  • Don't get me wrong. I love Timo Boll, but I just can't help feeling that if one could combine his current experience, forehand and the backhand from the pre 2012 era, it would be amazing!
    I do not own the videos. Most of them were taken from WTT except for the last one which you can find here

    It's the ball but don't forget the modern rubbers also. After speed glue was banned the technique had to change, add that to the plastic ball and you have your answer. Table tennis looks different now than it did, all players had to make important adjustments or change something in their game. I liked the "old" version more.

      Are you saying that table tennis took on a similar transformation as court tennis when racquets changes from wooden small frames ( until the early 90s or kate 80s there were still users) to large synthetic ones? The "Old" tennis is far more dynamic, trying, and entertaining to watch in my opinion. Now everyonenhammers it downline and coming up is an oddity. Has table tennis changed? What were balls made from before plastic?

      @@NoWheyHombre The balls were made of celluloid, i liked them a lot more than the new plastic ones.

      @@NoWheyHombre Yes, table tennis has undergone a similar change due to more modern equipment like carbon fiber inlaid rackets and sophisticated rubbers + sponges. However, the change for both table tennis and tennis is not entirely due to progress in equipment but our knowledge of the physics of the sports have improved substantially as well. Techniques are much more fine tuned and there are countless research papers done that change the way we play.
      You can easily see this when you compare body movement of the athletes today versus the past, the old tennis/table tennis almost looks like a ballet, with flowing movements. While modern tennis/table tennis is a lot more compact, with full focus on energy transfer from the ground, similar to martial arts. Before plastic, the material used for table tennis balls was celluloid.

      I agree. As a kid I had a huge swinging backhand which was my main weapon. Today, 25 years later I cannot land this shot any more. I blame the plastic ball and tensor rubbers for this but maybe it’s just my age 👴🏻🤷🏻‍♂️

    He has changed his swing likely due to the change in the dynamics of the new plastic ball, his physical ability from aging, and the swing speed required to recover in time during a volley so he can get to the next ball and be in position to hit the ball effectively.
    Players are also trained to play closer to the table.

    He mentioned in one of his video that with the plastic ball he is hitting the ball harder instead of brushing. So he starts with a more open racquet and only when hitting he goes over the ball and closes the racquet. Less spin, but more control.

    The problem with big backhand strokes is that when they work, they're absolutely beautiful and devastating, but much less consistent and they miss a lot. Compact strokes are much more consistent.

    • @drupepong
      @drupepong  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would you say the same is applicable to big forehand strokes as well?

  • @longrange957
    @longrange957 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Maybe there was something else, but all your examples from the earlier times with the big swing were in the situation where Timo had to reach for the backhand. He was transitioning from forehand to backhand on the run and had time and space for a bigger swing. With FZD the ball goes into the body and in the example with Harimoto the ball was coming into the elbow -- not much time for a big swing either.

    • @drupepong
      @drupepong  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair point, but I'd say the first point against Schlager and the Harimoto point, the ball comes onto the elbow. But I agree, which is I was also looking into the action during practice as well.

    Тимо великий тенисист и человек. Но. Для совремеенного спорта удары слишком размашисты и справа и слева. И еще у европейских тенисменов привычка играть далеко от стола. Я уж не знаю: нехватка реакции, нехватка резкости, просто переоценка соперников, привычка играть вторым номером? Посмотрите на Фана и Ма, насколько резкие и короткие движения, не дающие провалиться после удара.

      This. All strokes are shorter than they used to be. Compare the technique of the 90s with the 2000s and those with the post 2010s. You see the difference immediately. Plastic ball adds to that, but you need to be more compact because the game and tactics sped up.
