  • For those of you who think a face mask is useless, unnecessary, or worse, this video isn't for you. This video is for people who have been curious about non-medical grade face coverings and what it's like to run in them. I've tried a variety of styles and materials as my wife and I have been trying out a variety for use by ourselves and our children. And I've also been running in a neck gaiter during winter temps for years, for whatever that is worth.
    In no way does this video address whether one must or should wear a mask while running, nor does it cover the medical efficacy of any of the face coverings.
    Making a review video of different face coverings I've used for running was something I hoped I'd never do. But here we are.
    None of these are medical grade or intended to be compared against an N95. My wife and I purchased all these masks with our own money. No one sent any of these to us or will be reimbursing us for our purchases. No one will be paying us to make this video or to use these particular face masks. I do not make any money from any of the links to the masks below.

    Thanks for doing this video. I think many will find it helpful. I like to wear the neck gaiter because I’m an ex smoker and breathing is already a little rough, the gaiter is easy to pull down when I’m not around anyone and I can pull it back over my face easily as I come within close proximity to others. You are an exceptional human in my opinion kofuzi, I appreciate you.

    Thank you for making this ! At first I was doing runs in my cotton mask with elastic bands , but it was really hard to breathe . I made myself a gaitor out of cutting a clean pair of boxer briefs in half , it works perfectly on the cheap. I did 10 miles with it today , so there's no excuse for anyone else .

    I’ve been wearing my buff on my runs and just pulling it up when I pass people. Hope that is enough. I have asthma and find it difficult to breathe when I keep it up the whole time! Good for you for doing all that you can to prevent the spread and keep yourself safe!

      I think that is what most people would recommend. Gov. Cuomo in NY suggested that one can have it around the neck but not on the face while running, but put it over the face when you get to an intersection where there are people waiting for the light.

    I congratulate you for your care of yourself, your family and the rest of the people that you cross with. I unfortunetly had to choose between not wearing a mask or running, just can’t breath fine while running and wearing one of those masks, so I try to run very early and at places where I don’t expect to find people, here in Rio de Janeiro. Be safe!!!

    I don’t wear one running around my house, if I come across people I just cross the street. Sometimes it’s like a game of froggie lol. When I do make it out to the trails I will definitely be wearing my gaiter as I’m sure it will be harder to stay the 6 feet apart. I think what you are doing is great. And thanks for the mask suggestions!

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I usually just try and pop over into the street if there are other people. (I usually run before 6am so traffic isn’t usually an issue). Sometimes, people will surprise me as they exit a building or wait inside the bus shelters. So I just leave it up, just in case.

    I have been running with facemasks on and the problem I run into is that eventually they get so wet from my sweat that I can no longer breath through them. Has anyone else dealt with this problem and what did you do to solve it? Maybe I should try a different material for the face mask?

    Thanks. Really informative and it's good to know that just because one mask doesn't work well or pulls on your ears, a different type will be a better fit for you. My Smartwool gaiter is great in winter, but was just too warm recently - so I'm getting a few different masks. I also like how you looked at the donut place as you ran past it.

    It's so interesting for those of us who do sport outdoors in the northern hemisphere that have a winter... we have been wearing things like buffs and masks for years to keep the cold away... no one has ever paid us any attention. Now, the face coverings are this divisive hot topic. We haven't seen any warm temperatures yet, it will be interesting to see the creative ways people come up with for keeping cool in their masks. Hanging the buff around the neck until someone is nearby is going to he a little more prohibitive when temperatures reach the 80s and 90s. We are all learning this new normal together.

    luckily I'm living in the suburbs where it's easy to keep six feet from other people almost all the time. I maybe would wear a face covering of a kind as extra protection, but here in southern California, I'm not accustomed to buffs or neck gaiters and find them very restrictive and uncomfortable, especially in the hot weather we've ben having (some days have been in excess of 90 degrees). masks are required here if you're in a public place unless you can keep six feet from all non-household members at all times, and I think I'm able to satisfy those requirements on my runs, so I don't wear one. Maybe I should? I dunno

      Don't overanalyze our dumb mayor's rules. People can wear them at all times if they want, but that's not the rule outdoors unless you're around crowds at a beach or a crowded hiking trail. Simply bring a mask with you, when you jog outside or any time you go out. Nobody said you have to wear that thing the minute you are outside. Having jogged outside since March, it's easy for me personally to avoid people at all times of the day here. I hardly see many people out and if I do, I just cross the street or go down another street. I don't think I've come closer than 40 feet to anyone out jogging, yet I see joggers with masks on when there's hardly anybody else outside around them.

