I’m a Scottish guy watching an Irish band singing a tribute to America and I wanna cry. When that curtain falls....shit man, it’s heartbreaking and euphoric at that same time.

American here, in my early 20's on 9/11. This performance is gutting in the most... heartfelt way.

The names was done during the U2 Elevation Tour shows before the Super Bowl. This is, by far the greatest halftime show ever. Nothing even comes close. It was not only a great performance, but it was an iconic cultural event. After 9/11 big events cancelled. Sports and concerts and other large scale events were put on hold. Flights were cancelled for a while. It took a while to get back to normalcy. So this halftime show was enormously important. Many artists could have done an entertaining show. U2 went far beyond that. They caught the zeitgeist of the times, and delivered an experience like no other. People were crying, screaming, shaking, dancing, hugging and shivering. It was a cathartic euphoric communal healing rejuvenating event that was greater than just great entertainment. Every other halftime show was, at best, just a great performance of spectacle excite and music (sometimes even live and performed excellently). The next best halftime show was Prince, which again, was just a really great performance in the Rain, nothing more. It was also about him. U2 performance (as usual) was a communal experience. No other band could elevate the show, and make everyone forget they were at a football game, coming together fully enraptured that emotional release, expression and shared oneness. Other bands would have made it a spectacle, gone over the top with fantastical fashion, conversation-conjuring wardrobe bits and pieces, lavish lasers and lights, and monster medley of musicians like all other Superbowl halftime shows. Instead, U2 chose to keep it simple, the flag was a small reveal inside his jacket (not part of the set. not blaring across the stadium), It was small, and inside his jacket, close to him. Intimate. That was intentional symbolism. It came at the end, after the clear, dedicated focus on the names was over. Here too, the scrim had the effect of falling (it could have been lifted, or pulled down), then the lights came up and out into the crowd, immediately after the fall, during climax of the song.

That was an awesome assessment of U2's performance in contrast to that delicate, emotional time we all experienced as a nation. Togetherness, a truly unified solidarity was born out of that horrific terrorist attack on 9/11/2001 - for a up to a year, liberal and Conservative, Democrat or Republican, Caucasian or African ancestry, all seemed to melt into one authentic patriotism and each of us represented the United States of America with unquestionable pride. We could use a heavy dose of unification and empathy during these troubling times. I will leave my political viewpoints out of that conclusion just to allow for those sentiments to ring sincere. 🙂 However, wonderfully written comment, seemed more like a professionally impressive informative article from a reputable magazine than a simple whimsical response on TH-cam! I enjoyed it, again, you demonstrated great insight and really captured the symbolic meaning of this particular U2 performance at that specific time and place.

@@bodies2magenta Im humbled. Thanks for such a complimentary reply. I feel it was what we were all experiencing and needed. And I very much agree on needing that unity today.

So very lucky that this was my only Super Bowl in person. Absolutely amazing. Pregame was Paul McCartney and the Boston Pops. Got to drink beer with Pete Coors on Bourbon St. New Orleans stepped it up big time. Security was amazing. Game was a nail biter. But U2 was so perfect. America at its best was on full display for the world.

So sad to see the names of all those folks who perished, but quite a tribute, assuming you can get past the hotness..
And we should remember , not so coincidentally, thst the Patriots won the game that year.
