Today on I Hear Voices, Will Friedle and Christy Carlson Romano sit down with ONE and ONLY Kevin Conroy AKA Batman AKA Bruce Wayne. Kevin has been bringing the animated Batman to life through his voice for 30 YEARS! Can you believe it?!
Kevin shares how his Julliard training and love for Shakespeare inform the way he voices Batman. He also details the origin of how the two distinct voices between Bruce Wayne and Batman came to be. Kevin is such a generous artist and it’s evident in the way he’s mentored Will, but also in how he celebrates every person who acts or voices a Batman. He gives insight as to why Batman is still a relevant and welcomed character to explore.
Kevin also shares what cartoons he grew up watching and offers the sweetest story about his first imaginary friends. Although Kevin believes the Batman story is the ultimate true hero’s journey, Kevin is OUR TRUE HERO and we think you’ll agree.

Welcome to the official Christy Carlson Romano TH-cam channel! Christy has been a working actress and singer since she was 6 years old. She moved to Los Angeles with her mother when she was 14 to star in the Disney Channel franchise, Even Stevens as Ren Stevens alongside Shia LaBeouf. Christy enjoyed many years with Disney gaining an Emmy nomination for her voice work as Kim Possible and starring on Broadway in Beauty and the Beast. About Will Friedle:
Will Friedle’s extensive career has spanned three decades in sitcoms, movies, animated series and videogames. He has brought to life roles as diverse as the iconic underachieving older brother Eric Matthews on the classic TV sitcom Boy Meets World and the Batman of the future in Batman Beyond. He can currently be heard in roles on DC Super Hero Girls, Big Hero 6 and numerous other animated projects.
Will began his career in 1986 on stage and in numerous commercials. In 1988 he started as a co-host for Nickelodeon’s Don’t Just Sit There which lasted for three seasons. From 1993-2000, he took Eric Matthews from high school through college on the smash it Boy Meets World. During filming Boy, Will also starred in many classic movies.
Will is also a prolific VO actor having done hundreds of animated projects over his almost 30 year career in animation. Starting in the mid-nineties he took up the mantle of Batman for a new generation in the now iconic Batman Beyond.
Once the youngest freelance writer in the history of Disney, Will is also a successful screenwriter having sold his first screenplay at the age of 19. He has written episodes of ThunderCats, Girl Meets World, Transformers: Robots in Disguise; and Teen Titan Go!. In addition to guest-starring in the first campaign featured on the cult hit Critical Role, Will has also served as host of the series Painter’s Guild for the online network Geek&Sundry and Mini Primetime on the Critical Role TH-cam Channel.

I met him by chance on a bus after New York Comic Con way back in 2011. I was able to tell him how much he had an impact on my childhood as a Batman fan. He was the kindest person ever. I will absolutely miss him. May he rest in peace.
I can't believe it. This video was only 7 months ago and he looked very fine here and now he's gone. Death keeps giving us awful surprises at the worst time. May he rest in paradise. I hope you two had very fun at this interview.
This interview is easily one of the best ones with him; just UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH.......This hurts my nerd heart so bad. But the I AM THE NIGHT episode (just his soliloquy with Robin) is easily why Conroy will always be Batman to most of us.

Kevin Conroy is the definitive Batman, he gave a tremendous performance as The Dark Knight and he will be greatly missed 🖤🦇🌃🫡
I am absolutely devastated by his passing. His work in the BTAS, Justice League, and the Arkham games all had huge impacts on my life. It got me through so many tough moments. Rest in peace to my, no OUR BATMAN. Thank you, Kevin.

Andrea Romano really deserves a ton of props. You can't hear Batman as anyone else, there's obviously other interpretations but none of them come close for me. Even guest characters like Ted Levine as Sinestro, Jeffrey Combs as The Question, Michael Ironside as Darkseid, she has an incredible talent for choosing the best voice to match the character.
She and so many of the people in this world deserve so much credit, they're just so frikkin talented!
She's the Queen for DCAU.
Him as Batman, Hamill as Joker, Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor, these are the voices that I will always hear when I read the comics. Kevin will always be Batman, and may he rest in peace

I love Mr. Conroy so much. I purchased a Cameo, and asked him if he had any advice for writing a book. Instead of a very nice 2 minute, quick sound byte... I got a 6 and a half minute master class. He is so gracious, so kind, and just a treasure. Thank you both so much for interviewing him!!!

Wow!!! I totally agree! I was at a Comic Con in 2016, I waited in line to meet him and they were getting to close his panel for his break but he told the rep that he wanted to meet me when it was my turn. I got a chance to ask him how he liked the city and everything.....I was super Happy to meet him. He is the best!

Every time I read a Batman in comic books I hear Kevin’s voice. My family and friends say the same.
RIP Kevin Conroy. When I was 11, I would constantly watch BTAS with my dad and still do to this day. We love his performances and we consider him the greatest Batman and we were devastated to learn about his passing. We watched our favourite episodes of BTAS today to honour him.
Batman Beyond is still my favorite batman series of all time with Terry as probably my second favorite batman, next to Kevin's in the original animated series.

