Here we are with the Beginners Guide to Tekken 8! Lots of Newcomers coming in for the latest Tekken and honestly... the game does not do a great job teaching you a lot of the gameplay systems but thankfully that's what this video is here for! Lets cover everything from the basics to concepts like how to get up off the ground properly and more. Leave a like if it helped out, and otherwise enjoy!
Rooflemonger, lots of folks have been saying you need a arcade fight stick to really be able to do everything in Tekken. Lots of people are saying that a controller just does not really cut it for this game. I for instance have trouble with the diagonal inputs sometimes and have no idea how you are supposed to hit X + B or Z+Y simultaneously on a controller. What's your opinion on this, and do you have any recomendatins on a good starter stick for an old head with no illusions about being great at or going pro rofl?
@@jrodgers674 you dont need any controller other than the one you want to use. The game allows for macros of every button combination so start biinding those shoulder buttons
Good job man, you've been able to grind through every fighting game released in the past 7 months and give concise tools for beginners to jump in to things mere hours/days after each launch. 🍾🥂
As a 35 year old dad with a job that has some maintenance windows at odd hours etc, I enjoy Roofs content. Very helpful to get in and play for FUN. Not trying to become a pro, but just be rather competitive and have a blast!
Beginner guide as promised! Next video we will be going over all the funky movement in Tekken, wave dash canceling, korean backdashing, crab canceling(as seen on twitter) and all that fancy stuff! After that.. I dunno? lol maybe finally character videos?
Character videos if you’re able! I subbed back in mk1 because those character videos really helped me get good on my favorite characters. Tekken seems harder to pick up..
Great video! Please do a video on best controller layout for dualsense. I am kind of confused on what’s the best configuration for easily inputting 2+3 moves without claw gripping the controller.
tekken 8 is gonna be the first fighting game i truly get into, ive played alot of them but just could not get into them at all but tekken has completely grabbed my interest and kazuya is definitely my favorite. i heard hes a more advanced character but im willing to learn him
I've been learning Kazuya and God damn the process is making me feel dumb. For a character that can shoot lasers out of his forehead he's really restrained and has to work for his shit
I’ve watched you for years and lately have taken a few months break from fighting games… I’m returning and deep diving on all the content I missed, you’re the best at what you do !
Hey man, as this is my first ever tekken game, your recent videos have been insanely helpful for me getting into the game. Thank you so much for providing us with these videos.

As a person who is new to fighting games, at first, I was going to look into MK1, but Tekken 8 caught my attention and looked fun to me. This guide will be of help to me.

I haven't played tekken in so long I'm getting back into it now. I just want to say a massive thank you for these guides I know you put lots of time in but for any new fighting game I always appreciate the work you put in to help new and returning players. The effort is noticed and appreciated dude.
U did not sugarcoat that thumbnail huh. Thank you Rooflemonger for your service once again, the FGC wouldn't be the same without you or all these super informative videos.
Rooflemonger, you are a very good FGC teacher/FGC tutorialist. You are like the CHRIS HERO of the FGC. The biggest weakness in my tekken gameplay is & has always been side stepping my opponent's attacks. I just can't not consistently do that because it's really difficult in general. Being able to side step your opponent attacks in the heat of battle or consistently is an advanced skill that takes some time to get the hang of. Nobody SUCK ASS at side stepping in tekken more than I do 😄
to be honest, even though its better in tekken 8, sidstepping is just bad in tekken in general, always has been. Its never been smooth or intuitive like Virtua Fighter and I always kinda hated that about it. Its really just a feel thing and you gotta take the licks until you figure out what works
Man you taught me how to play mk1 really well. I got tekken 8 because the current state of mk1 but want a fighting game to play. I know this is the hardest but im ready to learn, i was praying you had this video up
Played for a few days now, only played smash bros before. Starting to realize what works well for me right now is to try to win by doing as little as possible. I remind myself every button press has to have a purpose so I don't start mashing and moving around randomly. So I first mostly stay completely still and I do neutral blocks, only holding back or duck if I get too abused. Once I get a block in I try to punish and keep them in the air/on the ground as long as possible, then go back to defending. Probably obvious stuff but it didn't come naturally lol. I was pretty happy to beat a few VS matches on the higher AI modes today by doing this.
