Here's another good tip from us crazy Danes that like to dive when the water approaches freezing temps: 10 minutes before you go in, wash your hands in the cold water, and splash some on your face as well. Then do a couple of good jumpingjacks or similar fullbody exercises to get the blood rolling. This helps with circulation in the peripheries in my experience. Water is now 3 degrees celsius here, just shot myself a nice cod for dinner yesterday :)
Being from norway and being used to diving in 0-2°C i must say that the gloves should be put inside the arms of your suit. Same goes for socks, i couldn't see how you'd done those. With a 3mm singlet, 3mm suit, 5mm 5-finger gloves and 7mm socks i do icediving for 1-2hours during winter before getting cold ;) - socks and gloves on the inside of the suit og i wear the singlet under the pants-waist.
Done some paua diving in southern New Zealand with the water temp at 10C and only had a 7mm wetsuit .... soon learnt good quality wetsuits that aren’t old and compressed are worth every cent .... also ran a hose off the tell tail which was toastie as 😊
Great advice your videos are always awesome thank you appreciate it. Peeing in your wetsuit does help. Look forward to the next video Daniel keep them coming
Diving in Northern New England is always cold. Hypothermia tends to sneak up on you since its gradual. If your fingers stop moving like they should and or you start to get leg cramps, it is time to get out of the water.
Dan thank you for all that you do for the sport of spearfishing and freediving! I truly enjoy watching your videos from the Great Lakes of Michigan. Right now my dive buddy and I are going to order our first Polo Sub suit based on your recommendations. Our water temps in the winter are 0-2 on average. Would you say the 9.5mm would be best or go up to the 11.5mm? Thank you for any guidance you can offer. We will be using them for spearfishing here in the winter months.
When you are wearing shorts over your wetsuit, do you just not use the pissette ? Or are you able to drop the shorts while wearing the belt and still use it without having to get out of the water?
Does not sound good quality with your 9.5 wetsuit if you need some extra in 6 degree though. I got 7mm wetsuit, 5mm gloves and 7mm socks. It holds more than 2.5 hours in 1-2 degrees water. When i feel cold after that, i come up and use a bag of warm water to flush through my wet suit inside, take a rest and there could be another 1.5 hours.
Just extra on the socks and gloves as they are only 5mm. I dived alongside some icebergs in salt water around 0°C two weeks ago with my 9.5mm and no problems at all.
You guys are insane! I dont think I could handle that 😬😅 major props 🙌 Awesome video too, with some awesome tips! Love watching your videos. Aloha from the Aloha State🤙Let's go dive if you're ever on the Pacific pond! 😁 Keep up the amazing production on your videos! Very inspirational
hey man, random question: I have a 7mm wetsuit and wearing 5mm socks for colder water. Should I wear the socks over the wetsuit or under? I didn't want to stretch out the foot holes of the wetsuit so I wore the socks over the wetsuit especially since the socks are pretty thick, but i kept getting water in the socks. Also do you wear the gloves over or under the wetsuit? Thanks!
I always wear socks under the wetsuit legs. When you swim forward they will fill up with water like you say. Not as important with the gloves and I find it really had to do with thicker suits. Also I often take my gloves on and off picking up cameras etc so impractical to do it all day.
@@DanielMann thanks man, I was told by the guy at the store, bottom of my wetsuit has I think what’s called “aqua lock”, they tell me that it makes the foot area pretty tight. So I’m just not sure if it would fit the socks inside
You said to put a vest under your suit, does that make your suit overly tight? I was just wondering because I was looking into a 3mm vest to put under my well fitting 7mm suit and I didn’t want to spend the money if it’s probably going to constrict me.
