Then the time signature of the song exists. The marimbas play in a quintuplet (1-2-3-4-5) notes twice in one beat, and the piano initially plays quintuplets once in one beat, and gets faster. Finding the measure/bar of the song is the tricky part, because that's usually when the synth will start loop in the song, so it may be 5/2, 5/3, 5/4, 5/6, 5/8, 5/12, 5/14, or something else! If there's a rhythm and a beat, then there's a time signature to the song. The synth pads do not necessarily have to dictate a missing time signature because an artist can still play these freely over the underlying layer that dictates the beat and bar counts. Don't make things up. People study years of music theory for a reason. The time signature is actually 5/2 (simplified from 5/10) because later in the song the pad notes play 7 chords on each bar, then rest for 3 bars (2 is evenly divisible by 3+7=10). That would make the most sense to me.
@@rubisdrake You’re indeed correct. There are plenty of complex jazz songs out there with interesting time signatures. My comment was meant to be hyperbolic. I wish I had advanced knowledge of musical theory.
My dad used to work in Center City Philadelphia back in the 90s. I used to imagine this is what life would sound like once I became older like him. Going to work in the big city.......
When that violin hits the high note at 0:45, I find it incredibly hard to hold back tears. When the game was only a couple years old, I was like barely 3 or so, but I distinctly remember my times messing around with the cheat console and building to my heart's content, and then starting a brand new city the very next day and repeating what I had done. I remember this song the most out of the soundtrack. I'm glad I still own the disk, even if it doesn't work on Windows 10.
@@jrdavis1992 Yes, and I was actually able to get it to run! I also got some other games to run like Red Alert 2 and The Sims, but using a VM means games are running at less than half of what it could run, so I wound up buying the game on GOG and did some other stuff with the other games I wanted to replay
@@luisvanderleirigoljunior6892 I discovered Reich in like early college and was like "Why does this make me think of SimCity????" and then this year googled it and there was an interview where one of the composers talked about it lol. Turns out SimCity was reminding me of Reich. Although I guess Reich's music inherently has a sort of cosmopolitan vibe
This song progresses like this history of evolution itself. First, simple raw existence waiting to be organized. Then (at 0:55), a spark, settling everything into order, begins a steady, irreversible march toward higher levels of complexity. I don't know about you guys, but listening to this song while I'm staring at a blank city deciding how I will sculpt it... It makes me feel like a god. Kudos to Maxis for getting me hooked on this series.
The intricacy of the rich counterpoint at the end, dude... Oh yeah, and the marimba leadup, of course! The bass notes on the piano. Every time I hear this song, I hear more counterpoint and layers of music, and I am obsessed with it.
This song fits after your city got hit by a major disaster. You stare at all the loss, all those hardworks now in ruins, all the lives that are lost. And then at 0:55... "Alright, time to rebuild"
I just listened it today after a long time and for the first time realized the obvious nod to the melody from Bittersweet Symphony from 2:28 ! Hah! What a nice touch.
I just realized this song uses Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve and I've become a different person because of this revelation. I love this song so much!
There is no time signature. The marimba and piano play in a 5/4 loop while the artist just free styles with those epic pads. Such a beautiful song.

Martin's tunes play in my mind's radio always, beautiful compositions to harmonize order to.

This game has the most amazing soundtrack I've ever heard.
To all listening - Listen to Steve Reich’s ‘Music for 18 Musicians’, Reich is a big influence on the SimCity soundtracks
Yesss. I noted this too

This song really speaks to me..its kinda saying "dont worry, everything's gonna be ok."

Reminds me of the game Civilization and its music
I sometimes come here to read this comment again. It gives so much meaning to this track!
Always loved this track. I like your existential perspective on the music.
There was something perfect when music composition met game design during this era. I wonder where the artistry went.
Jerry Martin is a musical genius!
Goosebumps every time just fading away, . Soo strong intro, so many memories..... Past games owns nowadays in music and themes

This is perfect
Excellent analogy
“By The Bay” vibes listening to this.
For me this song always comes on when I'm in a new phase of life
To the future......life is so short. Live every minute, and cherish those you meet.
And don't waste it on cynicism either, There's a little bit of good in everything!
the start of this song reminds me of some of the SimCity 4 music
at 2:45 those are totally just the background violin's on bittersweet symphony
After 20 years, I just now made that connection, without naming the song it reminded me of -- then I saw your comment 10 seconds later.
I just listened it today after a long time and for the first time realized the obvious nod to the melody from Bittersweet Symphony from 2:28 ! Hah! What a nice touch.
Just noticed that as well. Sure took me a long time. Very good touch
Huh, I thought it was an obscured reworking of the SIM Broadway motif.
I've never played this game, but this song makes me want to.
It's also in the DS version.
I forgot to add, it starts off with nothing but piano playing kind of the simcity 3000 tune, then it gets real intense
The song "Floating Population" in particular for me.
Listening every day to this soundtrack.
this was on Simcity DS too!
I just realized this song uses Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve and I've become a different person because of this revelation. I love this song so much!
This sound track seems similar to sc4s terrain track too.
2:27 GOOSEBUMPS AF
Fright night meets Thief and Risky Business(Tangerine dream)
Thanks a lot for uploading the songs. Keep it online!!
I always though this track had a sort of BladeRunner vibe with it
I thought exactly the same thing
This sounds like one of the tracks from Sim City 4.
Reminds me of seeing sunshine on a rainy day.
some parts remind me of the soundtrack from the movie 'the straight story'
Beautiful film!
Llama Tip Screen ....Click
do you know the name of the very first song you hear as soon as you start your new terrain? I've been searching for it for a long time
it's called "Broadway"
Pure magic! Love this soundtrack!
Sounds like a news bulletin
It is Broadway.
This has to be the best song, right?
Sim Broadway in the normal version. Idk what in Unlimited.

If they could make this game for the Commodore Plus 4.
What meter is this? Like 5/4?
+GerbenGroeneveld 5/4 sounds right.
5 4 exactly
Anyone know the url for this song? It was my favorite when I used to play and I want to add it to a webpage I'm designing.
well it reminds me of simcity 3000....
This is a tricky song to cover but it's worth trying
