Your start was just like mine Felipe, it's cool I think it's also about the age, we're almost the same age and for me was the same, sitting close to the radio day after day, training my years and just trying to learn as many songs I could and my mother there screaming "you're going mad you don't do anything else of your life".

Man you gotta respect Kiko , I mean how humble and friendly he is . Many musicians don’t give a damn about their former bandmates or friends after their success or band breakups but Kiko on the other hand is so down to earth. Respect for Kiko
If you've followed them since they started, it makes sense. But you are definitely right, most of the time ego gets to people and that's what ruins harmony in many instances.

I have known about Angra for at least twenty years, but I never gave them a listen until the day it was announced of Andre Matos passing. In the past two months I have become a huge Angra fan and got every studio album and live album from their catalog. I love all of them , especially Angel's Cry, Fireworks, Rebirth, Rebirth Tour Live In Sao Paulo, Temple Of Shadows, Angel's Cry 20th Anniversary Tour, and Secret Garden. I wish that I gave Angra a chance a long, long time ago. I have been a huge fan of bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Iced Earth, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Scorpions, and many more for over thirty years, and now Angra is on my same list of my all time favorite bands ever. Not only are past and present members of Angra are PHENOMENAL musicians and songwriters, but they are also great people with huge hearts. Most musicians that are very skilled in their craft can be arrogant because they know how amazing they are, but this video shows me that some very skilled musicians can still be humble and remember where they came from. Kiko you are the MAN!!!!!

What a great bass player. Great tips. If a person wants to be a pro musician everything you guys talked about is really great advice. It's funny. I have been playing for over 40 years, and when I first started I figured out songs by the radio as well, but only if I didn't have the album. If I had the album I used my ear and woukd work on the songs by taking the song and dividing into several small parts and solving those, which in turn solved the whole song. Great technique, and of course used in many challenges in life and mathematical.

Great vid. I only took one lesson in my life, but have been playing since about 1977. I'm 58 in July.
I learn complicated parts by using the math concept of breaking the big problem down into a very small set of numerous problems and solving each of those which in turn solves the whole. I know just enough theory to be dangerous. 😜😂 If I am in key, I'm happy, and I experiment until my ear ( which I have trained well ) tells me what I am PLAYING sounds good. Then it's good. My ear doesn't lie. 😉

I also try to learn it to the point that it's second nature and muscle memory.. I do the same in my shooting and self defense practice with a firearm. It should be second nature. Just like driving you don't remember how many stop lights you encountered, but you know you stopped at all of them. At least this is my approach, but I am not an expert at all. I play for fun mostly. I have played in a few bands though doing covers of 80s and 70s bands I love, and originals. Music is like water and food. I need it for life. 😉
Great advice! For me, at 50 something, I've stopped trying to play like Petrucci or Kiko. But I love listening and learning, and I have never used a metronome. I have an internal clock. Saw Kiko with Anthony Crawford and Virgil Donati in LA twice. Loved it!!! And I would rather play with folks, than play the 7 modes for hours!

I love the solo battle that Felipe and Kiko have on the Rebirth World Tour Live In Sao Paulo show right before they get into Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast song. That show is the first time I ever saw Felipe with Angra and it is one of my favorites. These guys are insanely AMAZING musicians!!

Interesting, even kiko living now in America, I feel the bassplayer english more natural, just a little curiosity
I get your point but on the other hand, he speaks 5 or 6 languages, pretty hard to master them all.
It's not about living in a place man, it involves many complexities.
I'm living in Vancouver for 3 years now and sometimes I meet some people who are living here for 20 years with and english that I can't really udnerstand well, and when I tell them I'm here for 3 years that ask if in my country we also speak english, but not it's not a reality, however, it has a lot with getting in contact with the language in the early years of your life somehow, I've been using english while working with some clients abroad for around 10 years now, but never speaking english, mostly reading and writing a lot. The main thing here in Vancouver in my case was to focus on the pronunciation and get used to a huge diversity of accents, voice tones and natural speed to improve the fluency etc.

Kiko, eu tenho curiosidade para saber qual é a relação de vocês com alguns músicos brasileiros que não tocam propriamente rock; de que forma esses caras influenciaram vocês - se é que influenciaram - já que são artistas que tocam outros estilos. A relação do Felipe, por exemplo, com o Nico Assumpção ou o Ney Conceição. Do Bruno com o Kiko Freitas ou Edison Machado... Enfim, dá pra ver que vocês bebem de outras fontes, e por isso seria legal ver vocês falando um pouco mais sobre o assunto.
a questão do tempo abordada ai é essencial. afinal o tempo é a "plataforma" primordial para a musica. estamos compondo em cima dele, como se fosse uma mesa de trabalho. Há quem diga que 'fazer música' é 'moldar o tempo'. Todos os aspectos musicais perpassam pela manipulação do tempo e TAMBÉM é assim com o resultado que obtemos enquanto ouvintes. certas músicas podem ter 10 minutos, mas se for interessante, para o ouvinte pode ter se passado somente 4 minutos após o final, por ex. Ou certas músicas curtas que não parecem acabar, de 'chatas' que são, por não causarem interesse em quem ouve. rsrs

I love your approach for bass, because that´s what mine has been...I prefer to know the song, and when the love for the music and the feeling is so hurting that I want to play it I do try by ear,,then look for videos or tabs...but I think that what is in your ears will never go away..Anyway, I wish I had your memory for Dream Theater songs, jajajajaj!
Felipe I really love your basslines for the Trio..(Kiko , Valverde and you ) Really strong, groovy and musical at the same time ..I love the way you the three , create the space for each other to "shine"...And be one with the music!

As vezes eu sinto falta de ter algum conteúdo tecnico pra tirar música e não ficar catando as notas um tempão como o Felipe disse.
Algumas bandas vendem "songbooks" com partituras completas para várias músicas ou álbuns. Se vc lê partitura e está disposta a investir, eu recomendo.

Não concordo. O principal "emprego" do Kiko é ser o guitarrista do Megadeth, que é uma banda americana e projetada mundialmente. Este emprego coloca o Kiko num outro patamar de carreira. Hoje ele tem que corresponder o público da banda e carreira solo. Gostando ou não, o inglês é a língua mais utilizada atualmente no mundo, além de ser a língua principal das letras do Angra. Observando estes fatos, me surpreende o seu comentário falando de falta de respeito (???) com o público brasileiro. Falta de respeito com o público seria diminuir a qualidade do conteúdo postado de uma hora para a outra. Vamos aproveitar que estamos vendo o material do principal guitarrista brasileiro da atualidade. 😉
