- Hey what's up everyone? today I'm building a diy peat moss spreader for my fall over seeding |the Moss Boss| I built this thing on a budget too only $150 that's about half the price of the ones you find on amazon! so sit back and watch me build this beast!

• leveling a BUMPY lawn ...
MATERIALS NEEDED:
2- 2'X2' pieces of plywood. ( I used 3/4") but any thickness will do
11- 3'x3/8" threaded rod
2- 1-1/8" dowel rod
1- 10' roll of 1/2"x1'"x30" wire cloth
4- 3/8"x4" hanger bolts
48- 3/8" zinc flat washers
24- 3/8" zinc lock washers
48- 3/8" zinc nuts
1 bag (100pk) zip ties
2- caster wheels
10' 1" pvc pipe
4- 1" pvc tee's
3- cans of spray paint (color of your choice)
2- 3/8" knobs (for the door, nuts and fender washers would also work.)
I also used varies scrap pieces of 1/2" plywood to make the curved door supports.

Agreement, somthing i wouldn't have thought of. Nice idea.
It would be nice if you could pull this behind a ATV or lawn/garden tractor, but that just means a change to the handel bar system.
If your over seeding a lawn mixing grass seed into the moss or compost
IE: food last years grass clipping, or composted leaves mix in grass seed and keep yard moisture up the seeds will have a better chance to germinate.
Pull behind, my yards not big, but its a lot of hills so walking equipment is a work out I dont need at my age.
It used to take me 2 to 3 hours to mow the lawn. With a lawn tractor I can get it done in an hour or less. Its still not that big but the side yard hills are from walk out basment to street leval and they are steep. You can only mow up and down the hill on a tractor I also run snow chains year round for traction.
No they do not dammage the lawn other then the tractors weight on the lawn.
Aerating the yard helps.

I really do appreciate that you built it in a way that doesn’t require many tools. Whatever the average homeowner doesn’t have could easily be substituted with similar tools or some slight modifications to the design to accommodate.

Cool build, thanks for the material list. I did find a Home Depot in Indianapolis that will rent a spreader for about $12 for the day...that way I don't even have to store it! Just a suggestion for those with limited garage space.

I like the idea. My thoughts.
* The door doesn't swing open enough, which will make it harder to load bags of peat moss or compost inside
* I would have made mine much bigger and put a lawn mower attachment handle on it
* I'm curious how long the pvc and wood will hold up.

Those are all great ideas, the door could open wider, but really hasn’t been bad at all, if you had a larger yard a mower attachment would be sweet! My yard isn’t large enough to justify it. The pvc and wood are holding up nicely. there’s always room for improvement though.👍🏻 thanks for watching and commenting.👊🏻

Awesome build, thank you so much! I have been trying to figure out how to build a trommel to sift compost and dirt without using bike rims like all the other youtube videos. A slight tweak to this design would work excellent! Also, using the caster without the wheel for the axle, brilliant!

@@brewbuilds i didnt understand how you keep the spreader closed?
So on the latching side of the door the 3/8” hanger bolts slide in to the slots on the outer pieces of the drum, and on each side there are 3/8” threaded knobs, when the door is closed you spin the knobs tight which secures the door shut. I hope that makes sense. I’m actually working on a full set of build plans for it that will be available after my next video of me using it is published.

Well, now I'm addicted. I've been looking for a similar solution, but I live in a tiny allotment of land and have been doing it by hand. Still, this is really good.

Nice!, I actually made one quite similar to yours last year. I really like the caster adaptation I might borrow that feature for mine. I used old 24inch bike tires, I removed the spokes from the rims and placed the wood cutout between the wheels. it rolls pretty nice with tires on.

Great video - this inspired me to make my own. I took some of your ideas (wheel casters, door) and incorporated them into another build video I watched by everydaydad. I didn't have 3/8's all threads laying around and I was trying to value engineer the entire project. The only thing left is deciding what size screen to use - 1" x 1/2" or 1/2" by 1/2". Comments in both videos mentioned using the 1/2 x 1/2. Any advice on that? I'm going threw some of your other videos - you have a real talent for making these, interesting stuff!!
Thanks Larry! My whole mission for building these projects is to inspire others.👍🏻 I believe I used a 1”x3/4” mesh and it worked great. I did have some viewers use 1/2”x1/2” and say it work great as well. I’d imagine the 1/2”x1/2” mesh would help filter more of the larger debris out. I was happy mitt the mesh sized I used. 👍🏻
Great project. I may have to build this as a winter project. After having used it multiple times now, would you change anything with the door, mesh size, or anything else in general?
Thank you! The only thing I’d consider modifying is making the door larger. It’s not bad how it is, but a little larger would make it a little easier to load the peat moss. The mesh size worked great, I have had a couple people say they used 1/2”x1/2” do to it being all they could find locally, and said that worked great as well.

