I waited al summer for hummingbirds to use our freders & finally hummingbirds are visiting since November & due to autumn & winter around the corner thus nectar & food rather scarce. I have been reading up & watching videos caring for Hummingbirds thinking they all migrated but saw some one local had posted a photo of a wee darling gorgeous hummingbird sitting on frozen rain ( freezing rain in BC 2018 ) iced branch with berries encased like glass - so I have been learning a lot & my BF didn't know much about caring for plants or birds lol & since meeting me learning lots about caring for plants & our wild life . I like your video its simple & informative.

I'm glad you have Gary to help you when you need it. I want to hang a few more feeders and use the great ideas you have given us. There were 3 hooks already in place around the edge of my porch, which is a large porch and I use them. The porch is not ground level, but at least 6ft off the ground. My problem is that I'm 71 and using a ladder is scary, as I nearly fell over the rail once trying to screw in another hook. It's just me here, with my dogs. There are a lot of cats around, so I'm afraid to use the shepherds hooks that go into the ground. I used a chain between the feeders I have hanging and that helps, it's not a long piece of chain, but was able to hang 2 more feeders. Any way, thank you for your videos, I have learned a lot!!

I love your videos on the humming birds! I thought I had lost one of my humming birds last week. The birds are around my front door all through the day, I sit and watch them alot from inside. Last week one flew into my front glass door and fell to the deck floor. He stayed there for about 15 minutes just barely fluttering his wings. Then he finally got on his feet and just stood in one spot for another 10 minutes. But then he flew off! I sure was glad that he was able to fly away. So scared that it was going to lay there and die. They are so beautiful, I love them to death. Tfs

I make feeder canopies from 10" plastic flower pot saucers. I poke a 1/4" hole in the center and use two 1/4-20 x 2" eyebolts joined with a 7/8" coupling nut for hanging. Sandwiching the saucer between two large fender washers eliminates stress on the plastic. I also add an ant-moat made from the bottom of a half-litre soda bottle. Coating the threads of the eyebolts and coupling nut with petroleum jelly before assembly makes the ant-cup water tight. They are easily taken apart to replace the saucer or cup if necessary. I have a small year-round population of Costa's hummers and the canopies have so far been exposed to the harsh southwestern desert sun for 2-years continuous with no sign of deterioration. Walmart has a line of 10" polypropylene dinner plates that would also make nice looking canopies. - waw -

  • @AHannah79

This was my question I asked you about on messenger a couple weeks ago but they aren’t very popular yet. That people are using over the feeders out in the open to keep the rain off and suppose to help keep the nectar from spoiling as quickly. But they are making them with red bowls instead. I’ve been skeptical about using a round red bowl because of them possibly hitting the thin edges of the bowl and getting hurt. Especially if they’re fighting over feeders. And also wasn’t sure how well a red bowl would help keep the heat from the sun from spoiling the nectar as fast. I like your idea with the lids better! They don’t look dangerous like the bowls. Have they also helped keep your nectar from spoiling as fast? Thanks for giving me a better idea to use!😁❤️

@@carolmacdonald7781 Bees can not get to the sugar water if your feeder has "bee guards". Make sure that during the time your bees are looking for extra food, that you only use hummingbird feeders with built in Bee Guards, that should keep all bees away. Bees here will feed in the sun or shade, but you can move the feeder, and that will throw them off, as they do create a flight pattern, and will have to find it again if you move it. That should do the trick, thanks, Robbie

Robbie~Question. I don't have any cats, but are cats a threat if you feed hummingbirds.
    Also,
I watched a pair of mourning doves raise 2 babies on my downspout in June. The parents love the seeds that my oyster plants and a certain yellow type of Daisy provide seeds provide everyday for them. I went away for 9 weeks. Now in September they are not around the 2 plants that they love. Yesterday I saw a young hawk and we also have adult Hawks. I wondered if they got the adults and young mourning doves.
There are a pair down the block, but they don't seem to have any of their favorite flowering seeds in their yard.
    Where did mine go?
Can you do a episode on animal threats to hummingbirds?

Hi! Just hit the subscribe button! Love nature! Live in Florida, have one feeder, with no luck. Then I read they don't come around alot of animal activity, have appox8 squirrels, 9 morning doves, did have a pair of cardinals, but afer 4 days of continuing rain, never saw them again.😞 and couldn't tell you how many blue jays! Some squirrels like the patio nut mixture, some like the black sunflower seeds only, and of course some have the whole peanuts! Quite a project. We also have lizards, so cute,an friendly, feed them dried meal worms, they love them, one will sit on my shoe! SOOOO, thinking if I move the hummingbird feeder closer under the eaves then maybe the animal won't scare them, as there is a 4 foot concrete wall surrounding my patio. Yeah! Have a ton of plants, even a birdbath. Do you suggest the red sugar that is made for them, or to make my own nector? Do you think they will come, if I place it better, or too much activity with all the other animals eating all at the same time? Really need to know. Had one, then no more...HELP!! Want them also!! So bad!!

I live in Pucon Chile. I relocated here from Northern California (Lake Almanor) 5 years ago with my daughter, son-in-law and 4 grandchildren moved here from San Diego. We have alot of hummingbirds in this area. We are now going into spring so they are more actively feeding on all the blossoms of this rain forest. My question is, how is it cane sugar is good for them when it is well documented that the highly refined sugars have a direct link to MS, Cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and the list goes on and on, because a balanced PH is essential to good health with everything including our gardens. If you could explain why this sugar water is good for them instead of natural flowers I would really appreciate it. I thank you for your time.

Some thoughts on hummer-syrup sugar content: Botanists express flower-nectar sugar content as the percentage of sugar by weight NOT by volume. Hummers prefer flowers with a sugar content from about 26 to 35% by weight and prefer sucrose over fructose. For the classic 1:4 sugar + water mix, a cup of granulated cane (sucrose) sugar weighs 200 grams; four cups of cold water weighs 946 grams. The combined 1:4 mix weighs 1146 grams at 17% sucrose by weight - 9% short of the preferred sugar content range. A 1.5:4 mix contains 300g sugar and weighs 1246g at 24% sugar by weight; closer to, but still short of the minimum preferred sugar content. Raising the mix to 2:4 gives 400g sugar, 946g water, 1346g total at 30% sugar by weight. Benjamin F Tucker was the first to experiment with mass-feeding California hummers in the 1930s and 40s. His syrup mix was "half sugar, half water" (see Popular Mechanics, December 1946, p123); NOT 1:4 as claimed by The Audubon Society. A 1:1 sugar mix is 45% sugar by weight - high, but still acceptable to hummers. Beyond this I say naught except that hummers visiting feeders in my yard are well and properly fed. Reader discretion with due diligence is advised - waw -
