 'behind the scenes' videos.
This is exceptional work!
holy honker I didn't know you were an excellence vfx artists too
Well done - great explanation!
Totally!
FX and blender junkie admiring your skill
My god I had thought you had given up good to see you again
My god man
You sir get not only my "cudos"but also my support in your latest endeavors,
I'm so glad you're back! ^w^
loved the channel back in the day! glad to see a recent video from it!
What is all this infernal blatherskite about markers and clockwork computation? Of _course_ your biddy-brush grows visibly throughout - how could it not? Sir Reginald, British manliness never requires explanation!
Mr Reginald, quite amazing skills
Amazing, I was compeltely taken by it; so much so that I thought THIS video was an April's fools thingy.
Found your channel through this video, great stuff!
I definitely would like to see more content !
It is quite the pleasure to hear your regular speaking voice at last, good sir. An audiobook or short story read by you would be quite the soothing experience.
As someone who is barely starting to learn Blender myself (though in my case with the intention of making 3D model assets for video games, most notably Train Simulator 20xx), my mind was absolutely blown by your demonstration of this program's amazing capabilities, doubly so by how easy you made the whole process sound. I knew a bit that the newest versions of Blender had video editing capability, but had also heard that they were suboptimal when compared to competitors like Adobe Premier, so had not bothered looking into it much myself. But if it truly is this powerful a tool, it may behoove me to look deeper.
I dearly look forward to your future projects. You've always been one of my favorite steampunk musicians and I have dearly missed seeing new content from you for these past several years; honestly, I thought you had retired from the craft entirely, perhaps even been lost to this latest deathly plague, and that what we had was all we would ever see of you. I cannot tell you my joy at being proven wrong.
Many thanks! Blender does have a rudimentary non-linear video editing capability, but you're right, that facet of it can't compete with many of the other NLEs out there. (Heretofore I'd been using kdenlive for editing my clips together, but starting with "If You've Only Got a Moustache" I've made the switch to DaVinci Resolve, and I highly recommend it. The free version doesn't quite have all the bells and whistles of the paid version, but it's extremely capable and a joy to use.)
First of all, it's great to hear from you again, even if I'm a bit late to be saying this. Second, I'd love to see how you make other videos in the future. Looking forward to seeing the next one, I hope it's another chap-hop number!
It's amazing what visual illusions one can create these days!
Anyway, just stopping by, as another chap hop artist new to the scene, I thought I would say hello!
Yours sincerely,
Baron Fortitude
I never noticed the mustache was growing over the whole video. Now when I go back and watch it, I can't believe I missed that! Well played, Reginald!
I have to ask, what made you decide to make videos again? Curiosity? Nostalgia? Something else? Either way, I'm glad to see you back.
Thanks! The biggest factor was getting a new job that didn't sap all of my creative energies.
Please bring us content, as you have a great presence and look forward to see more creations.
Remarkable!
ok now i need to see the video again, because i did not only not notice the edition, i did not notice the moustache growing, i was sure that it was all the time as long as at the end
ok, i've just checked, and it actually happens, i am just amazed
The result was amazing, this kind of video motivates one to start making somethng.
Brilliant work and a great new video.
< 3< 3 Your videos got me though some dark times and so glad to see you back here. Glad to hear you got more on the way. The the behind the scenes is great!
Also, YES! Blender! I love playing with Blender.
i miss you man, glad you back making some god stuff.
Encore, more please!
Y'know, if it got us more than one vid every few years I'm pretty sure most of us would watch content composed solely of you watching paint dry. :)
Im waiting for you to come back, where are you?
Have to say, this is quite interesting, so this is how your moustache grew
To answer your question sir... Yes. Lots of interest.
Lots and lots.
Oh wow, I never noticed it. That's a great skill you have there.
That was good singing and a good mustache
