      When done right there is absolutely no issue with it at all but I suppose the concern would be people dropping a screw into the camera body or just pouring in heat compound.
      I would have thought there wouldn't be an issue but at the same time I thought I better mention it in case Nikon did have an issue with it.
      I would be the one in trouble then.

    I would like to modify my z8, I bought a door for the memory card on the Nikon website and I would like to make a modification to put a cf express to ssd zitay and close the door at the same time and the cable would pass between the cage and the z8, in short do I have to disassemble the Nikon Z8 to remove the door? I don't mind doing it but just to know...since it will void my warranty. Thks guys

    Good
    Have you tried using another CF Express B card? In my case I used the same card you used, it heated up after 30 seconds of film. Replace with the ANGELBIRD card CFexpress AV PRO SX Type B 160 Gb card, this message didn't appear again, I don't have another card from this brand bigger than this one. But still the z8 camera, if it's outside in the sun, it will heat up like larva...

      Hi, thanks for watching, I appreciate the feedback. I am thinking your Prograde Gold card could be the older generation card, the card I am using here is the Gen 4.0 card and they are a lot faster and more thermally efficient thankfully.
      The older cards overheated very quickly alright. I am looking at testing a few more cards going forward to see how much of a difference there is between them, I just need to get my hands on a few different makes now.

    What if you record on an external SSD drive on a Atomos ninja ?

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That will work alright but it only outputs up to 4k 10 bit 4.2.2 Nlog via the HDMI output, it kind of takes the advantage out of the raw 12 bit internal recording though.

    Hello as a wedding photographer with some video at times how would this camera handle the outside temperatures? I wished I could find an actual video that shows outdoor use with this overheating test

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The trouble is there are so many variables involved. That's probably why not many people have done tests like this.
      It depends on what card you are using, the video format you are recording in and finally your ambient temperature. They all play their part.
      Are you looking at Nlog 12 but Raw 4K or 8K? What card are you thinking of using and how long are you recording for roughly and in what temps?
      That would give a good indication then.

    • @rubenramirez8241
      @rubenramirez8241 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I normally just shoot at 4k 30p to 120p anything higher than that for what I do would be an overkill. Temps I would say anywhere from 75 to 105 degrees in direct sun especially when shooting the ceremony. About 1 hour long straight shooting. As far as card I’ve heard shooting on a fast enough SD card would be fine but I haven’t seen it yet. So a good test would be on the CFExpress and SD card.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rubenramirez8241 a good SD will handle 4k30p alright for an hour you should have no issue then. The ambient temp is the slight worry though.
      As I am living in Ireland we don't have temps that high. I am guessing your best bet is the Nikon filmmakers group on Facebook. They should be able to share more insight with you there as I know there are a good few Z8 shooters in there from all around the world.
      Fingers crossed they can give you a definite answer.

    Do you know if using the battery grip would decrease the heat and hot cardboard warnings?

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The battery grip doesn't help with the hot card warnings, I haven't tested them yet but a friend of mine has and he said it makes it slightly worse as the heat can't get out of the camera body as easily then. The plastic in the grip insulates the underneath of the camera so it's one less surface to dissipate the heat then. As I say I haven't tested it myself but that's what I was told by someone that tested it.

      @kieranhayesphotography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, thanks for watching and the feedback. Yes, thermal pad would also work the only concern I had with a pad is that it might interfere with the weather sealing of the camera.
      I never tried the CF to ssd adaptor but I know a few people have mentioned it alright.
      Are the data transfer rates high enough from the dummy card? I must look into that a bit more.

      @@kieranhayesphotography In any case for use on a gimbal or a tripod, the SSD via the CF express port works rather well, because the only problem in my opinion is that the door remains open, I don't see too much of a problem with in any case the Samsung 980 or 990 pro 2TB or 4TB SSDs.

