    Everyone's pointing out the premonitions already, but I want to point out the Master hypnotized Buffy in the season one finale. It's how he killed her. So we have seen it happen before Drusilla does it to Kendra. It's just not something every vampire can do.

    Speaking as a follower who always stays for the after-chat, regarding the moonlight conversation, Buffy runs on magic rules not literaly physics rules. There is something specific to being hit by direct sunlight that is dangerous to them, and it doesn't relate to photons or anything because Buffy vampires are governed by the laws of magic.
    Dru and Buffy have both been established to have precognitive powers, Buffy in her visions of the Master at the end of season 1 and Dru in Passion when she sees that Jenny is preparing to re-ensoul Angel.
    James Marsters' performance as Spike is so delightful in this episode, he's got good material but really makes it his own. This episode is mainly about putting the pieces on the board, the next episode is where the payoff comes, in spades. One thing I will say about Buffy as a show is that at the time we didn't necessarily notice quite how many of the recurring characters who die are women. It's much more common than for men. So I think Micky's reaction is more relatable than some people might find.
    Can't wait to watch the season finale with you, it's a serious contender for my number 1 episode of all time

      @@kimberlyjeanne9456 To be fair, you're trying to apply logic to DRUSILLA. Her logic does not resemble our Earth logic. It's insane troll logic.

    "how is that fair, you're punishing the human for something they didn't do?"
    Miss Calender's Uncle: "It is not Justice we serve, but vengeance!"

  • @PaulMason99
    @PaulMason99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    So, the issue of you're punishing the wrong person - I agree. So, I think does Joss Whedon. In the commentary track to Innocence he talks about how they'd set up the curse but then realised it doesn't make any sense. Not only are you punishing the wrong person, but it's set up so that if he achieves happiness he reverts to Angelus and people die. That's not good. So his solution, from a writing pov, was "Vengeance is a living thing." "It's not justice we serve but Vengeance". They serve Vengeance regardless of whether it makes sense, like it's some kind of irrational god. To be fair this doesn't make a ton more sense but it's something. And if you go with it, it buys you the whole Angel -> Angelus turn which is so fun.
    Slayers are prophetic, it's part of the gift. Buffy has had prophetic dreams before, they even named an episode after it. The deja-vu moment makes Buffy check again and that leads them to find the disc. It doesn't have any extra significance other than that, but given what the disc contains that's enough.
    Also, I don't know if it's been established except by example but some vampires can hypnotise but not all it seems. The Master could and Dru can apparently.
    As for the moonlight thing - I don't think it's ever addressed, but it's a potential issue in lots of different vampire lores. As far as the show goes as long as they're out of direct sunlight they're usually OK.
    Another thing he said in the same commentary was that they cared far more about things like the emotions in a scene than whether the logic is water tight. There's a lot of hand-wavy explanations in this show but it's worth it for the ride.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When Angelus was awakened, he clearly had recollections of Buffy making him feel like a human. Hence, he was being punished by giving Angel control of the body that they both inhabit.

  • @josephlamicela1996
    @josephlamicela1996 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    Buffy has had premonitions, predictive dreams, and weird intuition before. Giles explains in the first episode that it’s part of her Slayer power set. Destiny does partially drive a Slayer. This is why a HUGE chunk of the deep Buffy fandom believe Dru is a potential Slayer who never called. Either another was called instead, or the Slayer of her time lasted so long that Dru was too old to be called. It’s kind of a very popular fan head canon that Dru’s visions are a holdover from a Slayer destiny she never got to fulfill. That also explains why Angel was so obsessed with torturing her for a significant amount of time, to drive her mad before turning her.

    • @moonystic9417
      @moonystic9417 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I never bought into that theory. Buffy has prophetic *dreams* . Drusilla has *visions* while she's awake. Not the same. Another character from S7 had visions like Dru, that didn't make her a potential. It's a supernatural universe, random people have gifts too.