    When I wore a gaiter first time last winter it created moisture around my mouth nose area and somehow made the experience worst. It was something made out of wool. Maybe I should try something similar to synthetic-like one you had in your intro/throughout the video on your neck. Thanks for being a responsible adult in this Corona Epoch. Your videos are helping me and other runner get by emotionally at least.

    I live in brazil where we're hitting over 100f right now. I'm running with a columbia freezer zero II neck gaiter which is extremely comfortable and feels like it's not even there. On the other hand the fabric is so thin it might as well not be there, so great video for looking for alternatives. I really can't do masks because the elastics mess up with my glass legs and makes them slip all over the place and even fall if I look down. I might just sew a filter pocket to it or something.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Masks are quite difficult generally with glasses. A lot of fogging

  • @wy3131
    @wy3131 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For the difficulties of breathing with masks with improved filtering ie. Medical grade or better, just think it’s like running with a gas mask used during a lab performance test. Otherwise for running out in the open without any people around, there’s really no need to wear a mask except for anonymity or for warmth (With medical foundation). BTW, cotton masks’ benefits are very limited compared with 3 layer medical grade masks. If there’s a need to wear a mask, then buy and wear a proper 3 layer (as minimum) for genuine benefit.

    I like wearing the neck buff the best of all my options. I run early in the morning and encounter very few people so I pull the buff up as I approach someone and then back down after I pass. I just leave it on all day and pull it up when I go into a grocery store or come in close contact with others.

    Could you recommend ones that work with glasses? The issue many face while running (or any heavy breathing) is fogging up of glasses. Normal everyday wear is usually okay with glasses. With some face coverings, even without glasses, I can feel air shoot up into the eye. Thanks.

    I've been running since last year. I was using the gym as a cardio and the way to burn off calories. After the gyms got closed I am running outside with my bandana mask (diy surgical mask style) on my runs. At least I am getting comfortable but it sticks on my face from moisture and salava. It sucks and it annoys me most of the time. But running with an correct breathing technique is difficult underneath my mask. Are there any adjustments to make here? I would like to run comfortably but I dislike wearing foam masks for no protection against covid.

    I personally do not wear a mask when I run, not even in single digit temps, because I find it far too restrictive. I do find it fascinating to see how you run in one most of the winter. Except for the time of year, this is not anything you've not already been doing.

    I've been running with a mask for about 1,5 months now. We have to wear mask here when we're going out. I don't want to waste my time debating the rules, I just want to go out running, so I wear mask.
    In the first 2 runs I developed side stitch on my right stomach, probably because I'm not breathing like I used to. But after that, all is well. At least now I think I'm getting used to it.
    I have 2 types of masks for running. First is a single layer scuba fabric mask, thin and breathable... so thin I think they don't do anything for protection 😂
    The second type is a dual layer mask, also fabric. Not as breathable but probably more functional in terms of protection. Maybe. I don't know.
    They're both in "cup" shape like the second mask you showed in this video. I agree, they cover the face better with this shape. Looks better too.

    Running in TN now and I have a hard enough time finding something that will stay on my face if I need to wear one (small head) and one that I wont inhale the fabric and choke on when it gets saturated. For reference I lost over 750ml of fluid on a routine 13.1 a few days ago and I have a shock doctor face cover around my neck. I ise a BOCO gear for my everyday activities but it wont work for a run

    Thanks for doing this video. I'm new to wearing face coverings while running. Even during Cleveland winters, I haven't been one to wear a face covering. I've been covering now, even though I try to run in less occupied spaces. I used a buff, sort of like the neck gaiter, and also a homemade mask that ties behind my neck. Personally, I'd rather do the responsible thing and use a mask. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of the cure. Any thoughts on races in the future? I'm signed up for Big Sur which is now in November. I'm definitely a back of the pack runner, so I'm thinking that I'll end up wearing a mask for the race.

