Consequently, everyone was asked to turn on their lights, get out in the backyard with torches, whatever they could do to make it a very brightly lit night on the dark west coast. So when John Glenn passed overhead, the sea and surrounding country were pitch dark, but Perth stood out like a beacon on the coast. John Glenn mentioned it several times from space and again when he visited Perth. Also, I think there are other candidates for most isolated city, but Perth is definitely the most isolated state capital anywhere in the world and the most isolated city of its size.