Holy Jesus dude you just put out a 3 hours video yesterday 💀 this is why you are the GOAT 🐐🐐🐐 I need all of the Rooflemonger Tekken 8 content. We appreciate all the work you're putting into this game these first few days
Thanks rooflemonger. The lack of in game tutorials has made jumping on ranked a pretty frustrating experience to say the least so this helped out a lot!
Fantastic guide. I consider myself about intermediate in Tekken 8 and even I didn't know I could cancel the 2+3 attack with back, back until I watched this video. Super helpful.
i'm new to tekken and fighting games in general. i have 40 hours on tekken 8 and didn't really know what was happening until i watched this video. i want to learn how the game works and get better, thank you so much for this resource!!!

I'm no beginner in Tekken, but with all the new heat stuff, I gotta watch this video to keep me up to date. Thank you for taking the time to create these tutorials, Roof. Keep doing your thing. Peace.
Man, you are the best teacher out there. You've taught me Street Fighter 6, my first fighting game ever, and now Tekken 8 which I've just bought. I cannot thank you enough 😊 Your voice and style are also very entertaining.
I was like why does this guy sound so familiar, and then I realized you’re the guy I learned to play GGS from, so thanks for the help on the new game LOL
Sometimes I hate that TH-cam listens to me and other times it brings me amazing stuff like this. I'm new to the Tekken series, been playing since 7 and still don't quite have a great grip on the game so I'm gonna study this video
This video is awesome. I have a friend that’s played Tekken for years and they’re teaching me how to play. They taught me everything you just said. I highly recommend trying to find experienced players to spar with you sometime. I just picked Tekken 8 up and as a beginner I feel so strong. I can’t wait to improve.
Learning from a vet Tekken player will help improve your skills immensely. I trained up my neighbor & his roommate. They thought they were good. They were not lol. They are much much much better players now. You can learn a ton of little things that are actually a big deal.
Appreciate the guides! Just got the game yesterday and while obviously idk what I'm doing as of now, I'll get there. Big anime fighter like BB, GG, UNIB, etc so I should be able to understand some stuff well/quickly. Great stuff!
Thanks for making videos covering Tekken 8 and helping introduce new players to the game. It's quite a leap going from 2d to 3d fighters, but this one is well worth it. It reminds me of the T3/TTT PS2 era Tekken games in a good way, since those were my favorites of the series. There certainly is a need for video guides for the game! It does an okay job of explaining new mechanics but drops the ball on basic stuff like "how do I stand up" and "what are get-up attacks?" Okizeme is such a big thing in the game and it does not work anything like a 2D fighter.
I didn't know about the generic low parry so I decided to look up whether or not it's a new mechanic and apparently it's been around since the first Tekken Tag Tournament, which is ironically the first Tekken I had.
My guy you are doing god’s work. My friend and I bought this on the same day to play each other. I'm an MK main, and I cannot figure this shit out in Tekken. This guide has actually ready to play!
First Tekken game. Been wanting to get into it for years cause of how cool it always looked and the fun footsies in neutral. Glad to see the goat making a guide
This will generally work as a guide for any Tekken game from 5 onwards (power crushes don't exist back then, nor Heat, but that's basically the only difference) - the fundamentals of the game simply haven't changed that much other than slowing down the game a little bit by changing the basic move speed from 8f to 10f. Really useful since I know some people who are intent on picking up Tekken 7 now that it's megacheap and waiting for the Tekken 8 price to come down.
Hey man, would you consider doing a beginner's guide on how to actually approach a match? There's a lot of guides covering the mechanics and systems, but as a beginner, I find myself struggling on things like why am I always whiffing, why am I always getting hit when I press buttons etc. I think that would be very helpful! TLDR: Could you make a guide on the thought process of when to press what buttons and why?
