Why research a company before job interview?
Most of us know we need to research on the company before a job interview. As a career coach, I often help my clients prepare for interview research. We go into details for each job description, but it's important that you do your own interview research before engaging a career coach.
How to research?
Okie, so now imagine you have got a Bytedance Interview - with ByteDance Singapore, suppose it’s in their e-Commerce business. (I’m using BytedDance as an example because Bytedance Singapore is hiring like crazy at the moment)
Part 1: Business
Before job interview
In Bytedance's case, it is privately held, but backed by many big names. ByteDance did, seek IPO as of last year.
Bytedance is rather young - such information is readily available in their website.
Bytedance is much more interntional than we'd actually think.
1.4 Neither people who upload videos to Tiktok or watch videos on TIktok are their customers, strictly speaking. Customers are those who pay, in which case, the advertisers are more likely so.
1.5 Most of products of Bytedance are using direct to consumer model, however, Lark is a B2B platform.
1.6 Most of Bytedance products are new, except for in media industry they have become NO. 1 in China. Bytedance is very new in education, gaming, etc.
1.7 For Bytedance, it looks pretty straightforward, that any of their business lines that bring traffic holds the potential to complete the transaction cycle as ecommerce.
1.8 When a business is reasonably new, today any tech firm will go after Growth first, profitability second.
1.9 Bytedance is one of those companies that created financial wonders.
1.10 Any major news recently? What caused those?
Part 2 The industry:
2.1 What is happening in the industry and what are some of the biggest trends?
2.2 Competitor landscape: In the big picture, how is the company positioned (the challenges it’s facing, the advantages it has, and the mission it’s set to achieve)? What is the size of the business, and also comparison to its key competitors? Who are the competitors?
2.3 What is the company’s competitive advantage at core?
2.4 What’s the ecosystem and how does the company interact with other companies in the industry? Who are the main partners?
2.5 How are all these in the light of your business line?
Most of above can be answered if you find a good market report, and make sure it’s up to date. Things change very rapidly today in the tech space, especially for a fast growing company like ByteDance. Following Tiktok Ban and the ban in Bytedance India, how will the company tackle these challenges, and where is the company's next growth market?
Part 3 Culture and people
3.1 What is the culture of the industry in general?
3.2 What is the culture of the company? What do insiders say? What does Glassdoor say? And what do they say on their website (values, culture)?
3.3 What will the company be eager to defend?
3.4 What does the founder believe?
Zhang Yiming's idol is Kazuo Inamori(稻盛和夫). Many of the values from Kazuo Inamori's book have shown up on BYteDance's website as values. So isn't this time for you to read up on Inamori's book?
3.5 Anything special about the organization structure?
3.6 The background of people the company hired

How did your interview go?
Hello , please i have a question.i had 3 Rounds and i recieved a positive feedback from the Recruiter, however they say that they are still reviewing more condidats and i have to wait .what does that mean because is it 3 weeks now , does that means that i am refused ?
If they come back, they will. If they don't, they won't. When your thinking and wondering do not change anything about the end result, move on.
Im not native english speaker i hope they call back .can i success in this?