    • @josephlamicela1996
      @josephlamicela1996 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ah the one-two-punch of Angel's "Irish" accent and Kendra's ??? accent. RIP Kendra! I do wish we'd had a few more episodes with you before they killed you off, but it's fun seeing Dru in action. The stalker vibes from 1996 Angel didn't age well.
    But those are really just nitpicks ribbing the show in good fun, I love this two-parter overall and where things go from here. SMG's acting continues to be great, the dialogue holds up better than a ~25 year old show has any right to, and I remember episodes like this were unlike 99% of what was on TV in those days. Can't wait for next week's finale!

      It’s just how this younger generation thinks. They love to spout their knee-jerk reactions as the “right” thing to feel. It’s like the young/old relationship between human and vampire, Buffy and Angel. I’ve seen a lot of young people react to this show and most feel creeped out by the age difference. No one wants to take into account that one of the two aren’t human and those social “rules” don’t apply. I watched this when it aired and I was around 20yo. I never once thought those thoughts about their relationship. This generation definitely overthinks what they’re given here, most likely due to how much content is available now vs. then.

    I always hated Xanders thought process in the library because it's based more on emotion instead of logic but he tries to present it as logic. The goal should be to stop Angelus, the spell can be done at distance as soon as they get the stuff which means they don't have to wait to find him and Buffy doesn't have to be in danger. The spell is the logical choice if your goal is getting Angelus off the streets as quickly and with the least amount of danger to the group.

    • @struggleskywalker1025
      @struggleskywalker1025 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, but after what Angelus did, if you turn him back into Angel, are you really going to be able to stand to be in the same room as him or stand knowing that he's still alive? And honestly, even if he doesn't go back to Buffy, what if he falls in love again and reverts back to Angelus AGAIN? You'll essentially be right back to where you started. While I do agree Xander was letting his emotions get the better of him, he wasn't necessarily wrong. The best way to stop Angelus and end Angel’s suffering/give Angel some sort of peace without turning him into a homicidal psychopath is to put him down.

  • @whimzen
    @whimzen ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Also, I think there is a fan theory that Drusilla might have been a potential Slayer and that is why she had the ability to see things before they happen like Buffy does. However, Angel turned her into a Vampire preventing her from ever becoming a Slayer. Not sure if that was ever confirmed by Joss Whedon or not.

    Déjà vu is not something you’ve already experienced….it’s just an impression . Some say it’s because you must have dreamt about it before, so when it happens you feel like you’ve already lived it. Others say there is a more scientific explanation for it ( like your eyes see the situation a second before your brain or something like that , so it’s like you seen it twice)

    But anyway, back then, well, as with any fad, there are those that ignore them, resist them, are oblivious to them, or can't afford them. In my family, hand-me downs, was still a practice. The elders would swap clothing that the children outgrew, sometimes leading to public shaming, by wearing girls clothes, that snap or button from the other side! Or sometimes you get to be "cool", by wearing vintage shirts, like my father's shirts that he outgrew.
    While others at school dressed like, "The Brady Bunch" or "The Partridge Family", or whatever. I was dressed like I was in, "The Andy Griffith Show", and getting called, "Opie". At least in, Pauls Valley, when we lived close to so many cousins. It was when we lived in, Moore, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, or Ada, that we got new clothes and looked up to date, as there was no one around to pass along their old clothes. Whew. 😁
    Edit: Oops! I went back to the 1960s. By the 1990s, with everyone grown up, the hand-me-downs supply was long gone, for us. The youngest were still having them forced on them! 😁

    Buffy does have special dreams, sometimes . . . but she's not actually a seer like Drusilla. The moment with the floppy disk was just her being like "oh wait hold on, I just missed something " but the writers just wanted it to feel dramatic, that's my take anyway. 🤷. Looking forward to the final reaction 👍