I think you just gotta play matches and be slow. In a match you're eager to get a hit in but in all honesty that's not a real way to learn. Getting better means losing. If you're whiffing a lot it means you're coming in too strong without actually making sure you're in range of your attacks. Each character has their own range and the only way to figure that out is learning your character or the characters' ranges. Approaching a match is different for everyone and in a game like Tekken everyone's identity can be largely different. Lab it out with the bot set to block first attack standing and the rest crouch blocking and it'll help you understand the importance of range and why you're whiffing. Just practice until you feel the clique.
There's no easy way to do the homework, this all becomes part of intuition. You can be plus on hit/block against a Law player and think you can keep pressuring with highs but he'll throw out a low crushing move or launcher and boom your plus on block means nothing So it's really game to game situation, but as a noob I'd recommend just find your style and refine it and learn your opponents habits before it's too late
@@Wakasan626 it's as this guys has stated. There's no easy or quick right way to do it like in mortal Kombat one. There is no this is how you should always do this kind of scenario. Just find what you like and enjoy that!
Dont just throw out launchers all the time, theyre usually extremely punishable and could be why youre getting blown up. Find your characters main string, usually something like 1,2,3(you want this string to have a mid. If the string is all highs, try and find one with at least 1 mid) and use that to poke. Even if you whiff, youre generally fairly safe. Theres a lot of character guides out there, but this is as basic of starting point as I can give. Watch a vid for your specific char and listen to when they talk about a game plan
well I think the arcade quest mode will help with that but more than knowing any sick combo or anything else, what matters is just being comfortable. Just play, get a hang for the game flow and dont worry about anything past that for a bit.
Great video, as someone who has just casually played Tekken over the years every other release or so there was a lot of things here I had no idea about. :)
Great vid as always man, the game is honestly so much fun. Throwing out some punches as a panda as well, definently facilitates the overall fighting game expierence.
God damn the info about the tech roll is clutch. Your videos are so great for me, as a longtime casual button masher, to really learn all the game systems. Now I understand a bit more about what I have been unintentionally doing lol!
I’m a Street Fighter player and have tried Tekken before but was turned off by the movelist, but always followed the game casually. This is the first time I’m actually learning the game and even though I’m getting my ass kicked online, this guide is very useful for a noob to the series
Even though I grew up with Tekken as a kid starting with Tekken 2, due to the lack of tutorials at the time, I never knew that tech rolls were a thing to get up faster off a knockdown. It wasn't until later on in Tekken 7 when I found videos that talked about that. (Now, I know past games did have tips on what kind of techniques you can do, but I always missed that one). Now that we're in Tekken 8, hopefully videos like this will be helpful to those picking it up as their first Tekken game.
Thanks a lot for the tips/tricks! This is my first ever fighter…so this being broken down made everything a lot more digestible :) Here’s hoping after lots of practice I can get a grip on everything! I have a feeling memorizing certain inputs/combos is gonna be the real hard part for me.
This will be my first tekken. I knew the game was hard but man this feels like learning to control a robot mech while underwater welding on another planet blindfolded
took a lot of effort to listen and concentrate on this very well made video guide and *not* constantly being distracted by azucena's idle stance tekken 8 might be the first fighting game i am really getting into, i just finished the campaign and it's really fun.. admittedly mainly using the 'special style' this video is essential for me
This is awesome! I will definitely be using this to improve at the game for sure, thanks Rooflemonger this should really help out to understand the game on a deeper level as my main character Azucena
rooflemonger im not a beginner by any means these days so these guides arent really for me. But man i definitely send every beginner i know to your videos cause this is such solid information
Thanks for this video, it was pretty helpful to understand the game. Just wish maybe there was a little video slowdown when talking about specific visual effects or specific moves in a combo to get them into my head better.
I'll give you this roofle. This is a good guide that gave me insight into how Tekken works. Its not my cup of tea and I'll be totally honest my interest begins and ends with Reina so thanks for using her in your tutorial guide lol
thanks! great video. tekken is my first fighting game in like 20 years and no way I would have learned even half. like the powercrush moves. now I know I need at least 1 in order to interrupt attacks. 0 chance I would have figured that out anytime soon by scrolling through that massive move list. 😂 that why I always look up videos like this no matter the game. or streams. you learn in a week what you would normally have learned in a year if even.
