    This is by far, one of the best video tutorial I have ever watched - From the introduction, the music and the good mood of the presenter! Congrats Jeff! You really make TheRevitKid channel catching. I didn't have the fun to join you all live for episode 66, but here I am April/2022. This video has brought me tremendous insites and has definitely added to my search I've started 3 months ago trying to find out how Iphone 13 Lidar works!!! I want to also thank Polycam to let me download the app for free! amazing! Anyway, the focus of my search was to create some sort of site survey Webpage and help people with their files? by providing than "basically" what you have just taught us? is this an idea? Thank you so much, I am in Brazil and you have just helped me loads.
    God Bless,

      @@TheRevitKid like furniture makers needs a site surveyor right? To take dimensions e build the furniture to the customers. You would be surprised here how many “Professional cabinet maker” make designs mistakes that are only found out at the time of installation. Therefore providing them with the opportunity (having the iPhone in hands) send us the scans they make so we can do the so called “processing” of the files to be sent back to them and be at disposal of their designer.. what do you think? Even in a small scale I can do for example the “site survey my self” or an extra service you know? What do you think? Thanks

    This was a great video! I have had an Ipad Pro for several months now and have been playing around with a similar workflow for scanning a commercial building. I have found that the Ipad/Polycam are not very good at going through doors, around corners and such. So my workflow was to scan each room individually and then stitch the point clouds together in Revit. Fortunately we have an existing architecture dwg so I can place the rooms fairly accurately and trace that. This has been incredibly valuable as compared to verifying plans, RCP,s etc. with a tape measure. It is also much faster than a BLK 360 which takes 3-5 minutes for each scan location.

    • @TheRevitKid
      @TheRevitKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, as I mentioned in the video... when you turn corners or go to other rooms you need to be very careful. Making scans of each and combining them is a great approach!

    Good video taking us through this workflow Jeff. I use the Polycam app on my iPad Pro and experience the same usability & limitations you outline in our video. We use the Matterport Pro 2 and the Leica BLK360 in other, more applicable use cases. I fully agree with you that the LiDAR on the iPad & iPhone Pro's with Polycam app do in fact have a very valid use case. It works perfectly to deliver smaller projects accurately enough and still gain the much easier & shorter workflow from survey to as-built model & drawing set, compared to manual surveying.

    Not sure if this was mentioned before but you can use targets on the floors, walls etc to create better connections between room scans and alignment, similar to overlaps. You can use these targets to align your point clouds in Recap which can then give you different export options, etc. from Recap for larger projects.

    It’s range is less than 16’ if your holding it from head height… the LiDAR can go much further but the accuracy drops off so the points are deleted. One thing we need to keep in mind is good looking does not mean it’s accurate with SLAM.

    Now I have the following problems>
    1. I have made the capturing of our house, but I did them room by room. When I open them in Recap the model is tilted, after I imported it in Revit I could rotate it, but then I found out that it was not in scale with my Revit Model. What should I do in order to have the correct units?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,

    • @TheRevitKid
      @TheRevitKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can rotate it as long as you are in the correct orthogonal view (ie. South elevation). As for scale, I assume you did a photo capture and not LiDAR? That means you either need to scale the scan in polycam or in Revit.

  • @westcoastaerialimagery4690
    @westcoastaerialimagery4690 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The biggest improvement these app developers can implement is a scale bar function for large/long duration scans. I don't think its any stretch of the imagination that people will have a tape or laser disto with them to be able to place a fixed distance over a large wall to then scale the point cloud created. Having tested polycam and being disappointed prior to their 20th nov update about larger scans crashing while processing I switched to scaniverse which handles large scans but is not really that great for a point cloud production (v/low point count) but their meshes and textures are great for some context for draftsmen.
    I will try polycam again now that they have an update to address the crashing, fingers crossed it works as I like to use the point cloud to aid UAV photogrammetry around complex structures

    • @westcoastaerialimagery4690

      @@TheRevitKid I'm only scanning a wall though, less overall distance than a house or what you have shown in your video, nothing large scale, when they demonstrate it being able to do a building façade I expect to be able to replicate that but you can't, the app still crashes when trying to process it at any meaningful level of detail, it's a shame that they release the video scanning an entire abandoned gold mine and all the interior scans using the app but reality is the app isn't reliable
      I'd love for it to work as advertised and will keep checking in on it but their promo vids vs reality are chalk and cheese at the moment :(