I am diving in temps, 0 to 2 by celcius for years, i have a vest, i dont feel any difference with it, a proper suit does, new 7mm works for a year, 9mm for 3 years, wetsuits age fast, preasure reduse the thicness in time. Gloves 7mm and socks 9mm helps a lot :)
Good stuff m8. Any chance you could do a video on Spearfishing boats? Especially the blue boat you always use and the white one that sits low in the water.
i just got the 5ml gloves (probably better than the mits i use) and some shorts. i hope they are worth it. under your suit, you have a bathing suit or just the wetsuit? im diving 1c waters in canada
Awesome vid Dan, how much weight do you cary with the full setup i.e. wetsuit shorts and the under vest. Also do you use ankle weights. Have a good one mate.
I love your videos and have done the opposite of you- going from the UK to Aus. I dive rather than spear fish though and in Tassie it can get 12-13'c. I love that Tenson coat you have on the boat- is that a special edition with the patch on the right sleeve? I would love to know where I could get one!! Cheers Graz in Tassie
With a proper fitting wetsuit a thin layer of water will get in between your skin and the opencell, very thin. The body warms up this using the insulation of the neoprene and you stay warm. When you introduce more water say a pint from a big piss into the suit it sloshes around and removes heat from the body. My custom made suits let in very little water and that’s why they are warm.
Depends on where you’re staying and where you fly from. I’ve done two trips from London and one was £600 the other cost me £1000. I’ve always brought along non perishable food from the U.K. as well to keep costs down as groceries tend to be pretty punchy in Scandinavia, especially in the Arctic circle where vegetables are grown in massive green houses.
First time I’ve had a 9.5mm jacket. Every other cold water experience has just been a 7mm although I’ve always used the shorts. Massive difference having the 9.5mm jacket though.
Ah nice! Super robotica in that thing?! I've use a ripcurl flashbomb and it's plenty warm enough for UK winters, quite sweaty actually! Haha. Used to have a mares 5/10 and like you said you could use the over/under suit to make it up to 10.
Hey dude love the channel but I’m just wondering why you always go spearfishing in like norweigh and stuff when Australia has awesome diving like all your other vids with Tim McDonald i know you live in England now but still I would much rather spearfish in Australia then norweigh would like to hear your opinion though cheers👍👍
Living in England obviously means I’m not going to be diving in Australia, 24hr flight and £700! I love diving all these new places in Europe. I’ve learnt so much and done things many people will never get the chance to do. If I was in Australia I’d be shooting the same fish as always and not learning new things. Australians often tell me to come home because the diving is better. Better is all relative. I’d rather shoot one halibut than one hundred Spanish mackerel because I’ve done that before. Each to their own!
Great videos as all ways mate great information for spear fishing And question how would a 80cm Rob Allen Roller gun go at shooting barramundi mate? As always great content
Never used an 80cm Rob Allen roller but I had an 80cm roller I made that I used to shot a lot of barramundi with. Rigged with an 8mm spear and 18mm rubbers it worked exceptionally well. If you check out really old videos there is one I did about shooting barramundi 👌
Hey marn don't forget all us Bondi vegan potential spearfisherpeople/nonpeople/nonmurderers/whatever. I carrnt wear like products made from like non organic stuff n that. So how can you justify your murder n stuff cause I'm really interested in getting into it but just in a non voilent way like hay. Cheers Carnt!
You kinda hit it with the warm engine water but bringing hot water to poor in your suit before diving is a great trick to beat the cold. This way the first water to enter your suit is hot instead of freezing cold.