How is this Moss boss holding up after 1 year? Plywood should react to moist I believe from the lawn/compost? Even though its painted. Even moist from season storage..?
It’s holding up great! Still works and looks like the day I built it. I pretty much only use it to roll out peat moss. it’s not something that gets used everyday so I’m sure that helps, but that was kind of my reason in building one instead of buying one.👍🏻
looks fantastic , i just cant figure out your latches .can we see the latches you used ? perhaps a name / model type . i can seem to figure how the door closes securely.

Any hints on where to find hardware cloth like that? I'm only finding 1/2" square stuff. My wife is a fan and I've been tasked to build this for her.

how does the conduit and pvc handle the pressure of a peat bail combined with terrain? and flex or does it stay rigid enough?

Nice build and looks like it'll get the job done. However, after I buy all of the tools (sander, saws, clamps and materials) it would be cheaper to buy one. To your point, I also don't want to store something you're hopefully only going to use once. Why not just rent one for a day from Home Depot or Diamond Equipment for $35 a day. Way cheaper than building or buying one on your own.
There wasn’t one in my area to rent. Buying one of equivalent size is $800. This cost me $150 to build also I enjoy building things so it was a win win for me. I feel like the tools needed to build this are in most home garages if you like making things. I understand some people would rather just buy, or rent. 👍🏻
Holy Cow!!! You'd need thousands of dollars in tools and equipment alone just to build the thing.

Making it now. How is the mesh holes? If you had to make it again would you go smaller? Or is that mesh size perfect for peat moss?
It worked awesome. The peat moss rollers online have 1/2”x3/4” holes and I used 1/2”x1” because it was the closest to those dimensions. I think smaller would maybe gather a little bit more debris, but I’m not sure if it would flow out as nice. I’m uploading the video of me using it right now so it should be ready to view tonight and that may help you decide as well.👍🏻

I Just finish wrapping the Moss Boss with 1/2 x 1/2 wire mesh openings. Hopefully it flows as well as yours. i’ll let you know how it works out as soon as I use it. The green lettering you did on it looks amazing! I just finish painting mine black. How did you do the green lettering ? Is it also paint? Or is it a sticker?

As far as the lettering my wife used her silhouette to make a sticker that I used as a stencil to spray paint the name on. I’m really curious how your 1/2”x1/2” mesh works. I think it will work just fine and probably collect a little bit more debris.

I'd like to lay down as thin a layer as possible - less than 1/4 inch - so smaller holes may be better. But I'm curious if the 1/2 holes are too small.

I just bought one I was gonna make it out of a old cheaper metal lawn roller.
Welensee is som mfg that is now selling these I went there’s had discount code paid $180. It’s nice a bit nicer then “Landzi” and $50-60. I do about 20-25 yards a season tho so I went the all metal mfg one. Another reason I went w welensee brand is offer 100% $$ back guarantee for any issues.. I can’t say as If I remember seeing landzie say that
Yeah buying one is definitely faster. I enjoy building projects just as much as using them so making one for me was part of the fun. I’ll probably only use mine once a season. And between my front and back yard I probably have 4,000sq/ft. So not all that big.
@@brewbuilds gives u a vid to make and seemed to lay the moss down quit well. Def a bit more then the landzie but that’s cause your cylinder is bigger and has more of a “Big Block “ stroke compared to “small block” def a move diy build tho for sure
It was a fun project to build for sure. It laid the peat down really well. I’ve had a few people build it and they used slightly smaller wire cloth and they said it work great. I tried to match a similar size wire cloth as the landzie.

Thank you. At the time it cost me about $150 to build and the landzie’s ranged anywhere from $250-$600 depending on the size. Mine is right in the middle as far as sizing.
So, 2-5 grand in power tools, you can build this and save 400$! Right on! Lol

good job on the build, but not everyone has the tools you have to build this. I just bought mine, comes in a week, no work, no hassle powdercoated last a lifetime.
You may have a point, either way I enjoy building projects in my shop and showing my process so people that may have a few tools, but maybe aren’t always sure how to execute a particular task get a little guidance to help them get after it . 👍🏻thanks for watching, the feedback, and commenting!

This cost me $145 the Lanzie brand of similar size was $800. 🤷🏻♂️
Cost, 250.00 plus 400.00 in labor.
Let's just be honest, if you're that talented, your hourly rate is north of $500.00/ hr. So really, you were just showing off building a $2500.00 fertilizer spreader.
😂 this is my hobby so I don’t look at it that way. 👍🏻 it’s all about having fun in my shop building something.
