Fishman Triple Play - MIDI Pickup - Review

  • ATTENTION: The pedal I am asking for in the end... the one that enables a standard MIDI output already exists... Fishman makes ist for the Triple Play. Link below.
Midi Pickups are tricky. This one installs easily and getting it to work for you is quick and easy. Tracking is the best you will get. it's not like playing a guitar and you will have to adjust your technique a bit. BUT, if you want to use your guitar for MIDI input to your computer, this thing is the Bees-Knees!

I got this, installed in my actual guitar (Godin Session Custom Triple Play), it's so cool! People talking about tracking latency don't have it set to ASIO. However, holy crap, the installation of all the free stuff that comes with it reaaally tested my patience haha.
Once installed though... SO COOL! As a solo recording artist, this is a huuuge writing tool!

I have a Roland GR55 controlled from the Roland internally installed GK-KIT-GT3. I permanently installed it in an Ibanez GIO gsa60. It's great but you do have the 13 pin "big assed" cable. Now if Roland went wireless, say with a small modular transmitter plugging into the 13 pin socket on the guitar and a receiver on the GR55 etc then you've pretty well cracked it, assuming it can deal with a live stage enviroment.

I've had 2 Roland guitar synth systems and this thing blows them away. I don't like using this with a computer or an iPad so to me, plugging the TP into a sound module is the way to go.

I have a Sonuus midi converter and a Roland divided pickup* with a Boss guitar synth (had GR-55 synth too), and there are just TWO rules to follow to get the best tracking:
    1. Install and set up properly (including the distance from the bridge, from the strings etc.)
    2. Always play the guitar like you would play the instrument you're emulating. In other words, if you have a cello sound, forget about fast sweep picking.
It takes a while to get use to it, and you gotta low tinkering with 'knobs', which is why a typical guitar player generaly hates guitar synths :)
Still, the nice collateral is that you need to clean up your playing to get the best out of a guitar synth - which is only a good thing!
I wonder, though, whether Fishman can be mounted up-side-down - Roland pickup can if you're using GP-10, GR-55 and VG-88, so the cable doesn't get in the way.
*It's built-in (the kit version), so no bulky thing mounted. Still needs the 13-pin cable.

Hi. How fast does this pickup track? How precise is it? I play fast thrash metal riffs and need some orchestral/tron backing to make them sound dramatic. Will this pickup track fast playing and riffs/chords? I tried MGII by Jam Origin and I got to say it's less than great and tracks awfully. I've heard people compare it to this pickup. So is this pickup as "good" JO MGII, or is it actually really precise/fast - like the EHX 9 series or better...?

The BOSS SY-300 isn't a midi controller but after watching this it's still the only choice for live use if you need synth guitar. I wish more people knew what a game changer it is and maybe it's used price would go down. I'd love to have a midi controller but it's just not perfected.

I know this is an old video but I wish there was a follow-up after more time had been spent on the unit. For example, MIDI out to a keyboard is easily done using the FC-1 foot control and many of the glitches in the reviews only required a 30-second adjustment.
I gave up on getting any kind of help from Fishman so my Triple Play has been sitting in a box for over 2 years. I'm hoping an other-than-Fishman tutorial would help!

Note that the Boss SY-1000 is a "13-pin" guitar synthesizer. However, it features a USB-port (USB-B connector). Maybe it will accept MIDI from the USB-port of the FC-1 foot controller, likely not directly from the Triple Play receiver. (The same will likely apply to the Roland GR-55.)

    • @chrislaarman7532
      @chrislaarman7532 ปีที่แล้ว

@@marcusstrymon693 Do you refer to the Jamstik Studio (a MIDI guitar) or to its lesser siblings? There are several videos on the Jamstik Studio here on TH-cam. - As I replied to a question in Italian or Spanish: a B-brand Stratocaster plus Triple Play plus the matching FC-1 pedal is cheaper than a bare Jamstik Studio. However, the latter has MIDI both wired and via Bluetooth. Which comes in handy with an iPad as a stompbox. (But don't use Bluetooth for both In and Out of your mobile device: too much latency.)

