    Joni is 77 now and no longer tours and hardly plays music for performance. She sings a little from time to time but has had health problems as she ages and also devotes a lot more time to her painting. Joni is a fabulous artist and musician, singer-songwriter and I love her work very much.

    You are very insightful, this is about her relationship with Leonard Cohen, and the line about, "I met a woman who had a mouth like yours," is what Leonard's mother told Joni. So you nailed it.

    Prince was a huge Joni fan. Attending one of her concerts very early. He plays this on a tribute album too. This song has been covered many times. I like Diana Krall’s version.
    And just announced today, Joni will be receiving a Kennedy Center honor.
    The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its 44th lifetime achievement award winners. They are: Motown founder Berry Gordy, opera star Justino Díaz, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, entertainer Bette Midler and television impresario Lorne Michaels, who created Saturday Night Live.

      @MrDiddyDee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I would have put poet before singer. Her words are as vivid, revealing and insightful as any other worthy poetry I've ever read. They stand up in their own right, there's few songwriters who have her degree of mastery of the language to do that. Like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan or Neil Young they are the best people to sing their own songs, yet they are totally unique in their own singing styles and the world has acclimatised to their idiosyncrasies.

  • @1nelsondj
    @1nelsondj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Joni recorded a string of must-own masterwork albums from "Clouds" to "Hejira". This album is held up by many as her best, not quite there for me but still excellent. This song and 'River' get a lot of attention but my favorite track on the album is 'This Flight Tonight'. Nazareth covered it as a single.
    My favorite album is "For the Roses" which came right after "Blue" with even better singing and fuller arrangements but still confessional songs. Some cut right to my heart, the closing track is a tribute to the deaf Beethoven.
    She no longer records or tours but there are filmed concerts you can watch. That's what I like about recordings, they can make an artist immortal.

    As others are mentioning, the instrument she is playing is an Appalachian dulcimer which is played across the lap. She is accompanied by James Taylor on guitar (whom she once had romanced).
    As i understand it, she had written this song to/for Leonard Cohen. His line to her: "I am as constant as the Northern Star - - -"
    was a line from Shakespeare. "Constantly in the darkness" was her very clever retort.
    The woman she met who had a mouth like his, was his mother (what a poetic way to name her) who knew his lies, his devels, his deeds. She warned Joni: "be prepared to bleed". (Wow, thanks, Mom). Still, love will not be advised. He was in her blood like holy wine. What an incredible poet. Thanks for this.
    I would love if you could react to
    RIVER, also on this album.

    This is the first reaction to this song that get's it right. Most don't listen to the lyrics and assume she is speaking kind words about the relationship. The entire song starts out "Just before our love got lost". The first part is such a burn to the person she wrote about.

  • @tonymarshharveytron1970
    @tonymarshharveytron1970 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Harri, Great Video. I have listened to this song many times, and what I take from it is that she is totally infatuated with this man, and she is preared to take him with all of his good and bad points. As she says in the lyrics, he has touched her soul, he comes out in her lines from time to time.
    As someone who has been with the same wonderful girl for over 50 years, I can relate to this sentiment. I am convinced that my wife and I are two halves of the same spirit that have come back together. Her touch makes me go week, and every time I see her I tingle all over, she is my ' Holly Wine ', and if it came to it, I would not hesitate for a second, I would die for her. I also associate with the lirics of the ' Cat Stevens ' song, ' I can't think of the right words to say', ' I long to feel you, I long to feel my arms around you, feel my arms around you, like the sea around the shaw '.
    Anyone who may read this comment, and who is lucky enough to find someone they love, be true to that person, and tell them every day that you love them. Three words, I love you, 8 letters, can tranform dispare into warmth and hope instantly, and it costs nothing. Love is the most valuable thing we posess.
    Listen to as many of Joni's songs as you can, some you will not like so much, but there are very many gems. Cold blue steel, Amellia, Little green, I am on a lonely road, the gallery, the midway, last time I saw Ritchard, Carey, Chelsy Morning, and so many more. Kind regards,
    Tony Marsh.

    I forgot to give you some of my favorites from Joni. I love: Blue, For Free, Willy, Richard, California and Coyote, all are worthy of a reaction.

    Her more uptempo songs are great as well. “In France They Kiss On Main Street “ is an example. “Car On A Hill” another gem 💎
