The Green Card, originally called the Alien Registration Receipt Card, is a card possessed by non-citizen Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) in the United States. You can read about the history and color of the card here and here. The card, first introduced in 1940 as part of the Alien Registration Act of 1940 (aka the Smith Act), carries with it an interesting regulation - those having the card are required to carry it with them at all times. Here’s how the USCIS puts it:
A green card is issued to all permanent residents as proof that they are authorized to live and work in the United States. If you are a permanent resident age 18 or older, you are required to have a valid green card in your possession at all times.

Currently have a family member with a Green Card and being told exactly the opposite by Immigration while going through the citizenship process... So I guess it depends on who you talk to.

I got pulled over while riding my girlfriend’s bicycle in Komazawa-daigaku. I am Indian-Black, and I speak fluent Japanese.
Cop asks, “Is this your bike?”
I scratch my head and say, “Not quite. It belongs to my girlfriend.”
“Your girlfriend? I see...and what is her name?”
(I give the cop her name.)
    “Okay! Have a good night.”
Pretty sure he was trying to catch me lying-I said it with such precision without even thinking, either.
Don’t misinterpret what I’m saying here, either-I literally got lucky I think because I spoken clearly in Japanese. Cops here will arrest you if you’re drunk riding a bike; they’ll also fine you $500.00 if they catch you riding while wearing headphones, too.

I got arrested in Japan once when I was studying abroad. I left my college gates and immediately the cops came after me. Turns out a foreigner broke into someones house and since I am foreign it automatically meant it was me. I got held for a few hours. They searched EVERYTHING. Asked why I was here, where I was at X time, etc. Eventually they found the real guy and released me. They were totally going to pin it on me if they never found him.

I have a question about medication and carrying your prescription with you. Is it enough to have your medication in the pharmacy jar, what show is your name and what is inside? Or do I have to have the doctor write a special note to say so and so is prescribed this medication? For the people who are getting in trouble for this, are they bringing their medication in the pharmacy jar, or in a separate non-pharmacy container? I know that if I ever happen to have a prescription at the time that I'm traveling, I'll keep it in the pharmacy made container with the pharmacy label. So in Japan, do I need a special doctor's note, or do I just bring stuff in the pharmacy jar? The thing about saying you need a prescription is that the prescription is the little piece of paper you take to the pharmacy in order to receive the medicine. Just wanted a little clarification on that.

  • @TheOriginalMarimoChan

OMG thank you SO MUCH!!! I had no clue that you couldn't bring certain medications (even though prescription) into Japan! Thanks from the bottom of my heart! I was going to take my Sudafed (the one that has the stimulant) to Japan in case my allergies flared up but now it looks like I'm going to have to leave them at home as those are considered illegal and it's on the No Exceptions list. This video probably saved me from being arrested lol

Protip: Even if you have a residence card, always carry your passport as well!
I was stopped and questioned twice in a row while figuring out where to park at my local train station and getting it wrong both times. Of course there was a police station in the same lot, and they were bored, I guess. Each time they wanted to look closely at my passport, and the second time they even asked where my previous passport was (I'd told them - because they'd asked - that I'd been in the country before, but that visa wasn't in the current passport.) It took a bit of explaining in my crap Japanese that the US doesn't let you keep your old passports. Don't know if they actually understood that though, or just gave up trying because my Japanese really is that bad.

No choice we waited outside until we fall asleep (2hours) there’s a guard of the station notice us and he said please follow me (thanks to him) he open the waiting shed and let us wait there he just off the light so that no one notice were inside cause its not allowed he just concern to us being suffer by cold outside the station. Foreigners aren't allowed to be in any industry considered an "adult industry" it depends on the place and the lines are not strongly drawn. For example, if the bar you work at can also be considered an Izakaya or something like that, then they don't consider it an adult industry. To engage in any activity that isn't specified on your visa requires a permit; and they won't give that to you for night jobs. www.tokyoimmigration.jp/?p=187
(But like I said, literally no one enforces this law. I have friends who are even on temp. visas and are doing it. It's just to be careful when you get paid and taxes)

    • @richardaaron4454
      @richardaaron4454 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I learned about foreigners not being able to work in adult industries by watching a show called nihonjin no shiranai nihongo. th-cam.com/video/mgAfflqWQfA/w-d-xo.html it is mentioned in the first episode but covered thoroughly in a later episode when they find a foreigner just holding a sign and asking people to enter a bar and said it was illegal. Now these foreigners were there on student visas which only allowed them to work part time so I'm not sure about how it works with other visas but I wouldn't take any chances.

