Eruption Number 9 Started Strong But The Situation Looks Better At Dawn

- Huge amount of lava is on it's way to the Blue Lagoon and the Power Plant. Not only is it more total volume than during the last eruption, all of it is heading to the Power Plant this time but the lava barriers around Grindavik took got a large share of the lava last time. So this is more and less what we expected and it gets harder and harder to protect the extremely valuable infrastructure around there. I'm off to Reykjavik now from where I will be doing filming to the volcano the nest days and feel free to use the Coffee button to support my missions to bring back interesting footage.
Update August 23: 10:00 AM
The second fissure the opened up at 02:00 might have prevented a major disaster since the lava fill be carried further north than before, out of harms way. This looks way better now than last night!

Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
Thanks Gylfi. I hope you have a safe drive and get the footage you want. 🤞
Will do my best :)
@@JustIcelandic you do a wonderful job Gylfi.... I have very much enjoyed your beautiful location videos too. Not just the entrancing and informative eruption uploads. You have a fascinating, wild and unpredictable country. Keep up the great work👍 and thanks again for doing what you do so well👏👏
“Get something different.” That’s why we appreciate your drone coverage so well. Thank you.
We like it when you label locations also. Praying you arrive safely.
We will appreciate any footage you can get safely sir, it is important but your safety is more important, thank you for keeping us informed!
All the best Jules 💕
Thanks Jules and welcome
Thank you for this! I always wait for your initial analysis in each new eruption.
Wishing everyone stays safe! 😊
Thank you :)

Good work Gylfi. Thank you for your efforts to communicate current event with us!

Have a safe drive south! Im drinking black coffee and working overnight. Good luck capturing night shots! Its absolutely spectacular!
Just got a new prime lens for the job yesterday :)
@@JustIcelandic superior!
Do you have any tips on finding a good spot to get images from? I have a telelens and a drone and already had a visit to Iceland planned in two weeks, so I would like to get a peek if it's still ongoing. But I do not want to risk my safety or disturb emergency services or anything.
Thanks! Sounds like you’re in for a long night. Black coffee is the perfect fuel. Night shots can be tricky but so worth it. What’s the best night scene you’ve ever captured?
I can only repeat the comments of fellow subscribers...thank you for your work in updating us all...we do appreciate it. 😊

Thank you so much!❤
Everyone - if you can please buy Gilfy as much coffee as you can afford. He works incredibly hard and it costs him a lot of money (and time) to do what he is doing. His videos and commentary are first class.
Strong coffee and safe journey to you!
Yes I need it strong tonight :)
Wow, shocked to wake up from my nap and seeing this in my YT feed! Hope y'all stay safe!
Safe travels Gylfi, I'm really looking forward to seeing this eruption through your eyes as well as what you and Shawn Willsey come up with together. 💜🌋🦄
Rest well tonight!
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!!

Thanks a ton :)
Stationed there for 2.5 yrs at KEF. Praying for the Icelandic people and their belongings to be out of harms way. Hopefully the power station and blue lagoon come out unscathed

Your footage makes it very clear what the landscape is like, very much appreciate this update. Stay safe!
My thoughts are with the Northern Lights Inn hotel, which is next to the Svartsengi geothermal plant. It’s a lovely hotel and restaurant.
The lava is around 800m from the hotel right now, the new walls should better hold....
Thanks 👍🙏🤗

i saw the eruption and it unzipped fissures pretty quick. the lava also seems thinner this time and moving fast
It's around 1km from the power plant now

Hello Gylfi !!!!! Lava seems to maybe have wrapped around the starting point in two directions from what Willsey said. Hope you are well. All excited here to hear your updates and see your always--stunning drone coverage when the skies allow - which is LOTS !

The poor chap is surviving on coffee and a car that is being killed off by the state of the Icelandic roads!
Seriously though, your footage is brilliant and I love the way you labelled previous images to give it perspective. You are amazing.
And he recently said his car needs repairs by being on the rougher roads! I think he's a national treasure and should be given an award of recognition to his contribution to Iceland.
Thank you so much for this. Your updates and spectacular photography are clearly very much appreciated by many people. Keep safe. Greetings from England.
Thank you for your update and pictures. Stay safe as you travel to get more pictures. I cannot believe how long that fissure is already.
Thanks, Gylfi, stay safe.

