  • It is time to modify any free flight airplane into an RC airplane, you can buy this gliders for cheap on any hobby store or online at hobbyking, amazon, eBay, etc. and then use micro servos and some electronics to make turn it into a radio controlled glider. This one is a multiplex mini solius wich is perfect for this project.
servos: Turnigy™ TGY-TS531A Analog Nano Servo
    Batery: Turnigy Nano-Tech 600mah 1S 35~70C Lipo but I reconmend a Turnigy nano-tech 130mah 4g
Receiver: FrSky V8R7-II 2.4G 7CH High Voltage Receiver

Nice done, but it seems to be too heavy to glide well ... , maybe the Lidl Glider would do ... :-)

For the return spring on your elevator, there's a really clever design I learned from DLG building. You make a Z shaped torsion spring, with just 90 degree bends, and it's placed in between the two surfaces hidden in the pivot space. Each end gets fed into a thin reinforcing tube glued within the body of the wing and control. It will be totally hidden when installed and you can vary the strength of return by using a longer middle length for softer feel, or thinner gauge steel. Make sure you use some tubes to keep the wire from tearing through the surface.

I learned to fly with such a converted foam glider. Even did some slope soaring with it.

Glider is Multiplex Mini Solius, vs 650 mm. I have one and will modify it with RC and also a small, electric motor w/ folding propeller. This glider glides really well!

Great instructional video and nice little glider. When you had the issue with the horizontal stabiliser another solution came to mind. Thought you could add a second servo horn on the starboard side elevator. Then attach to your existing control line in a “Y”fashion. Thus equalising the pull on both sides and stabilising the stabiliser. Would save a tiny, very tiny, amount of weight too. Thanks for taking the time to construct this glider and video, edit and post. It's given me some ideas. Thank you.

Hello I have a KEIL KRAFT SOARER BABY 36" ( 910 mm ) span Towline Glider . Would it be practical to convert this free flight glider to RC . My transmitter is a JR PROPO X-3810 on the back of transmitter is an FR SKY V8JT RF module . The on board reciever is a FR SKY V8FR 8 channel. What servos and battery pack should I get for on board my plane , and is this a practical project.

I just purchased a glider very similar to this...with THE SAME ideas in mind: make it R/C. Your documentation and choice of materials/design approach helps me a lot.
I was thinking of carefully routing a nylon or poly tube through the vertical tail and out the top--to run my control lines thru, versus external routing like yours. That way I'd avoid snags or uneven tension to one side while using only 1 line, like your original plan.
I'm also interested in 'glassing' the wing & fuselage for added toughness/stiffness. I might use 0.25 oz. cloth or just Tyvek & brown paper...whatever is simpler.
It would be great to buy a bunch of these bulk price...then teach kids to build them w/R/C added.

Looks awesome, I have a similar chick glider (diamond 600) and I'm wondering if it might be worth just having rudder and elevator for slope soaring. I've found that the gliders have a tendancy to pick up a lot of speed and break off the nose and tail in free flight, not sure if it would be an issue under RC though, I was thinking about putting in a carbon rod or two.
Your build looks really good and to be fair it flew pretty well just as a discus launch- much better than as a chuck glider!

Hi, I used the Frsky taranis X9d radio and the receiver FrSky VD5M but those are a bit expensive because they are pro and you can use them for other models, but you can get the Flysky i6 a search for a micro 4 ch receiver for it.
