- Part 2! Classic Game Room buys a broken Neo-Geo MVS 4 slot arcade machine with a RAM error and tries to fix it! Disaster is surely to follow as mark cleans and then opens up the Neo-Geo to remove the MVS board. It's dusty! So.... what now? Will Mark replace the ram, the battery, or start crying and play Dreamcast?
Classic Game Room. The only youtube videos I consistently watch in full screen.
in the country where I live, there are still some PCs running old arcade games with real arcade controllers. Not a true MVS, still you can play from KOF 97 to XIII, Street Fighter II to Super Street Fighter IV and Tekken 4. there used to be also real pinball machines such as star wars and medieval madness. There are also original machines from SF Rush, Dead Heat, Cruisn' series and Time Crisis. I love it.
Neo Geo mvs it was really good, congrats!!. Saludos desde México.
Good luck mark.looking forward to seeing you reviewing and having a blast with your mvs.
Careful with the vacuum, they produce some serious static which can fry that beautiful neo geo hardware underneath if it's not protected. Great video as always!
Sweet! I was hoping you would have more videos about your experience with the restoration of the Neo Geo! good stuff. Can't wait to see it working :)
Mark make it come back to life by pure epicness (basically make it watch your reviews)
Neo-Geo MVS: An Arcade Machine... an Arcade Machine barely alive, Gentlemen, we can rebuild it, we have the technology. We have the capabilities to make the worlds first CGR Neo-Geo Arcade Machine. Mark can do it, to make CGR better than it was before. Better, stronger, faster, and Lord Carnage approved.
I find it pretty funny that Mark says he isn't very handy, to me he looks like the handiest guy ever.
There looks like there may be a couple of bad caps there needing replaced but overall the board looks quite good!
Find and check the solder joints on the ram chips. You probably won't have to replace the chips themselves, its probably a dry solder joint causing the problem. With heat they can crack over time.
Re-solder any bad joints, replace the bad caps and you may get it to boot.
A good clean of the board with isopropyl alcohol will make it easier to spot any defects.
Neo Drift Out, probably my favorite Neo Geo game next to the standard favorites, KOF and Metal Slug!
My favorite video game reviewer ! I hope one day he returns from Planet X .
Only Mark could make a video about cleaning an old piece of plastic and metal interesting.
"I forgot to bring a vacuum with me today"
I thought the intergalactic space arcade was just your garage or something, you're telling me it's actually in space?
InstaBlaster.
Totally agree.
Video games, pizza, and/or beer is always good.
Its cool to think over 77,000 games were started on that machine. Bet its seen some good times :)
That looks pretty awesome. The ultimate Neo Geo machine!
You sir, deserve a medal.
The battery definitely looks corroded, so replace that first. You can use electrical contact cleaner to clean the battery contacts. You can also try cleaning the data pins and the cartridge connectors using 99 percent alcohol and cotton swabs. You can also try using an electric duster to clean out the dust (don't use canned air because it can and will ignite when its fumes hit something hot or charged). That's pretty much all I can think of for now that may have something to do with the RAM.
Doesn't matter if you succeed or fail--I'm entertained. But to be clear, I hope you succeed! Looks like you'll have to replace that corroded battery at the least, which will require soldering. It's a tricky skill, but once you get good at it, it can be quite useful!
Good luck and may the force be with you!
Lol mark we love your vids doesn't matter if you record yourself taking a dump it would be interresting haha
That is why the internet is born. The world is no longer too far away. So asking Luke is actually possible.
I have never dealt with him personally, but Luke seems like a great guy. Unfortunately, last I knew he lives in Japan and shipping to/from Japan for a 4-slot Neo Geo is exremely expensive - probably more than the board is worth.
Great work Mark, keep it up
The first thing to do is clear the backup RAM. (Believe it or not, corrupt backup RAM can cause all kinds of problems that mimic serious hardware issues, and all sorts of bizarre stuff in-general.) This can be done by powering up the unit with A,B,C held down... It may also happens when you flip all the hardware dipswitches on and it does a 'WORK RAM TEST'.
Awesome!! I wish I knew more about how to do this electronics stuff!
