Apparently what he did for Plok was he used sound effect channels as well to play repeating segments, that's where all the triplets came in from. He like half-cheated by using non-music hardware. If you didn't know that was even possible then it would definitely sound like it's using way more channels than the SNES had. That's probably why Nintendo thought he was using a modified SNES.
@@Exarian Plok only uses 5 of the SNES's 8 channels. The remaining 3 are for sound effects. The only exception is the title theme which uses all 8 channels.
the best kept secret is you can get really close to experiencing something for the first time again, you just have to share it with someone who's really expressive.
Geoff Follin deserves as much recognition as Tim does. The Follin brothers were absolutely untouchable at the time. They took those chips to their max potential and made actual songs, not just loops.
Sad he never got to hear Akrillic, pretty much the epitome of all the Prog Rock inspirations that Plok's sound track sprinkled all over. Follin Bros went all in on their Soundtracks and nice to see that NL dug it so much.
There were a few games where the composers did a good number on it. Follin just took his blowtorch and fking BURNED his tracks onto it. Plok was showcased to Miyamoto and he thought the music was that good, he looked around the room for other speakers. Also Plok once started as a short comic resolving around a mage who grew tired of his work and made himself a red-hooded familliar to help him: Plok was born
Man I am almost thirty years old and I remember playing PLOK on my cousins snes when I was 8. This was the first time I had heard the Boss theme and Beach theme since then - DAMN BRO!!!! I was reacting too. Legendary
Tim Follin is a god. Consider yourselves blessed when you hear pretty much anything he did. This is a man who got five-channel sound out of a 1-bit piezo beeper speaker. Simply magical.
The best VG composer the industry ever had. The boss theme can only be compared to giants like Dancing Mad and Giygas' battle theme. Also, this guy is the arranger of Rock N Roll Racing. He's the reason why the music of that game sounds that good. Were it was given to anybody else, it'll sound worse. He's also one of the guy that inspires David Wise and Jake Kaufman on making music. There are so many great composers from the C64 eras. It's such a massive shame that most of them are no longer working in the industry or are just given works on game few people played.
and to think that for most of it not only was he in his teens or early 20s, but it wasn't even his main passion! he was a programmer first and composer second.
The game fits the music! The sound effects such as enemies dying blends beautifully with music, not to mention all the temporary upgrades have their own songs + the bonus level song Edit (Theme song is honestly such a good jam)
I saw htis video at like 1AM AND I was listening to Solstice for the first time... SO the drop from Solstice made me audibly go WUHHH. Man this stuffs good
What a fuckin time capsule. This was right about when I first got into NL too. Coming in as a VODfrog then just hearing this and watching the chat react was an insane experience. I can only imagine being there live lmao
Plok is an amazing game though! First time ever encountering a boss with THAT music starting had me scared absolutely shitless as a kid. I certainly couldn't comprehend how insanely ahead of the time it was, but my GOD did it do exactly what it was designed for and weirdly enough it fits the game in a sense of "opposites attract each other". It's so out of the box that it creates it's own new box in where it fits perfectly. Granted nostalgia is speaking a lot here, but thinking back, this is exactly how it blew my mind as a kid.
A lot of the music reminds me of very early Genesis music, such as The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album... Yes, theee Genesis (Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel era)
Miyamoto called it the 3rd best platformer after Mario and Sonic. For the time it was great, large amount of levels, an actual plot, an amazing soundtrack (best on the SNES) and it just got unlucky in not getting a sequel.
This guy is the epitome of shut up and let the song cook then comment. And I'm not forgiven this guy for not letting the solstice intro song get all the way to the crazy parts. Like the guy only heard the beginning parts and was like oh this is pretty novel but it's nothing like this it's like you didn't let the song cook dude You got too much ADHD You need to calm down.

The Plok ost is seriously one of the SNES’s best
Definitely!
I once had a debate with my brother about what the best SNES soundtrack was. I said Plok and he said Donkey Kong Country.
@@malte1984 both excellent choices
@@malte1984 Hey man, you can't discount David Wise. That guy is a wizard in his own way.

No you cant
Tim follin can
but not you or anyone else
The weakest Dancing Mad enthusiast vs the strongest Plok Boss theme enjoyer
but I love both, I don't want to choose
I didn't like dancing mad >:(
Weird to compare when both osts are basically pushing the limits of the SNES to their very limits.
Love both too.

Plus, Tim Follin (the composer) got screwed over by a large amount of these companies, resulting in him retiring early, which sucks.

The entire OST is utter genius.
Tim's music is pure sound shower. It takes you to another plane of existence.
