Police K-9 Takes Down Man Armed With Axe | San Diego

- 06.12.2021 | 2:05 AM | SAN DIEGO - San Diego Police responded to a call of a male holding an ax and a large knife along University Ave. When officers arrived, they encountered the male and gave him several commands to drop the weapons in his hands. Police attempted to talk down the male but it appeared that the male suffered from a mental illness. After several minutes of negotiating, Officers attempted to take the male in custody by using non-lethal bean bag rounds, pepper spray. Also deploying a taser and a K-9 dog. The male was finally taken into custody and was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. There were no injuries reported to any officers.

Great use of non-lethal tactics including a K9 officer to neutralize this situation. The disturbed individual was clearly becoming more agitated so intervention was a MUST here. The individual was subdued, his wound(s) were dressed, he was restrained on a stretcher & off he went to hospital mental ward. Everyone lives to see another day. True professionalism and concern displayed by the SDPD officers! Kudos to them!

I love when people who have no clue, are suddenly experts on how to apprehend a criminal or mentally ill person with a weapon. 🤦♀️🙄
Criminals are one thing but those of us with mental disorders can be dealt with a little more kindly at times. I keep myself thoroughly medicated and go to regular therapy so I don't go off the rails but others aren't so fortunate to be able to afford to do that so they end up at the mercy of a brain that is quite literally malfunctioning and lying to them, distorting what they think is reality. We of what I call the "mentally interesting persuasion" aren't weak because of our disorders or whatnot; in many cases, we truly cannot help ourselves because our brain is telling us something that isn't real. Surely there's a reasonable way to help someone in the grips of psychosis a little more kindly. In any case, while it was disturbing to have to send in the dog, it beat sending in a bullet.
Clearly they tried to get him to stop without using force, but when the confrontation goes on for this long they didn’t really have much of a choice. Not to mention the fact that he is armed his a large knife and axe, and considering the person is clearly out of it who knows could have happened. At least no one got killed.

@@LauraS1 Mental disorders are a problem. If it makes you threaten people with an axe, the disorder is irrelevant. If you survive, someone can help you with it later. Otherwise we could always send people like you to talk to the guy while he's holding the weapons. Good luck!

Genuinely glad to see a non-lethal outcome and I'm beyond impressed with the patience and understanding the police gave to this man who was clearly unwell and injured, despite the obnoxious commentary from the side-lines. I'd argue the line falls some-where in the middle of whether or not a person is refusing to comply out of comprehension or a genuine inability to function and think. Mentally ill people are people who are ill, and the degree of which and potential of rehabilitation falls on the shoulders of experts who unfortunately can get it wrong. It's encouraging to see that as time goes on people are starting to respect that, even if these two men were displaying ignorance.

Pray that that should never happen to you. I used to laugh at the mentally ill and think unkindly of them. That was before my genetics let me develop several mental disorders as I aged. When it happens to you personally, you really rethink your beliefs, let me tell you. LOL I have been VERY fortunate in that I have been able to get decent mental health insurance and live in an area with good mental health providers. When one is lower or working class or simply poor or homeless, there's no such thing and that's when people "go out of control".

@@ceruleanc505 I'm sure that's part of it. But mostly, I believe its because we as a society (police, too) aren't allowed to hold citizens accountable for their actions like we used to. Its a free-for-all world since the riots started last year. People are afraid of confrontation. Anything goes now, and pushing the edge of the envelope is allowed.

A mentally disturbed individual armed with an axe and very large bladed tool in public represents one of the most challenging incidents for Police Officers.
Whilst he may not appear to be presenting a threat to members of the public or to Police Officers at the scene, he cannot be allowed free movement whilst heavily armed and has to be detained for a psychiatric evaluation at the very least.
Not only can he not be allowed to injure citizens or Officers, he also cannot be allowed to hurt himself.
In far too many instances of mentally disturbed individuals coming into contact with Police Officers, the individuals have been killed by Police in highly disputed incidents.
It is good to see an outcome that didn't involve the individual being shot or beaten to death by the Police.
This just happened at my school. Kid got shot for holding a pair of scissors with which he scraped the officer's leg and got shot like 6 or 7 times by multiple officer's at once. The bystanders told the cops that the kid was previously unarmed and was distressed but yeah

Another job very well done by the men, women and K-9's in blue! They showed a ton of strength, resolve and patience...by not shooting that guy that's off camera. "Duuuuude maaaaan, no one deserves to get shot!" and then a few minutes later "This fool's got a f'n axe and a knife yeah, it's f'n you or him". Well fine sir, you are a stellar example of someone that does. And I can tell y'all from experience that the "hold yourself hostage" tactic does NOT usually work. There was this one time that it did but I won't bore you with the details.
But in all seriousness that was an amazing job by the PD and I hope that man got the help that he seems to have desperately needed.