Do you recall if the native app sounds and/or synths run in the background, or must they be front and center when in operation on an iPad? Also, do you DI the iPad output signal, or would I even need an additional preamp when running to a mixer/PA?

*** Rule No.1 **** You MUST adjust your playing for any guitar synth product.
*** Rule No.2 **** You need to play accurately (you don't want unwanted extra notes due to sloppy playing)
*** Rule No.3 **** You need hit the strings with enough force to trigger/register for conversion to MIDI (I don't mean hit very hard, I mean don't hit below the set sensitivity threshold)
However, there is no issue - whatsoever - using these to play live professionally - check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_guitar_synthesizer_players for list and check out TH-cam videos.
I still have a Roland VG99 and have used it at many paying gigs.

    • @chrislaarman7532
      @chrislaarman7532 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, the guitars with a 13-pin connector don't themselves send MIDI: they merely send the analog acoustic signals separately to a matching Roland/Boss device. - A device like the Jamstik Studio could directly input to notation software, I think. And any guitar (with metal strings...) via Triple Play.

I think you're correct- but I actually like this, as it's showing us what to expect if you don't set it up (and use it) properly. What I mean is, it's showcasing the unit's limitations nicely. There are lots of other videos showing it working perfectly- and those made me wonder, "Yeah, but will it work like that FOR ME?" and this is a good example of the kind of snags to look out for.
(Face it- he just got a little too anxious to check it out, which is probably what I would have done too!)
It's "good science"- in that, just because the experiment sort of failed, we still learned what DIDN'T work, and that's always useful.

How does it work for you? does it track well?
To me it seems like a complete no brainer. Even if it has those half step flaws, i could correct them via mouse with like 4 klicks.
Compared to my absolute trash keyboard skills that is like a god sent, most times i have to rework midi via mouse completely or compose it via mouse cause I suck so hard on midi keyboard.

If You Want to play a midi instument You Should play Your guitar as a keyboard player would play the keys... mainly chords, no heavy bending, soft touch etc., the machine has to be allowed to pick up all the notes You play and convert them. If this is not up to your expectations then hire a keyboard player or give a listen to Jennifer Batten on how she uses this device.

What do you mean you can't do splits in the plugin with Cubase? I'm sure Fishman would tell you otherwise! Cubase is fully functional. Also, ALL midi controllers false trigger and sound like shit, like this video, until you adjust the sensitivity, or choose the correct pickup height spacer to compensate to your aggressive touch. They always have and always will.

Latest version of the SW for the controller is great. Bends can be setup in the config to smooth. Been using is for several months with the EW libraries (ALL 10,000 INSTRUMENTS OF THEM), AIR and UVI instruments. Tracks very well, latency is almost ZERO. So for those who have it update your controller and its stable as all hell. CLEAN TECHNIQUE AND PLAYING IS A MUST. The rest of you whiners should just shut up. :)

A slightly cheaper version of a Roland GR55 only here you get bugger all in relation to one (LOL) Please do not tell me the GR55 cannot do what this does, cause my Bro as one and trust me for the extra few bucks it leaves this thing standing in the dust. Accompanied with a Godin Guitar you will have no issue switching between guitar synth to guitar either. I think it's a good cheaper option for those who cannot afford the extra bucks, but you get a hell of a lot more with the Roland.

      They all can.
All I tried work in the same way, assigning a different channel to each string, to manage the actual note according to chords and to avoid overlaps.
You can either edit the midi file to play as a standard midi instrument or edit the midi input to make it listen to all channels, in Kontakt for example is a single click.

Triple Play and "Roland 13-pin cable" are different ways of connecting. I can't tell you (yet) which is better at tracking. I have two guitars with 13-pin connector and three bulky pedals (Roland GR-30, GR-55 and Boss SY-1000), but I want to connect to other devices, including iPad, and I'll fit a Stratocaster with Triple Play (and I'll use the matching FC-1 pedal). It will compete with my Jamstik Studio guitar that even features Bluetooth MIDI but is simpler as a guitar. - I think that a cheap-brand Strat plus Triple Play plus FC-1 is the least expensive way to equip a guitar with MIDI, cheaper than the Jamstik Studio alone.