  • @Buffy8Fan

    Nearly panicked when this didn't show up in my notifications.
    I don't get upset that The Normies laugh, I just hope they don't miss anything while doing so.
    Most accents in the series have been criticized, but especially David Boreanaz as human Angel and Bianca Lawson as Kendra. Bianca Lawson was given a last minute change from her character originally being another nationality and her voice coach was too ambitious and wanted to do an accent from a remote region of Jamaica, while David Boreanaz just cannot do an Irish accent, but his character is written as being from Ireland.
    I laughed when they couldn't recognize Drusilla.
    Drusilla's always been able to see the future. It's how Angelus was warned that Jenny was trying to restore Angel's soul.
    I always wondered what "deja vu" Buffy was talking about, but also assumed it was an expansion of Buffy's dreams.
    I don't look at it as Angel being punished. I look at it as Angel is the punishment. Angel isn't cursed. Angelus is. Angel had his time. And he spent it chasing women and died because of it. Angel is technically only a good person because of Angelus's actions. If he didn't feel that guilt he would have been a player and alcoholic for a short life. Either way he wouldn't be "alive" in modern day times. His life is just as a curse against Angelus. It may be unfair. But it is also his second chance, as he wasn't seen as decent in life.
    Xander disliking the idea of restoring Angel's soul isn't the issue I have with him in that moment. It is how he chooses to talk to people. He even starts in on Cordelia before realizing she agrees with him. I lost all respect for Xander when he said to Giles about Jenny, "Yeah, well she's dead." This line is not only rude, but shows a personality I cannot get behind whether I agree with him or not. Plus saying that line is hypocritical of defending her against death in _Passion._ If he wanted to get his point across without having an attitude and without being rude he should have followed Kendra's later example when she calmly tells Buffy, "I tend to side with your friend Xander on this one. Angel should be killed." Buffy talks to Kendra, but everyone has issues with Xander's attitude. If Xander cannot express his opinions to his friends without attacking them, they won't care what his opinions are, with this or anything else. But Buffy does care about Kendra's opinion enough to explain things to her because Kendra is respectful in her disagreement against Buffy.
    Thank god they cannot get the reboot off the ground. There are so many threads outside of Buffy herself they could just expand upon, even at this point that there isn't a need for a reboot. And they don't even need to do that.
    Not only was Angel stalking Buffy from the day he found out she was a slayer, but he also lied about it. He pretends he is seeing her for the first time in _Welcome to the Hellmouth._ I've seen people argue it was for a good reason, but there were other ways he could have handled it. Such as asking to fight beside Buffy. Explaining Whistler and what Whistler said. Saying he'd like to help, but doing so from the shadows (metaphorically speaking). He never even had to initially bring up being a vampire with scenarios like these. Angel just chose to continue stalking instead.
    The Normies missed the vague explanation of Whistler saying he's a balancing demon.
    The curse isn't about happiness. Its about feeling guilty. When he doesn't feel any guilt over Angelus' action...no soul. Enyos told Jenny that in _Innocence_ when he said, "One moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts, and that soul is taken from him." The Scoobies unintentionally create a situation in _Innocence_ where they have Jenny say Buffy did it. That is true. But happiness is just one of many vehicles that could create Angel not feeling guilty. And if he were to ever get his soul back, whether anyone knows it or not, it would be harder for Angel to not feel guilty even around Buffy because of Angelus' actions. But none of it matters to the characters themselves, because they all believe losing his soul is about happiness, and specifically sex with Buffy. The curse is actually all very well done, writing-wise, but many people don't catch all the nuances without multiple viewings over many years. Even I didn't for a long time.
    Angel's soul isn't on the floppy disk. The curse that was lost to Jenny's people was retranslated by Jenny and she saved it onto the disk before Angelus killed her.

    Y'all need to watch/react to Angel when you''re finished with Buffy. Also, the ring that Buffy was looking at is a claddagh ring, an Irish ring. She and Angel both had one and it symbolizes love, loyalty and friendship. If worn with the heart facing inwards it represents that you are in a committed relationship. My husband gave me a claddagh ring as a gift prior to to my engagement ring and wedding ring. He had one as well and is the love of my life. Saying all of this, I think I understand Buffy's heartbreak when she looked at her ring. She lost the love of her life and was grief stricken over it.

