Asia: The game they are playing is street craps. I was a professional craps dealer in over 10 casinos in NV for 38 years. I also wrote a manuscript for a book on how to play craps, including a chapter on its history and the history of other dice games. Craps was way more popular and better known by most people when this video was made. So, when Abbot told Costello that 11 doesn't mean anything, he was actually cheating him because 11, rolled on the first roll of the dice for a new game, which meant Costello won. Abbot uses the term "natural winner" meaning the wager wins on the first roll of the dice wherein if 7 or 11 are rolled. If other numbers are rolled the rules change and it takes more than one roll for the wager to win or lose depending on what's rolled. The terminology Costello uses "Little Joe (slang for 4)," "let it ride (make the new bet for the amount of the original bet plus the winnings for the wager that just won)," etc.
I'm going to explain the one type of bet in craps that they are playing here. In casino craps, if a 7 or 11 are rolled on the first roll for a new game, the bet instantly wins. If a 2, 3, or 12 are rolled on the first roll the wager instantly loses. If any other number is rolled (4,5,6,8,9,10), that number becomes the point. Then the shooter continues to roll the dice, and if the shooter rolls the point before a 7 the wager wins. If the shooter rolls a 7 before the point, the wager loses. So on the first roll for a new game 7 is an instant winner. If a point has been established because the shooter rolled a 4, 5, 6, 8, or 10 on the first roll, the wager loses if a 7 is rolled. Because 7 is a winner on the first roll and a loser when a point has been established, it is very confusing to someone that doesn't know that as to why sometimes 7 is a winner (on the first roll) and 7 is a loser other times (when a point has been established on the first roll). In casino craps, in addition to this one type of wager (called the pass line), there are more than a dozen other types of wagers - each with its own rules for when the wagers win or lose. But street craps, as in this video, is usually only the one type of bet (called the pass line in a casino). If you have any questions you'd like me to answer, send me a reply to this comment and I'll answer them for you as I did with customers for 38 years.

      That is extremely complicated.

Jackass Whisky and Pinto Beans: "That is extremely complicated?" Not if you take it one step at a time. It's actually less complicated than the game of chess or even baseball, or learning "basic strategy" for playing blackjack, or how to play poker INTELLIGENTLY.
Here are the 3 steps (rules), that if you take and memorize each, one at a time, before moving on to the next, make it simple:
      1. The wager wins if a 7 or 11 is rolled on the first roll of the dice. Is that "extremely complicated?"
      2. In casino craps: The wager loses if a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled on the first roll. Is that "extremely complicated?"
      3. If any other number is rolled on the first roll, that number becomes the point and must be rolled again before a 7 to win. If a 7 is rolled before the point, the wager loses. Is that "extremely complicated?"
The 3 sets of rules (above) are all that are required to learn and memorize to understand how the wager wins or loses.
It's only "extremely complicated" if you try to learn all 3 sets of rules (above) simultaneously instead of one at a time.
A way to make it simple to remember all of the above is to reduce it down to one simple sentence: (On the first roll of the dice) You win on 7 or 11, lose on 2, 3, or 12, any other number must be repeated (rolled again) before a 7 (to win).

@@emcsquared8681 E Mcsquared: After being a full-time craps dealer for 38 years, and teaching literally at least TWENTY THOUSAND confused newcomers how to play: I really see ALL the ways it can be confusing to them.
I also discovered how to totally eliminate their confusion. The key is to force them to think and take in, understand, and retain what I just told them by asking them simple questions.
For example, I'll say, "The first roll for a new game on the pass-line is called "the come-out roll." And from that point on, I'll use the term "come-out roll" instead of "first roll" so they won't be confused when they progress to a point of learning come bets (not part of street craps) wherein the first roll for a come bet and the first roll for a pass-line bet (come-out roll) are two different things. So, back to my questions that force them to think and absorb what I just said:
Then, I'll explain, "If a 7 or 11 is rolled on the come-out roll, the pass-line wagers instantly win." Then, I'll explain, if a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled on the come-out roll, the wagers on the pass-line instantly lose." Then, before going on to the next point - any other number rolled becomes the point for the pass-line - before moving on to that I'll force them to think and absorb what I just taught them by asking, "What numbers do the pass-line instantly win on, only on the come-out roll?" And then, "What numbers does the pass line instantly lose on, only on the come-out roll?" And only when they can relatively easily answer those questions, will I move on to the next aspect.
I found with direct experience with tens of thousands of confused newcomers that forcing them to think by asking them questions at every step of the way is, by far, the quickest and most effective way to eliminate or avoid their confusion - forcing them to engage more of their mind to learn what I was teaching them.
And once they got it verbally, I'd encourage them to watch only one the pass line wager during a live game so they could see what they just explained to me verbally, in action visually, which further avoids or eliminates confusion.
Something else I don't think I previously mentioned that might not be a minor difference between casino craps and street craps is this. It may apply to your experience in street games: You are far more likely to be cheated in a street game than a casino game that is protected against cheating by multiple surveillance cameras at different angles, rules, and dealers and supervisors and gaming commissions that are trained to protect the game against cheating.
You are also far more likely to be violently robbed of your winnings in a street game - not in the street games in the army as was the setting for the Abbot and Costello skit, but in the real streets in, say, the ghetto.