  • @kotolows

    Why do you focus on the hot card warning instead of the hot camera/cpu warning? Try to test recording in 4K H.265 60p with oversampling enabled - this is the most useful and at the same time demanding recording setting. Since the CFExpress card heats up even if not used in Z8, take out the CFExpress completely and use an SD card for recording.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi thanks for watching, I focus on the hot card warning as this video is all about getting heat out of the Z8 so I tested it at 8K60P which is the same as 4K60P with oversampling on. At ISO 4000 and a constantly moving subject the processor was also being seriously stressed but as I say it's all about getting the heat out and seeing how much of a difference the modification makes.
      Its not my modification, I just purchased it and wanted to share what I found.
      Thanks for the input 👍

    • @kotolows

      @@kieranhayesphotography I have been in contact with the creator of this modification part, who has presented to me many interesting insights into the problem. I am also considering ordering the part from him, since it seems like the best overall modification to alleviate the heat issue. My request to test with these specific settings is for me to know how the modification improves my specific usage of Z8 with the modified part applied.
      I do on occasion long continuous recordings on a tripod where the camera shuts down if oversampling is enabled. I would love to see an independent test of such use case - before it gets too hot, the camera is turned off for 2 minutes, or alternatively, the oversampling is turned off and a new recording is started right away, then after 15 minutes the oversampling is turned on again and a new recording started right away. Will the modification transfer the heat out from the camera to the tripod fast enough?

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@kotolows That's a good question and I see why you are asking now.
      I am looking at cooling via the HDMI and USB C ports also and I hope with the base plate and these options also used it will seriously help with heat then and we can forget about it in most use cases.
      The big problem for me is I need to do each test at least 3 or 4 times and I need to let the camera cool down for hours in between so I can be sure of the results.
      That's all time I don't really have these days as I have tons of shoots on these days.
      I plan to do a lot more testing soon and I know I sort of neglected 4K this time but it took me nearly a week to make that video 😢

    Someone actually needs to create a vertical grip for Z8 with a built-in Copper heat sink that touches those exposed metal parts, under that plastic cover, directly, where the copper heat sink gets cooled by a built-in fan. This would be the ultimate solution.

    Problem here is the crappy cooling "system" of the Z8. There are only small connections to the case and this can't be "fixed". It will bottleneck the heat. This metal plate will help but not as much as someone hopes. Using thermal paste is not preferred! And I think it may evaporates over time and/or crawls deeper into the camera. If you need to shot in 8K than use a Z9. There you have a proper magnesia body connected to the CPU and card slots. Sorry but you can't "fix" the Z8 without a bigger modification.

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey David, thanks for the input, just to clarify I never said this was a fix but something that would help and it does help. Hence the long video and all the recordings showing the time increases.
      There is no fix as it's a design issue more than anything else as you say and as I pointed out in the videos.
      Yes, the Z9 is better for long runs and has better heat dissipation but I don't like the larger form factor and I am mainly a photographer that does video on the side so I don't need long video runs.
      This was just me explaining how to get better times for people that may need it.
      Which does work btw as the video clearly shows, it's also the second step in reducing the heat as I have posted another video before and I have a third step coming soon.
      You might not be aware but this also happens to people shooting in burst mode in areas of high ambient temps and the plate seriously helps there too.
      On the point about thermal paste running deep into the camera, that won't happen, it's not that viscous. Thermal paste doesn't run and there isn't that much of it there anyway.
      Enjoy the Z9 and have a great day.

    Cool idea! All I can advise is to make a part out of copper and a cage out of copper! Another idea is to try removing the battery and charging the camera only via USB C. Also, since the CF is heating up, you can insert a dummy with a battery into the CF Express slot, as you did th-cam.com/video/tNTI31kBgiM/w-d-xo.html. And please, could you compare it with your ND filter th-cam.com/video/vWSHovOhJ18/w-d-xo.html when it goes on sale? I wonder who has less color distortion!

    • @kieranhayesphotography
      @kieranhayesphotography  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Copper would be great for the cage but it would be incredibly expensive to make it. Most cages need a 10k plus unit sales figure for the investment in casting and moulding to be paid back.
      I am not sold on the dummy CF Express cards. I don't like the cable and fiddlyness of it. It would help alright though to help keep the camera cool. Somebody else commented about that on another video and I asked them to let me know how they got on and I never heard back from them.
      I was asked to review a VND filter from them a while back, I think it was a different one though. There are loads of VND filters out there and unless it ends out on my desk I won't be looking for it.
      I have more than enough to keep me busy these days. Thanks for the input and have a great week.

      The larger body also seriously helps to throw out all that heat then too.
