  • Ontario's minimum wage goes up today to the second-highest rate in the country. But as Caryn Ceolin reports, it's still a lot lower than what's needed to pay the bills.

I know people making $50 an hour and are still broke. Why? Because they spend like they make $100 an hour. So people need to be smart with there money

honestly.. you can raise it $100 / hour it won't make a difference. prices will go up the same and minimum wage will still not be enough. This is just creating an inflationary spiral that is making everything even more expensive. Why? because all our minimum wage workers work in industries such as grocery stores, retail stores or movie theatres. The main cost of operation in those industries is labour and as labour cost goes up so will prices for everyone that purchases from those stores. Thus perpetuating this. Only people that benefit from this is government as they collect higher income taxes, and CPP, EI.

Minimum wage workers don’t pay income tax if they file their taxes on time. They are likely eligible for enough tax deductions, credits and benefits that exceed the value of any tax that was deducted from their paycheques.

Yeahh , but those who make min should pay zero taxes since we pay taxes on every purchase !

$15 after taxes. You will need to work 60-70 hours a week. But the economy wouldn't be able to support min wage workers getting a real proper liveable wage. yay capitalism.

Obviously not this doesn’t do anything you literally need double that to afford a studio apartment. Groceries are at least a 100$ a week. Do they need to calculate anything?

Why raise min wage ,how about lower taxes ,it would work better for the economy. Imagine how many are going to be layed off because of the wage increase 🤔

Minimum wage was never meant to live off of. This is why I worked hard and moved up.

Maybe but when they raise prices before adjusting min wage and then again after it doesnt change much really except that stuff still costs more than it did ...3 years ago a bag of no name cat food was 14 maybe 15 bucks....now is between 22 and 24 dollars...and thats just cat food ...go look at food prices in general or rent and how its almost doubled too....were in a great spot, thank god for debit cards right bc imagine once it climbs more how you will need to fill a backpack with cash so you can pay at checkout for a few groceries ...not too far off now though when it can run about 70 dollars to fill a single grocery bag full of food

If you expect a place of your own and insist on buying coffee at Tim's every morning, no, you can't. If you expect to have a roommate and don't spend your money on luxuries, yes, you can. I'm basing this living in Edmonton, other cities change the story.
