    The wolf could had easily killed him as a lamb from the start (after the mother's death). But instead, he trained him until the end. The ending makes it heartbreaking.

      I think it was because the wolf, for all his dark and predatory nature, wanted someone to understand him before he died. Time will eat away even the strongest warrior. Whether Chirin followed in his steps or not, the wolf would die knowing at least some form of acceptance by another, even if it was only grudging respect.

    The ending to this was quite compelling and frustrating. Chirin was refused entry to the barn by the rest o this flock simply because of his appearance.

      In becoming what he needed to be to slay the beast, Chirin became the beast himself. The rejection by his flock is a symbol of his removal from society and loss of humanity (for lack of a better term)

      i am wondering if the story was based on a folktale, because i can see the story as much being about a farmer child going under a bandit. he became a bandit effectively, it makes sense that they would fear him. It was a very dark movie, but it was a good one.

      ayooo Lol no, the original symbolism behind the movie is that Chirin was so determined to get his revenge that he changed everything he was and ended up losing everything that ever mattered to him as a result.

    the philosophical decissions chirin made were very strange on one hand he had to become the hunter to survive but on the other it left him isolated. would it have been better to grow up weak and fearful and be killed in a future attack or become a monster to live but live alone being seen as a monster. chirin became something his mother would of never wanted to evenge her.

      Japanese films tend to be intended to spark discussion, not give a prepackaged answer. ultimately there is no right or wrong answer, every life choice leads to compromises, you in some way. too kind and you become a victim, too harsh and you become a monster, there aren't easy answers.

He never talked about his service and spent the rest of his life creating entertainment for children, including Anpanman.

    I hate the backlash this movie gets. It’s a pretty nice film and the ending is pretty sad. My only real criticism is that the animation on the character movement isn’t that great. I get that this is old but was it really that hard to move the mouths? XD then again, the wolf not moving his mouth makes him creepier in my opinion.

      Crispy Butter Balls Not moving the wolf’s mouth and adult Chirin’s mouth was intentional. That plus the reverb was to make them look as inhuman as possible.

    Apparently a lot of people complain about this movie when the point of it isn't supposed to be a feel-good film it's a morality tale about how people can change in this case for the worse but if they can change for the worse they can also change for the better

      Jake Rutigliano Pretty much, since Annakin and Chirin have a similar path of becoming the darkness and a mother's death. Too bad a 40 minute fable about a lamb and a wolf would still be too complex for Lucas to understand how to write a sympathetic terrifying villain.

    I saw this anime when I was very young. I've been searching for it for years. My brother recently gave me Unico for christmas (another that I would watch over and over). It is one of the few things I can remember from being a naive 3 year old. These little animes have gotten into my subconscious and I am so happy to now know* what* they are called! The titles have eluded me for far too long. : D

    You have to wonder about the Wolf's motivation in all of this?! Was he looking at Chirin because he saw Abit of himself in him, or did he raise the lamb because he got tired of killing weak Sheep?
    Did he want fight a challenger worthy of him, or did he do this just he could die in a way befitting of his title?!

      When you're a predator whose purpose in life is to play out your role for the rest of your days (in the Wolf's case; hunting and eating lamb), wouldn't _you_ be tired of it?

    This is a movie that could do well with a modern remake. It could be dark, gritty, and end just as painfully, but without the crappy music, horrible voice-work, and dated animation.

    What the English dub has going for it is a great narrator - sounds halfway between George Takei and Stacy Keach - and the exact kinda voice I hoped Chirin would have as an adult.

    I like woe some people don’t but I see him as a realistic portrayal of an 🐺 if it had human qualities he doesn’t kill just to kill he kills because that’s what he needs to do to survive he only takes what he needs and goes when he sees Chirin while he easily could just kill him he respectfully tells chirin to go home while he may sound stern he’s right and 1:52 he’s only as strict as he needs to be and shows lenience when the situation calls for it this wolf deserves a lot of respect