Drunk in a Station passed out at Christmas around Roppongi . The police help me into a hospital, they were very helpful!
I’ve never been stopped, asked for papers, I’m always on my bike, no issues for over 8 years. Went to the US, asked for a police officer for directions, and the officer went for his gun. He realized there was no issue, he stopped himself and gave me a warning of never asking for directions from a cop...

It's strange, as someone that lives in the US, hearing about the laws like that. I mean, from my understanding, Japan is not that dangerous anyway.
But in many places here at home, I don't even go there without concealed carrying my Glock 26 handgun. (my state has very lenient gun laws and, while most places are no danger, there are some areas I won't go unless I'm armed).
But just being allowed to carry a gun with no permit is such a normal thing here. I just carry it pretty much everywhere it's allowed. Violent attacks are very uncommon in my small rural town, but in some of the cities nearby, there are muggings, knife attacks, and other such incidents that happen a quite bit more frequently.
I can be safe in saying I wouldn't have a problem leaving my gun or knife at home when I travel to Japan though.... I would much love to be able to come back and also would love to not get arrested for having a gun at an airport. Or any weapon for that matter.

Its sounds like the yakuza are the actual good guys (they are like the union protecting regular peoples rights) and the police is more like the mafia kidnapping people for no reason other than intimidation?! What's going on? But they couldn't arrest the aum shinrikyo cult when all their neighbors where saying that they where up to something weird?!
I was once questioned by Japanese police in Tokyo when I was filming a vlog. Wow I never knew how much trouble I could have been in.

But for the tens of thousands of visitors descending on Japan. Who will be completely clueless of most of these things.
Let's hope Japan can handle it in a way that doesn't involve the international press or loss of face.
Maybe they should pass along this video to all those who plan to attend the games. You guys could be like ambassadors of the games. :b

You can actually have a rifle or shotgun in Japan for hunting. The licensing process is extensive, involving training with both written and practical examination that requires a 95% score to pass. New rifle licensing is illegal, so current owners cannot transfer them to a new person, and their estate transfers them to the police when the person dies. Handgun ownership is completely illegal.
Also, it's actually required by US law for foreign nationals and US permanent residents (ie, non-citizens) to have their residency documents on them at all times.
A 30-day supply of most prescription drugs are allowable for tourists. Some drugs, like Aderall, are illegal with or without a prescription. The Japanese US embassy site suggests you bring a copy of the prescription as well as a letter explaining the purpose and use of the drug. However, in the times I've been to Japan for tourism, nobody has ever (at customs or otherwise) asked about or searched for any drugs. I have a couple of regulatory prescriptions that I have to take on a daily basis, so they travel with me. If you have a prescription drug that you think might be sketchy (like an opioid, for example), check with the nearest embassy/consulate. It's possible to apply for and receive a certificate allowing the drug, but I've never gone through the process, so no idea how difficult it is.

Skateboarding isn’t a problem for Japanese, but skateboarding in public roads especially shopping districts is a no-no for us. Reasons because it loud and not safe in places where there’s a lot of people. We aren’t allowed to cause trouble迷惑 to anybody so yeah...If there’s a no bycicle sign then no skateboarding or roller skating etc.

I guess Japan has a similar system to certain American states. In my state It is legal to carry firearms without the need for any permits (Constitutional Carry). However alot of residents dont know this, much less visitors from other states and counties. I carry everywhere I go, which is legal. But I still get weird looks alot if anyone notices my gun or holster setup.

And the idea that you can't have prescription drugs in a modern country like Japan is ridiculous. Just check they embassy for rules.
