      Oh Yeah, M.I.A is a true genius. The problem is how US treated her after the Super Bowl with Madonna. She had so much backlashes and been accused of 'terrorism'. She released a documentary and she explained all of that, it's super interesting ;)

      But none of those songs were big like Boom Clap.
      What I'm saying is that if you go to the average person, they still only know her for those handful of massive hits she had in the early 2010s. Fancy has 1 billion views on YT, Boom Clap has 400 million. Boys has 130 million, and 1999 has 40 million. They're great songs, but they're not nearly as successful as those other hits.
      And yes, she writes hits for other artists, but my point is that most people don't know that she wrote those songs. They just associate them with Camila Cabello and Selena Gomez.
      My whole point was that while maybe people like us listen to Charli's new stuff, most people still only know her for those couple of megahits she had a few years ago. Very much like Carly Rae Jepsen. Those who pay attention know that last few albums are incredible, but to the vast majority of people, she will always only be the Call me Maybe girl.
      It's sad, but it's true.

    • @ponykelly
      @ponykelly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I feel like Charli simply enjoys staying amongts her fanbase. I saw her in concert in France last year, she played in a small venue and I think it might have been on purpose. I felt like she truly enjoyed being in contact with her audience, she invited local drag queens on stage, something that maybe could have not happened if it was a bigger venue. She's rich enough and talented enough to make whatever she wants with her career but I truly believe she has an important value of staying true to herself and her music. I'm only speculating here but I genuinely feel like it's the truth

      Arca was probably an oversight, though you could make the argument that her influence has been seen more in the experimental electronic music and IDM side of things than in the pop side of things (though you can certainly hear her in artists from NUXXE). Even when you look at FKA twigs and Kelela, two examples of big artists that Arca helped develop, she brought her weirdness to their takes on R&B and Neo-soul, instead of any sort of of "conventional" pop that usually underlies hyperpop. To your other point, the first draft of the script had like three quarters of a page committed to SOPHIE alone lmao, ultimately had to cut most of it out. Leaned in more on PC Music as a whole.

      Charli’s an incredible songwriter though. Genius level. On top of that she’s a visionary and a world-builder, and she’s not playing the part for a major label. I’d say that her vision as well as her massive talent and influence is definitely, hugely important and valid here. What she brought/brings to the table is crucial to the success of ’Hyperpop’ and it’s system of creators.

    I'd say it's relatively ignorant to act like Charli is the "inventor" of hyperpop, but it's also reductionist to act like she has had no impact, I think the world of music is too interconnected to draw exactly 1 starting point. Laura Les and Dylan Brady have been producing hyperpop adjacent material for years, Hannah Diamond has been dropping singles that are definitely hyperpop since 2013, and Dorian Electra and SOPHIE have been making and producing genderbending and genre shattering music for a while now. Exactly, this title still bothers me, since she just lended her voice but was not rly part of the production - and tbh when charli started riding the hyperpop wave it didn't feel so authentic anymore

    Hyperpop is my absolute favorite genre. Its hardcore music for the gays and I absolutely love that we have it

      we have to agree also that not all hyperpop songs are good, some really exagerate and make terrible songs & use "experimenting" as an excuse, im sorry but its the truth, but ofc theres a lot of good songs out of it

      No, hardcore music for the gays is called industrial, gay men pioneered and helped the genre flourish since the late 70s, check your history

    I don't think charli created hyperpop, she's really only the face because she's the most visible out of all the artists that are within the hyperpop sphere.

    Saying Charli created it is pretty disingenuous. She popularized it.
    In fact, industry execs had been playing with the idea of a manufactured genre and were doing extensive research on up-and-coming artists who seemed to be doing similar sounds, which didn’t quite fit into a specific category; among them were Sophie, Hannah Diamond, Namasenda, Charli, AG Cook, and others. In a way, hyperpop was actually a big marketing strategy to create a scene and a genre. The industry saw a trend and capitalized on it.

    What r u talking about? I love Charli but GWEN STEFANI's created Hyperpop since 2003 with LAMB. Actually Charli XCX loves Gwen and sees her as one of her idols and inspirations & wants to work w her again.
