  • This Episode of the Bus series we start making panels that you just can't buy. With the body drop we have to rebuild all new wheel wheels front and rear. It is a lot of work to go very low. What do you think? Please leave comments and stuff for the ole algorithms.

Making it a family project and learning experience. Nice!

I try to wrangle them into it as much as I can. My son is in college now so I don't get as much time with him. He has been working in my shop since he was a baby so he picks things up very well and is a great student. He is a better mechanic than me and works circles around me now so that is really fun to enjoy seeing him grow. Some of the best days of my life.

I not a fan of radical suspension modifications by non engineers or home builders. Engine and body modes are ok but not suspension. . Such modifications should not be legal for the road. Maybe for the track , but not the road. I seen too many homemade suspension jobs end up killing the drivers and other people they crashed into. Suspension systems on cars are one of the most regulated parts of a cars systems by the NTSB and DOT when manufacturers design cars. They have to pass rigorous testing to be used. You cant just eyeball a suspension design, it has to be engineered with calculations of stress and load points to determine size of bolts , braces and couplings. .

Is your name Georg Lankenspurger? The inventor of Ackerman Geometry? I doubt it since he died in 1847. Anyhow, I don’t agree with you entirely. I’ve built many fast cars over the decades. We have made some suspension changes here and there. In fact, I just did some this last week. We have never crashed or had any serious problems. It all had to start somewhere. I wonder what Henry Ford knew about Ackermann when he started out. Now some slapass approach? Like Fred Flintstone? Not too good. But it seems even Fred made it to Bedrock.

@@killerkane1957 If you are going to look up things to try to sound educated, then look up the right things. First of all you modified your rear suspension idiot. as well as the vehicle structure. Also, Akerman did not invent that geometry, Erasmus Darwin did. It was for horse carriages and low speed vehicles; it is useless today. You prove my point. Your changes are as unsound as you are.

@josephkaminski1857 You are the one that doesn't sound educated. First don't assume just by a video that the content creator lacks the formal training of engineering principles to create safe working modifications to the factory suspension geometry. If you took the time to really look at what this bad ass fabricator has done, he has only modified the mounting structure and points of frame contact while maintaining as much factory suspension geometry as possible with a focus on making a hydraulicly adjustable ride height system. Furthermore Ken, to call out someone for engineering principles on only offering insults as opposed to offering suggestions, solutions or recommendations or contact info for NTSB and DOT inspection (which I'm not sure even exist for home builders, so please provide some links for the man) just simple internet troll hate from someone without credentials or a channel where they showcase their talents and passions! Besides I'm pretty sure he lives in Florida and not sure if you have ever been there? The standard Florida-man does not bother with inspections mainly because there are no inspections required by the state! It's Florida there are people driving golfcarts and unregistered side-by-sides on the street. So, if you have nothing nice or complementary to say maybe keep it that way!

@josephkaminski1857 - Joesph interesting conversation you have going here. Seems you have confused me with other people in your responses to your statement as this is the first reply I have made. First I will say that I think you may be confused as to what changes I have made to the BUS. All I have done is essentially moved the body down 5 inches and changed from a fixed torsion bar mount to an adjustable one. I have not changed, altered or revised any of the suspension geometry, arms or other components. The whole point of doing the body drop is to keep the geometry the same or as close to stock as possible for the best ride quality. 99% of lowered VW buses don't put in the work and do change the geometry to get them low resulting in poor ride quality and minimal suspension travel. If you would like to see a more "radical" suspension redesign take a look at my WJ project here on my channel. That one I did completely redesign the suspension. I cut off every mounting point and changed the style and geometry of both the front and rear suspension. Went from cheap thin stamped arms to .25" think 2 " Diameter links with adjustable joints. Where factory was non-adjustable. I aligned it all myself and immediately drove it with my 3 kids from Florida to Canada and back. Just to prove it out I guess. I would suspect that there are thousands of hot rods, trucks, Jeeps, race cars etc. built every year by guys just like me that have the skill and knowledge to built safe and effective chassis for the type being made. Each one being unique and purpose built for its intended use. This is the norm here in the USA. We are very capable of building our own things without needing the government telling us what or how to do something. Just look through TH-cam or instagram and you will find hundreds of channels with cars being built right now with custom made suspensions and chassis. A little bit about me. I have been designing and fabricating now for over 35 years. 30 years full time. I have employed dozens of other fabricators as well. I have designed and built hundreds of motorcycle chassis, hot rods, 4wd trucks and Jeeps etc. Oh almost forgot I have worked 14 of those years as the Senior Design Engineer for a Department of Defense firm making Anit-Sub warfare components for the Navy. So I don't know if I am qualified in your eyes or not. Either way I will keep doing what I am doing and doing it well. Have a good day.