The section about wake-up options helped so much. Been playing Tekken hardcore since Tekken 6 (after not touching the game since T3) and some of that stuff I still didn't know 💀😅😭🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️

God damn the info about the tech roll is clutch. Your videos are so great for me, as a longtime casual button masher, to really learn all the game systems. Now I understand a bit more about what I have been unintentionally doing lol!
bro i clicked this video heard ur voice and was like wait a sec, ive been subbed this guys always has good video tips
I’m a Street Fighter player and have tried Tekken before but was turned off by the movelist, but always followed the game casually. This is the first time I’m actually learning the game and even though I’m getting my ass kicked online, this guide is very useful for a noob to the series
make sure to check out the 2d to 3d video in the tekken playlist as help, stuff like the big movelists really are not all that bad
That power crush and low parry guide is going to help me a lot ty!
This is my first ever fighter…so this being broken down made everything a lot more digestible :)
Here’s hoping after lots of practice I can get a grip on everything! I have a feeling memorizing certain inputs/combos is gonna be the real hard part for me.
It's the adage but practice truly makes perfect. It's just like a real martial art the more time you put in the better you get
This will be my first tekken. I knew the game was hard but man this feels like learning to control a robot mech while underwater welding on another planet blindfolded
took a lot of effort to listen and concentrate on this very well made video guide and *not* constantly being distracted by azucena's idle stance
tekken 8 might be the first fighting game i am really getting into, i just finished the campaign and it's really fun.. admittedly mainly using the 'special style'
this video is essential for me
This is awesome! I will definitely be using this to improve at the game for sure, thanks Rooflemonger this should really help out to understand the game on a deeper level as my main character Azucena
Thanks for all the Tekken content !
rooflemonger im not a beginner by any means these days so these guides arent really for me. But man i definitely send every beginner i know to your videos cause this is such solid information
I love your videos , thank you Roofle! I understand so much more and can add that to my practice ! You’re appreciated it! thanks for ur hard work:)
God bless u for making these videos so soon after release! You've been workin hard!
Thanks for this video. I'm a button masher but after watching this video I learned there is a strategy to button mashing.
ngl needed this, this game doesnt teach you much
Finally. I needed this.
thanks! great video. tekken is my first fighting game in like 20 years and no way I would have learned even half. like the powercrush moves. now I know I need at least 1 in order to interrupt attacks. 0 chance I would have figured that out anytime soon by scrolling through that massive move list. 😂
that why I always look up videos like this no matter the game. or streams. you learn in a week what you would normally have learned in a year if even.
Exactly what I needed! You the goat!
My goodness, so much valuable information! My cousin is trying to get into Tekken, I’ll just send him here. Don’t ask me for 💩😂
great vid roof! you are a treasure to the fgc. thank you
The section about wake-up options helped so much. Been playing Tekken hardcore since Tekken 6 (after not touching the game since T3) and some of that stuff I still didn't know 💀😅😭🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Just wanna give a big thanks and show of appreciation for rooflemonger. The level of dedication and assistance to learn these fighting games you provide is top tier and like no other, keep doing what youre doing
Thank you so much! I needed this stuff spelled out for me. 😂
This man really used behoove lol respect it
Holy shit thank you. I am getting back into tekken and this was very helpful.
Thank you for this guide. You explained it perfectly.
Thanks 🙏🏼 Exactly what I need. My first TEKKEN since TEKKEN 8 in 1998 😅🙈
You’re a gentleman and a saint, roof!
Nice one Roof, much needed. I ain't played Tekken since Tekken 4 (which I realised is 20 yeaes ago 🙄) so my brain needs a huge refresh.
Wooo!!!!🎉🎉🎉 I got the Plat this weekend, loving it!
Great tips.
I will always suck at tekken, but I play it for the story anyway
You carried me in MK1 now Tekken I love you bro 😭