Neo-Geo...classic I never had a chance to own one, but they had some great shooters and who could forget the memory card slot first and last ever, but I would like to see a Turbo Graphic 16 some day or a 3DO. Nice find though.
Send it to Luke Morse.
Seriously Mark, you, Luke Morse and Steve Benway should all have lunch together.
Such an interesting system! :D Eager for part 3 :DD
Ah, the Neo Geo. It's all that and a board of chips!
Make sure that you checked all the buttons and both joysticks that they wroked. I've been dealing this stuff alot for the past 8 years. Also, make sure you got very good picture on the monitor too.
Nice! I've always wanted one of these if I just had the room!
1. Clear everything out of the system, save for the display and controls.
2. Get a Neo Geo AES console.
3. Plug in the display and controls to the system.
4. Close everything up and plug it all in.
5. Enjoy
I own 3 neo geo arcade cabinets. For me, the best solution is to just buy a new 4 slot motherboard. It will cost you around $150 or less depending on where you find it. Dont pay more than $150.00, though. The mother board is a two set piece. Either the bottom board went bad or the top one.
You can clearly see the battery has eroded the arm that holds it, i dread to see what its like underneath, as i said last time will just be a lick of vinegar to clear the erosion up, then maybe some track-work if any of the lines are badly damaged
Wow that is awesome, I wish it was mine..minus the whole error thing...
we're with you mark!
If that counter was for the number of quarters inserted, then that machine made $19,265.75 during its lifetime. Amazing.
Damn i bet those expensive logitech remotes have better processing power nowadays, but damn nothing like old arcade cabnets
Hope you get it working, nothing beats playing classic SNK Arcade fighting games on a SNK Arcade machine.
James Rolfe (AVGN) has a good friend who's good at fixing stuff. The one who made the Nintoaster. Maybe he can help you with the ram replacement.
Sending a 4 slot to Japan would be costly, there are a lot of people in the US capable of fixing the 4 slot. Shipping it in the US alone costs $30 each way. Both ways to Japan would cost as much as 2 mobos.
I so wanted to learn to build stuff and i would love to build a mini neo geo bar machine.
Wow. I always wondered what the inside of those looked like.
Man, I clean my case every month! It's not too dusty after that 4-5 weeks, but I just want to keep it clean :p
thanx for showing us this Mark some idiot said why ask us just google it but they forget CGR is a community as well as a youtube channel
So, you can put your own cartridges in it? SWEET!!!!
yeah crts are dangerous, but while i always hear of the static thing, i never saw a actual piece of hardware that cease functioning because of that
and the vacuum, well unfortunately does not even work the way dust gets in electronics does not really get sucked by vacuum, however getting it to blow does work and i been doing that for the last 10 years without ever burning a single piece of hardware(and i do it a lot, there is a tree near that constantly releases some annoying fibers everywhere)
I love this adventure
Did he seriously just reference E.G.G. for the Dreamcast?! That was one of the first games I ever had on my Dreamcast
fixing the ram error by ramming a dodge ram into it lol your epics mark
Okay, sorry for the delay (I had to find an MV-4F I had lying around). Work RAM error at address 0010140A with write AAAA and read AA8A is a problem with the low byte Work RAM IC. It is the one located at C8 on the lower board. On my MV-4F it is a Sony CXK58257AM-12L. Replace that one. It can be done with a soldering iron but be careful not to damage the SMD pads (heat gun is best). If you are lucky everything will work fine after that. If you are unlucky you may get another (different) error.
Yes, that is a bad RAM IC as well - one of the 6 SMD ones. If you tell me what model NEO GEO MVS you have I might be able to tell you which one is bad. They frequently die in pairs, so you may need to replace two of them, but you won't know until you replace the one that is causing the error.
Most probably RAM indeed, it even gives you the address, so it's just a matter of finding the IC in which that address is contained and replace it.
Fix a RAM error by driving a Dodge RAM into it? That is hysterical!
Congratulations!
its too blurry to tell for sure, but you may have a swollen capacitor on the main board on the third closest to the bottom on the left, its actually directly to the right on the second chip from the bottom. It looks like it may be leaking acid, if so that area of the board wont be regulating power properly.