Thank you and stay safe. I got home two weeks ago from your beautiful country after visiting for 10 days.
Hi Deborah, that's wonderful that you were just there. I was there in June. I went with three other people and we rented a 4x4. We packed in a lot in the 7 days we were there. It was an amazing experience. We will never forget it. We even managed to drive past a part of beautiful Grindavik on our way to Blue Lagoon. We had lava steam coming up on both sides of our vehicle and thick 'fog' ahead of us, plus 'fog' waiting for us at Blue Lagoon. We also had a terrific tour of the geo thermal plant that sends hot water and electricity to Reykjavik.
Thank you so much for this report and please do stay safe! I appreciate your valuable insights to this volcano and I am praying for you and all of those in Iceland. Much Love from Laara in Canada
Be safe and rest if you get tired. You and your channel are the best!

Thank you very much! All went fine this time. I was filming in Grindavik today..more to come soon
Good afternoon Gylfi. Thanks for the update with regards to the situation of the new volcanic eruption. When I was travelling to Keflavik Airport at 4am this morning, I got to see the eruption from the road. Couldn't believe that I got to see the eruption this morning. When my plane was taxiing before take off, I could see the eruption and the large amount of smoke coming from the eruption. But my plane took off to the north before turning south. Stay safe on your travels Gylfi. I had a brilliant time in Iceland, despite the poor weather. I will definitely come back to Iceland in the future.
Same for me, it was 'awesome' to see how close the eruption was to the road so unreal. Driving from Keflavik probably had an even better view. When I took off at 8AM the eruption had decreased significantly or maybe it was the daylight dim it a bit, could see it from the plane but it was way more smoke and the lava didnt come through on pictures I took. I was first sad I couldnt choose my seat on my usual side of the plane (A seats), but now I was happy to be actualy on the right side to see the eruption. :)
@@AnnaMaria-zm8cv my plane took off heading north then it turned south after about 5-10 minutes & climbed through the clouds so we didn't get to see it.
@@johnbradshaw7525 we flew exact same route, but the eruption was visible somewhat behind the plane for the first 5 minutes before heading into the clouds. It was clear above lake Kleifervatn but you couldnt look through to previous eruptionsites. I will see my luck again tomorrow when I return back to Iceland.
Lucky you. I was in Iceland in June. We had the good luck of driving past a section of Grindavik on a detour road. It was an amazing experience to see a bit of lovely Grindavik. We had lava steam beside both sides of our car and thick fog ahead of us as we drove to Blue Lagoon. We had so much 'fog' at Blue Lagoon we could only see about one foot in front of us. Our trip to Iceland was an amazing experience.
@@sbaumgartner9848 The weather was not good while I was in Iceland. I went whale watching in Eyjafjörður & it was really rough with strong winds and horizontal rain. Then in northern Iceland there was fresh snow on the mountains. We also had warnings for strong winds for Wednesday & Thursday.
Thanks for the update Gylfi. I know you just wanted to hit the road and get down south but we really appreciate the update. We’ll keep an eye open tomorrow for the next one. Prayers to everyone there.
Thank you Gylfi for all your hard work keeping us informed. Congratulations on 100k subs. God bless you and yours
Great and clear explanations about where it is and where it is going. Looking forward to the next updates. Enjoy the coffee.
''...this is just how the way my country is...'' your laid back statment of fact is priceless...thank you Gylfi...stay safe😃🌋🌠
Thank you. Always checking in with your videos, some of the best out there. Thanks again.
Wishing you the best with this one Gylfi. Thanks for the update.
When you look at those surrounding hills, you can begin to see how high the lava can stack. If the current series of eruptions persist for long enough, all of the protective barriers will be overcome by lava. It also means that the power station, Blue Lagoon, Grindavik and the surrounding farms are at risk of being swamped by lava. The Volcano Island is growing itself.
Prayers to all
Thanks for the update
You are all strong and Im glad people got evacuated
Hopes there will be a break in these eruptions so people can have a more normal life but seems that every country is going through some challenges right now ❤
This was very unexpected to me, Ive been keeping an eye on things and she foxed me again.
Thanks for the great updates and for going the extra coffee powered mile to bring us great footage
Thankyou very much for sharing
Thank you so much and take good care of yourself, Gylfi! 🌋😊
Thank you for this update. Good luck with your trip to make photos and videos from the eruption. Stay safe. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Thanks Gylfi. Be careful on the road. Best regards from NZ.
Astonishing to look at that long fissure gushing lava fountains along its entire, though intellectually I realize that this is neither unusual for the start of these events nor particularly large on the scale of past eruptions, both during human history and especially during geologically older times. I’m glad you have better equipment now and your car is in running condition. The best of good wishes to you as you pursue your mission and to the Icelandic people whose lives are affected by this eruption.
Wishing you safe travels and a lot of success with your video of this new eruption. I’m always very happy to see a new video from you, regardless of the subject matter. I’ll check back tomorrow for a new update.
May your travel south go smoothly and you get the videos you want! May the power plant and Blue Lagoon see no damage and everyone be safe!