Or 8 pints of beer if English.
@@trodd77 Or just get a dry suit🤗👍
Thanks for the tips Dan. the water up there looks so good!

Well said Daniel, perfect 🔝😃😉👋👋ciao ciao
By "6 degrees" do you mean F or C?
Because 6C is warm where I live. That's May weather.
°C. The only way to fly!
Daniel, come over the Caribbean Coast of Honduras, spearfish wahoo, tuna, mahi, etc. You're always welcome
8° is pretty comfortable temperature for 9mm wetsuit. Good 7mm 3 finger gloves and 9mm socks and you are ready to go.
Diving in Northern New England is always cold. Hypothermia tends to sneak up on you since its gradual. If your fingers stop moving like they should and or you start to get leg cramps, it is time to get out of the water.
Thanks Daniel, I absolutely agree with everything except the muffins!
Thanks! For the video, my last video is the same than you, but in Spain the temperature is hotter than your zone.
Great video
7mm suit.
5mm gloves 5 fingers
7mm socks
That's all I need to be plenty warm all year around in cold Norway
Nice mate, definitely no coral sea! Gotta start doing the Wim Hof method of you keep diving in those stupid temps 🧖♂️☃️☃️☃️
good tips, I live on American East coast and the water gets chilly fast here

i felt claustrophobic just watching you in that suit
I’ve worn more stiff off the shelf cheap Chinese made 5mm suits than my 9.5mm Polosub. Super comfortable and flexible being smoothskin.
When you are wearing shorts over your wetsuit, do you just not use the pissette ? Or are you able to drop the shorts while wearing the belt and still use it without having to get out of the water?
I know this is a pretty old video but how would a dry suit work? Or is it too cumbersome
Too cumbersome and you can’t freedive in them really.
Hi Daniel. Are the 9.5 mm Polosub jackets always with 8.5 mm hood and arms or did you ask them to make it like that?
I asked them to make it like that for more flexibility.
@@DanielMann Thanks. Gotta get ready for the cold water in Øresund. Last spring I was freezing in my 7.5 mm!
Get yourself some wetsuit shorts, game changer 👌
Already have some but I have never used them :)

How do you find the thicker wetsuits for flexibility related breath hold issues? No worries, or some effect?
Not as nice as a 3mm for sure but what choice do we have 😁

Lol I’m going to Maui in may
how come the vest is worn beneath the suit but the shorts are worn over the suit?
Vest is for additional warmth but the shorts are to stop water entering under the jacket when you jump in the water from the side of the boat.
Skits mate well done
Good video!
Is a smooth Skin warmer than a nylon spearfish suit with the same mm thickness? (both are open cell)
Definitely, they dry quicker on the boat than nylon exterior suits.
awesome tenson jacket! where you bought it ? there is model name 51 or S1 ? please let me know

I only use a thin 2mm smoothskin vest. It is obviously going to be more restrictive than not wearing it but I don’t find it a problem at all.

Both unfortunately in Australia, back there this year so may be able to do a video then.
It looks like immersion does not sell these products anymore. Does anyone know of quality alternatives?
I've heard good things about these frivannsliv.no/products/frivannsliv-soft-grip-3-fingervott-7mm?_pos=1&_sid=11d33c2ce&_ss=r
@@DanielMann thank you Daniel! I love your work and dedication!
Hi
New to diving in general,so I'm shooting what might be a stupid question, but wouldn't a dry suit keep you warmer instead of a wet suit?
Dry suits are used In scuba diving since they need an air supply
Good luck
i just got the 5ml gloves (probably better than the mits i use) and some shorts. i hope they are worth it. under your suit, you have a bathing suit or just the wetsuit?
im diving 1c waters in canada
I go commando under the wetsuit every time.
Great video one question wat length gun do you recommend for water with medium vis to very clear water for 2 kg fish up to 20 kg fish?
120 with two bands and a 7.5mm shaft.
Thanks
Awesome vid Dan, how much weight do you cary with the full setup i.e. wetsuit shorts and the under vest. Also do you use ankle weights. Have a good one mate.
Hey Brendan I recall around 5kg in the belt and about 3.5 on the vest. Never used ankle weights, sounds very fatiguing for long swims.
Great tips

No idea where the coat is from, someone gave it to me as they were changing their ski wear.

I wanna see some more spearfishing in UK
thank you nice video

An Australian that’s spent too long in the U.K...

Daniel Mann tank you for that information
My tip: go pee often because allot of your body temperature is used to heat up your pee in your bladder so it wont freeze.
Peeing in your suit ultimately makes you colder by introducing more liquid into the suit.
Peeing too often can lead to hydrostatic squeeze. Which is less than ideal.?
Is this guy australian?
Yes.
That's it, I'm gona start spear fishing. Then I can eat muffins 😋
this does not apply to us native norwegians! i dive with a 7 mill at winter and a 5 mill in the summer
How about peeing?
Makes you colder. Get a pee valve on your suit and it’s warmer in the long run.
I'll tell ya how you deal with that cold.... your F##$!N nuts