This is how Dice works (at least for craps) ...
    7 or 11 instant win
    2 3 or 12 instant lose
Roll anything else the game is still in play but to win you have to match the number rolled
However if you roll a 7 3 or 12 before you match the number you first rolled that ends your turn and you loose (crap out)
And the people watching have a choice on betting if the shooter will win or loose. You can also place mini bets on like the shooter rolling specific numbers or a type of doubles with varying odd pay outs

    • @anonymous19844
      @anonymous19844 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Novaximus: See my longer comment. I was a full-time craps dealer in NV for 38 years. I wrote a manuscript on how to play craps. You said that if a point has been established the wager loses "if you roll a 7 3 or 12 before you match the number you first rolled." Actually, you only lose if a 7 is rolled. You only lose on 3 or 12 on the first roll (the "come out roll"), not after a point has been established. And "crap out" is a meaningless term because the craps numbers are 2, 3, and 12 wherein the pass line loses on the first roll, not when a 7 is rolled after a point has been established, which is called a 7-out (not "crap out" which is a term that players commonly use incorrectly which, nonetheless is still incorrect - which is why you'll never hear a craps dealer use that term).

    • @anonymous19844
      @anonymous19844 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Noximus: One more thing: In street craps and the game when it was originally invented as a street (army) game, the wager only lost on the first roll if, I think it was 2 or 3, or 2 or 12 were rolled (not all 3 numbers - 2, 3, or 12). Casinos added the 3rd losing number on the first roll to give the house a mathematical advantage the street games didn't worry about. That might mislead people to think their odds would be better in a street game. The opposite is the case because there are too many ways to cheat in a street game (shaved or weighted dice, etc.) that casinos protect against (cheating) ways of cheating the laymen know little or nothing about.

@@anonymous19844 Thanks for the info. I'm by no means an expert. Just a basic understanding of it. Sorry for any miss information. But an important lesson to learn before playing any house games is to carefully know and understand all of the rules. Spanish 21 isn't black jack :p and the casino's are good at adding on little rules to quickly rob the common people who play as a tourist like myself.

    Shooting Dice slang:
Come-out - the first roll in the game
    Crap out - rolling a 2, 3, or 12 in the come-out
    Pass - rolling a 7 or 11 in the come-out
Seven-out - rolling a seven before rolling the point value
The Point - rolling any number between 4 and 10 in the come-out
Shooter - the person who rolls the Dice
Bounce - there must be a barrier like a wall that allows the dice to bounce before stopping
Fingers - there must not be any part of the body, such as fingers, in the shooting area
Side bet - an additional bet made at the beginning of the round

sweetheart, if you roll a 7 or 11 it's a win. If you roll a one and a one or six and six it's a loss. but if you roll any other number such as a 4 then you have to roll a 4 before you roll a 7 and if you roll a 7 before you roll a 4 then you lose. But Abbott is scamming him saying he rolled a 7 because Abbott added them up. But Costello originally was allow many rolls to make 4 unless he rolled a 7 before he rolled a 4.

No, the dude is cheating and telling him wrong to win his money because he never played. It's craps, or otherwise known as Seven Eleven. Throw a 7 or 11 first roll you win, 2, 3, or 12 you lose. Any other number, then you have to continue to roll. Everything after the first roll disregards the rules for the first roll and you have to make the number you rolled, say a 5, before you roll a 7. It's one of the more fair games in a casino (besides poker, where the casino just takes a percentage of what you win off of players) if you just bet the standard bet without all the other options. Other options makes it fun though (odds of rolling 12 on the next roll, rolling a hard 4 (2 and 2 instead of 3 and 1) and all that stuff. It still favors the casino, but less so than say roulette

Lol!! Probably!! I know it has something to do with 7 and 11 but that’s about it.

No Asia Abbott is cheating him. Eleven is a winner and you do not add up the numbers. Abbott is just making up the rules to cheat him.

Asia is a landmass and doesn't have eyes to close. Your song makes no sense.

He’s lying to him. 7 or 11 you win. 4 then he rolled a 3 and won. He didn’t roll a 7. He’s cheating him