    So, the curse was supposed to be ended when Angie experienced "perfect happiness" which not to be mean the Romani that cursed him, he was a mess of a man and they had no expectation that he would escape the trainwreck era. They should have absolutely thought about it and given him no chance of being happy.

  • @raesnest
    @raesnest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Angel can find love again but if he experiences a true moment of "Perfect Happiness", it's a wrap. What a lot of people don't talk about when discussing this is that "perfect happiness" is rare and very difficult to obtain. I've long had a theory that one of the reasons he was able to reach that moment of "perfect happiness" was because he was largely oblivious to the fact that his soul could be lost if it happened. Being with Buffy in that moment allowed him to forget everything else in his life and simply love her and be loved by her but if he'd known more about his curse, he probably would have had a harder time separating his knowledge of that from just focusing on loving Buffy. Thus, his happiness while making love with her would have been slightly imperfect. Still genuine and honest, don't get me wrong, but not exactly "perfect" like the lifting of the curse requires.
    For Angel now, it would be even harder for him to reach "perfect happiness" again after losing his soul this season, terrorizing everyone, and killing a bunch of people. This is because every moment of happiness he experiences after this would be overshadowed by his own sadness, guilt, fear, and/or insecurity. So, while he can find love again, he can have sex, he can even feel some measure of contentment and joy either with Buffy or with someone else...it is extremely unlikely he can naturally experience the same kind of pure, unadulterated happiness that would be considered "perfect" enough for the curse to lift again. Definitely not unless he is aided by something or some situation that allows him to either forget the nature of his curse and/or the past.

    Mark 31:30. In the movie, Kristy Swanson's, "Buffy", has prescient dreams more often. "Deja Vu", means that you just think you've done it before. There's a different term for having actually experienced a moment before, but it's a fictional concept, not a real one from, Psychology. 🤔

    I think Xander was 100% wrong. Angelus is an extremely dangerous opponent and the safest way to defeat him is to turn him back into ensouled Angel. It got nothing to do with forgiving him for killing Jenny. BTW, David's Irish accent was perfect. I claim that this is how Irish sounded like in the mid 1700s and I'm prepared to die on this hill.

Spike, just to smoke! Yet, they stop short of putting cobwebs inside them, when they show us their atrophied internal organs! Supposedly a supply of fresh blood, lubricates those organs.

    If you're watching the HD remastered version a lot of the lighting was messed up, like colour tints for certain scenes. Sometimes the scenes look like midday lighting when it's supposed to be sunset etc. Not so much in this episode but in other future episodes. It's kind of a shame because the lighting can change the whole mood of a scene.. and some other mistakes you can straight up see the film crew at the edges from sloppy widening from 4:3 ratio. It's such a shame that they treated such a well loved show so poorly when it comes to preservation.

    I would have loved if they said the ritual needed to be performed at the Hellmouth. Cos really, they should have done the ritual at Giles place to avoid a vampire attack. Drusilla is a very effective vampire. It's entirely possible she didn't know Kendra was in the library and still took out a Slayer.

      I agree. I've never bought into the whole vampire demon possession thing. Common headcanon which has some merit is that in-universe, its Watcher-Lore that vampires are demons in meatsuits, to dehumanise them, to make people feel more at ease with killing other people, especially if it was someone they knew who was turned.
      Angel and Angelus are one in the same, difference is one has a conscience and feels remorse for what he has done, doubly so because a part of him enjoyed it.

      @@sagaofsarahrose I also put it in Top 5 territory, but I think Becoming Pt 2 has them all beat in how it showed how this show was willing to break all the rules of what a show could be. And by the end, every major premise of the show had been removed: Buffy's in high school, she does her job slaying vampires, she keeps her life secret from her mom, etc. It must have been a huge inspiration for TV writers. Even though Innocence was a turning point, audiences still hoped for a clean resolution that involved Angel getting his soul back. Becoming Pt 2 showed that this show wasn't just going to take the easy way out and that everything that happens matters.