The RAM error should tell you the exact location of the bad ram chip. Carefully remove the RAM chip from that location (hopefully it's socketed otherwise its desoldering time!). On my Galaga machine I had a RAM error occur and guess what I found underneath the RAM at that location? ... a dead bug!
I lost it at "family of raccoons".
was never a neo geo fan i always wanted a super sprint arcade machine,u can get 1 for about 900 quid but there f-ing huge man.
i think mark should play some COSMIC CARNAGE!
Mike like I commented earlier there should four epson SRM2B256SLMX55 chips inside the machine.you should replace the top right one you'll need to de-solder it and solder a new one .(but read about it first :) )
This is so badass.
So that's what the inside of an arcade machine looks like. :T It's more empty them i imagined.
I just watched a guy cleaning a arcade cabinet and opening it and i enjoyed it :D
Is it just me or is it funnier that he bleeps when he swears?
MVS is my fav arcade machine :D so kewl
I'm serious about collecting games, but in this case, where each cartridge could easily run you 200-500 on top of all of the hardware errors, fucking MAME.
Props to being prepared to shank something...
The chances of him discharging an lethal current to the board is pretty slim mind.
:,D OH MARK YOURE SO LUCKY TwT I WISH I COULD HAVE MY OWN I LOVE THE NEO GEO MVS ARCADE I LOVE IT LOOOOOOOOOVE IT ITS A TRUE LEGEND AMONGS ARCADE MACHINES :,3 *HUGS*
it would be a great idea to send the board to lukemorse, if it is fixable he will find a way!!!!!!
OOOHHHH!!! YEAAAAAHHHHH!!!
Could turn into a MAME cab if the MVS doesnt go right. Have a custom CGR Hyperspin skin and everything.
you can use a vacuum cleaner if you want, i've never had a problem
also you don't need no anti static wrist band...
Better off just buying a new board :) nice cab btw!!!
For serious though, be careful. If there's someone in the area who's willing to fix it and they know what they are doing, let them.
Also check klov.com, which is a huge arcade database and there's a forum full of people who can and are willing to help.
The insides look pretty
Is the counter for quarters? If so, that machine made almost 20,000 USD !!!!! Impressive.
Elemental gimmick gear is an amazing game
i want a working neo-geo just for metal slug, and i also want to own a pizzeria. pizza+metal slug=awesome
it's so simple, hire a arcade wizard. he will fix the machine and eat the racoons.
I say gut it, keep the cabinet and make your own MAME set-up with an old Windows XP machine.
Call about a ram, the battery works to show a error message.
I have a 4-slot, the MV-4F I believe. The manual has info on both 2 and 4-slotters. I had read that those chips tend to be the solution, but the store I ordered from only had one left. Do you know anywhere else I could get one?
Based on the address 00D0180C I doubt it is a problem with any of the traces. If it were a problem with any of the traces or anything other than the RAM chips themselves then the address of the error would most likely be an "even" number like 00D00000. I think replacing the backup RAM chips would fix the problem. I have a 4 slot myself and I am pretty sure the backup RAM chips are the ones at locations F9 and D9 on the lower board (I can post a picture if you want).
Yup, asking Luke is the way to go!
I watch them full screen on my 40" TV. I have to each show justice. :D
lol at rare footage of Mark using a tool
Oh god, please a dust mask! you're gonna get sick!
hoping in next video that he got help and its working so he can show it working fine and play game : )
He will start sobbing, and play Dreamcast!
yeah arcade life love it
We all need more CGR… EDF EDF EDF…
the cartridge but you can convert you aes to also play mvs games as well but beware aes games are much more expensive than the mvs counterpart. if you like the king of fighters and samurai shodown it is much cheaper to buy them on the virtual console or psn. the virtual console also has the last blade as well.
i beleive it registers how many times the system has been played
You can do it! All hail SNK
Never vacuum electronics, there can be static discharge and damage components.
LMAO'ed at the 'Shank it' comment
Just get a working replacement for the 4-slot board, easiest solution - danger of burning your house down is next to zero.
