Honestly giving season 4 this weird season long arc was maybe the weirdest thing to do for this series. Connected episodes and callback characters sure, but one season long running story of "WE BROKE" was just such a weird choice.
Honestly I think it could've landed better if the Freeman's were actually making progress. Like Grandad getting a TSA job and carrying that on for the rest of the season could've given more ammo for funny jokes and commentary as well as give more of a backbone to the overarching plot. I'd also frame some of the adventures in other episodes as attempts to side hustle. Like in Freedom Ride and Die (one of the few episodes I actually liked in this season) could have the setup of Grandad trying to make money off of retelling his past adventures on TV. Having them stay in the same place throughout most of the season made things uncomfortable to sit through especially since the comedy is much less funny and Grandad's bad decisions is the ONLY reasons why they are poor in the first place.
Them taking Aaron McGruder out was the downfall of this show. You can easily tell the writing is night and day and it's a huge disappointment to years long fans of the series. Hopefully they do what HBO was about to do which is renew the series. This season doesn't really get all that much better from here unfortunately...
The real downfall was trying to franchise the show when it wasn't ready. Season 4 if I remember right was supposed to be 20 episodes and Aaron McGruder and the other writers only got to 10 in 4 years before he was fired. And Carl Jones not being apart of the season had a sharp effect on production. Sony wanted something they could bank on and the rushing and taking what was in production before Aaron parted ways was the nail in the coffin. Hopefully they don't bring it back because this season is clear indication of that's going to turn out
@@Wolfpolitics So technically there's 4 good episodes left in this season. Episodes 5, 7, 8, and 9. So they should definitely continue reacting to these episodes.
My issue with this season compared to previous ones is that in this season it feels like we (black people and other minorities) are the punchline, while in older seasons society was the punchline.
Based on this and the Ruckus president/mayor episode, I think the issue is everything Ruckus said in those episodes could have been said by a white person. He's not a caricature anymore, he's just an insert for any racist character as something to bounce off of. Look, I'm obviously white, but I could tell before and can especially tell by Chris and Spideys' expressions that in past seasons Uncle Ruckus is saying shit that could possibly be said by a black person, but more importantly could never even be thought up by a white person. That's what made him at least a little bit pitiable. Before he was just crazy, now he's just old fashioned racist.
Finish the season. I want yall to watch the civil rights episode it was fun. Ruckus is a friend of the Freemanfamily despite being racist towards them. I will say that the other seasons had A and B stories. Maybe the shift in season 4 is the reason why Ruckus seems more unlikeable.
Guys, its not a 'train wreck'. No its not as good as the earlier seasons but its worth finishing if for no other reason than to see the break in quality.
Imma need y’all to come off the “too offensive” angle. They went farther in previous seasons, only it was at the expense of “ghetto” people and other brands of blackness.
@@danielantunez8355 okay I’ll lay this out one time on this thread, because I’ve gone more in depth on another comment. Yes, season 4 is the worst season. No, it’s not more offensive than any other season. At least, not to black people. If you can give me one example of a joke this season that is so egregious that it makes other jokes in other seasons look tame, I’ll come off this hill. No, what happened was season 4 started being more direct when insulting people besides black people. The Middle Eastern jokes on episode 2 I believe, brought their collective disdain to another level. If this was about offensive jokes, then they would have been done with the series. The step back in quality is an excuse for something they can’t put their finger on. They are acting like the show suddenly got more offensive, when, in actuality, the show is less offensive to back people, but is taking shots at everyone blatantly. The belly laughs on seasons 1-3 from Ruckus jokes or even Huey jokes is enough that they should “shhhh” and just watch.
@@dwilliams380 it's not that jokes are egregious, it's moreso that they don't really add to the story. I agree, they’re right about the story structure and theme of the episode but the dark humor is what’s keeping this entertaining. I think because it’s very offensive to the ladies on the couch is why they as a collective aren’t laughing as much. Dark humor is what brings the most laughs in my opinion. Also makes it worse that they are censoring some swear words, which makes these reactions a lot less fun to watch now….
The white woman was the worst character ever. Ruckus is just mean. Riley&Huey are just there. The jokes are 1-layer. 1st half was okay. 2nd half was just an awkward re-hash of the Kungfu Wolf-bitch that didn't say anything. That was about having a toxic circle. This....she was just a sad lady and......
