Rare video of Heard Island volcano Big Ben erupting

  • Scientists on board the CSIRO research vessel Investigator have taken rare video footage of an eruption of the Big Ben volcano on remote sub-Antarctic Heard Island during an IMAS voyage to the Kerguelen Plateau.
    Big Ben, which includes the 2,745 m tall Mawson Peak, the highest mountain on Australian territory north of Antarctica, is known to have erupted at least three other times since 2000.
    But the remoteness of Heard Island and the neighbouring McDonald Islands, also an active volcano, means eruptions are rarely glimpsed by people and usually only recognised from sparse satellite images.
    RV Investigator is circling the islands on the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Plateau as part of an IMAS-led voyage to study the link between active volcanoes on the seafloor and the mobilisation of iron which enriches and supports life in the Southern Ocean.
    Voyage Chief Scientist, IMAS's Professor Mike Coffin, and PhD candidate Jodi Fox comment on the eruption.

    It's rare because it's probably never been filmed before and few people have ever seen it erupt. The lava is the black stuff on the snow in the first 23 secs. Heard Is Is so remote, so rarely visited, and so rarely clear of cloud that something like this might not be seen again for years.

    So glad it was recorded at 1080p. It made it seem like the volcano wasn't 2,000 miles away, only 1,000. Great to see that tiny puff of smoke so clearly.

    Nice catch! I was looking at google Earth satellite imagery of Heard just now and there appears to be two small volcanic cinder cones on the extreme northwestern coast area. Is that actually what I'm seeing? They don't look too old, but have some vegetation on the lower flanks and inside.

    I am confused....Heard Island is nearly 800 miles north of any Antarctic landfall. Why is the term "sub-Antarctic" used to describe the island's position? The word "sub" usually denotes under. Since the island is neither South of Antarctica nor under the same I am confused. Please explain. Thanks.

    I love research, science, and exploration videos. For several months, I drove by Mt. St. Helens and saw it doing this. You can see Mt. Baker do this fairly often. Came expecting to see an actual eruption and left with some steam. The only thing rare about this video is that I have never heard of or seen a picture of this volcano before. Very beautiful though and wish I was on the ship with you!.

      its a volcano, and a very active one at that. humans have no affect on volcanoes as its a natural occurence on earth and other planets. if anything affects volcano activity, its plate tectonics. humans can increase greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, causing more heat to be trapped from the sun, leading to the melting of the polar ice caps and other extreme weather. oh, and btw, it's climate change, not global warming

    • @rustydavis2573
      @rustydavis2573 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea that we cannot affect the environment is absurd. You guys realize that we've burned 2 massive holes in the ozone layer, right? Go ahead and deny man made climate change, but the fact is that if the earth continues to heat up like it has for the past 150 years we're completely fucked. You can either do nothing or try something. Up to you.

    • @rustydavis2573
      @rustydavis2573 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Your2k Well that's not true. It was first observed in the 70s at the earliest. It was first reported in a scientific journal in 1985. It was a huge shock to the scientific community at the time. I wouldn't mind being proven wrong, but I really doubt you could provide credible evidence to support that.
