  • This boat trip with the Raritan Riverkeeper reveals a dark history about the Raritan River, but the river's beauty is also seen as efforts to clean it up continue.

It's to bad that the county is aloud to run that eye sore of a mounting with all the stink and garbage in the water the summer months are so bad with dust and stink you can open your windows if you live in that areas some day it's going to collapse in to the water on low tide you can see all the garbage in the banks don't know how they get away with it

First, I believe that ship may be the one that formerly was owned by the Shah of Iran before things went south and it was seized in the 80s. If it is the one that was next to the old Staten Island Ferry that got cut up about a decade ago then that was my understanding of the second ship.
The Raritan does hold all of those fish species above landing lane in New Brunswick, from there going downstream its brackish with striped bass, herring, shad and other fish species and eels that migrate up river to spawn.
The old depot is still defending the land it was on. Have heard from a number of people that once you pass the Expo Center you dont stray off the roadways or trails for fear of old and volatile munitions.
And yes, PCBs and lead which can settle out and accumulate in the bottom so when they try to remediate its damned if you do damned if you dont. Its not good in place, but getting it out requires disturbing it which also spreads that pollution, even if its not as concentrated. Look at the way the numbers evolved when they cleaned up the Hudson from the GE mess.

Thank You! Very informative and relaxing with a great cruise up the Raritan; a scenic transition from the tidal zone into new New Jersey's woodlands.

I used to live in New Brunswick for most of my life until we moved to Florida 20 years ago shortly after retirement. The video brought many memories and nice to see parts of the Old Raritan down river that I never got to see since did not have a boat of know any people who did. Will visit N J next month to visit family and hope to see how my old home town is doing...

Great video! I was stationed at Ft. Monmouth (54th EOD) during the late '80s, early '90s. We did a clearance of munitions that came from the arsenal for what was to become the Raritan Center I think. I believe the ordnance was 37MM antiaircraft rounds. I went by Ft. Monmouth a couple of years ago. What a shame. I came across your video while doing some research on the area as I am planning a trip down that way to look at a boat in a marina off the Raritan.