    Great video Mike. Thanks. I got a neck gaiter a couple of weeks ago and would pull it on and off if I pass people. At the end of the run, there were people coming up so I pulled it on and because I had sweated in it for an hour, it was soaked and immediately stuck to my nostrils and mouth when I tried to breath in. Now when I have it on, I have to shape my mouth like I’m grimacing so that my lips form a cavity so that air can go in. It’s probably not hot enough in Chicago yet to where your mask is drenched, but have you run in to an issue like this?

I have a synthetic blend one that you cannot feel your breath out of no matter how hard you blow, but as a result, it's not the most breathable thing in the world. I'd like to get something a bit more breathable when I'd like an alternative.

    Hi Kofuzi. A good idea to do this video. I am lucky that the part of Scotland I live in, I can access the countryside from my house, but I can see why you would want to cover up in a city. We may have to cover up more soon, so I was hoping to get away with using a buff. Who would of thought we would be discussing face coverings at this time of year. I have used a buff in the winter for mountain biking and running, but really didn't imagine I would need it in warmer weather, strange times indeed.

    I got a couple of face masks in the mail the other day. For the time being I don't think it's necessary to wear them during my runs since there's not too many people around in the small Swedish city I live in. I'll definitely be wearing a mask when visiting more crowded places like the supermarket though.

But I feel like i still have to put it on, as i need to considerate to other people as the droplet might blown off easily to other people that i just passed by. To be honest, is not comfortable to have the mask on while running. I'm wearing the one that made from fabric cloth, i had to uncover my nose in order to get breath comfortably, otherwise i might suffocated a bit. Thx for sharing this video kofuzi! I am somewhat fortunate in that prior to the current situation I have always ran alone and late at night never really encountering many, if any at all, people while i run. Because of that, I do not wear a mask when i run because it’s exclusively in my neighborhood. The rare times I see someone while I’m running late at night it’s very easy to cross to the other side of the road. But, starting this coming Monday our governor is asking that people wear masks when going out since we are going to be starting the process of businesses opening back up. A lot of businesses have already said they will require a mask if you want to come in regardless of whether the government can enforce mask wearing. I have ordered masks from a company called American Giant that is an American company that produces all of their products 100% in the United States. They are supposed to arrive tomorrow.

    Living at 7900 ft., it would literally be dangerous for me to run with a mask, especially at my age (68). Instead, I wear a buff which I pull up as a courtesy if anyone is coming anywhere near me, or I go in a different direction. I’m running when and where I can avoid people the most. Fortunately that is not too hard to do.

    I'm not encouraging anybody not to wear a mask. The pros probably outweigh the cons. However, there's some myths that need to be debunked. According to exercise scientist, breathing thru a mask doesn't duplicate altitude training. The masks were using to shield ourselves from the coronaviris are not the same masks that fitness athletes use for training. They use elevation training masks that come with a adjustable valve to increase and decrease oxygen levels. So they can train themselves over time to perform with lower oxygen saturation levels. But studies show that this a myth too. Also, if your breathing hard your expelling moisture and the mask becomes saturated. Then it becomes ineffective. When I run my nose runs then I have to pull down my mask to blow my nose. When you don't have a mask that's easy to do.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure on that one. I know I’ve had trouble running in a balaclava and snow goggles. You need a way to better ventilate air away from the lenses or out the mask.
      My wife has light sensitive eyes and is already worried that she won’t be able to wear sunglasses at all this summer

      I haven't run in a mask, but I do wear one when going to the store. The mask I have has a piece along the nose that lets me better contour the mask to my face which helps some. But what really helps is I'll take a piece of tissue and fold it into a strip to place along the top part of my mask to create a sort of gasket with my mask and face. This helps a lot, but I don't know how well it would hold up or hold in place if I were running. I have the first type of mask that kofuzi showed, the saddle style.

    • @BenTorode
      @BenTorode 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Japanese police suggest two methods for standard surgical masks. One is to fold the top inwards, which offers partial fog reduction. The second is to fold a facial tissue four times (so you get a long thing rectangle) and apply it to the top inside part of the mask.