Matt Mercer has mentioned how he was in a similar position (as a new/first time talent) as Will was when they were in ThunderCats together, and he mentioned how Will really took him under his wing and helped Matt grow more confident in his ability and skill as a VOA, and I wonder if that's because Kevin Conroy did much the same for Will during Batman Beyond, when Will was still new to the art.
I'm sure both Kevin and Andrea Romano were helpful on that front.
I'm sad that Romano is now retired from Voice Direction because of her failing eyesight.

Any time I read a Batman comic, I hear his voice! Same goes for Mark Hamill and Tara Strong with Joker and Harley. They truly revolutionized these characters! And I honestly forget that Will voiced Terry McGinness! This was so awesome! Batman, Batman Beyond, and Kim Possible all in one room!!

Kevin is really awesome, I got a 5 minute Cameo from him last year for my birthday, it was very special! And he said some of the same things he said in this podcast about Bruce/Batman as a character. to me he will always be the best Batman. And Kevin is definitely a great singer, I remember the Justice League Unlimited episode "This little piggy" where he had to sing to save Diana/Wonder Woman who got turned into a pig by Circe, so good! Watching this in 2024, and I still miss Kevin. I really wanted to meet the guy. He was my first Batman when I was a kid. I had the first five episodes of BTAS growing up, though I never knew much or anything about voice acting.

Everytime an episode ends on Batman TAS and Batman Beyond, I always see the name of Andrea Romano voice director. She was surprised that she has a huge fan base. Kevin Conroy on both the Batman animated series and Batman Beyond was great. Greatest of all time Batman!!
Kevin Conroy always will be the best voice of Batman. Every time I read the comics when I see Batman speak, I hear his voice doing the character. Even the comic when Spider-Man and Batman first meet, and I hear Conroy and Yuri Lowenthal.
My childhood hero from the 90s and got to meet him at NYCC 2015 which was awesome. He is Bruce Wayne and Batman. When he says Batman is like Hamlet it's the perfect way to describe the character. Also the name Bruce Wayne is derived from two generals: Robert the Bruce and Mad Anthony Wayne. What so great is that we are going to be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series this September 2022. Still all time favorite episodes are Perchance of Dream, Heart of Ice, Two-Face Parts 1 and 2, Robin's Reckoning Parts 1 and 2, Beware The Gray Ghost, Almost Got 'Im, The Laughing Fish, I am The Night, It's Never Too Late, Joker's Favor, Paging the Crime Doctor, Joker's Wild, Harley's Holiday, Harleyquinade, His Silicon Soul, Mad as a Hatter, Trial and the list just goes on and on because it's really hard to choose your favorite episodes because the writing for each of them is so freakin good and the voice cast with the likes of John Vernon, Ron Perlman, Harry Hamlin, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Richard Moll, Loren Lester, Adam West, Melissa Gilbert, Adrianne Barbeau, Robert Costanzo, Michael Ansara, Bob Hastings, Joseph Campanella, Diane Muldur, Mark Hamill, Michael Ansara, Henry Polic II, Roddy McDowall etc., made the show by giving it a serialize drama storyline.
Nice to see another reunion between

'This Little Piggy' is my All Time Favourite Batman focused story and the main reason why Kevin Conroy is my Favourite voice for Batman.
I would love to hear Kevin Conroy doing voicework in a Marvel Animated series. He would be a great fit as Galactus in a Fantastic Four animated series.

I still believe that Kevin Conroy should’ve made a guest appearance on “The O.C.” as a security guard who lets the leads in and later breaks up a fight with them and several other patrons at a nightclub.
Will Jason Marsden ever be on this show? I'm sure he and Will can talk for hours. I'm loving the podcast so far. I hope we get some more BTS of boy meets world, even stevens or Kim possible.

God that’s what I want more than anything. Hear all the time how they’re best friends, there’s very little footage of them outside of Boy Meets World and I think short film or something they did. I wanna hear em talk, two very funny and witty dudes (who DO sound very much alike). Hell, I even remember for Batman Beyond commercials for Kids WB they would have Jason voice Terry McGinnis for them. It would be dope to see them on panel together or something

When Will was talking about Return of The Joker, it made me think that his performance really made that movie. To think that he was shoulder to shoulder with Mark Hammill and Kevin Conroy, must have been massively intimidating, and he still delivered a world class performance.
Thank you so much for this! I am 100% serious when I say that Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond and Kim Possible were my favorite TV shows as I was growing up! I watched them repeatedly! Once again, thank you so much for this!!

Thank you Kevin, no one else was able to bring Batman to life the way you could. No matter the project, if Kevin was in it, I’d watch it. I still remember having my parents rent Batman: Mask of the Phantasm every week, and watching it in a dark room at my grandparents house. It’s one of my fondest memories. Kevin Conroy inspired me to try voice acting myself, and I hope that I can be half the artist that Kevin was. Thanks Kevin, thanks Batman.

I have been listening to dozens of podcasts for well over a decade and this is easily one of the best episodes I've ever listened to. Kevin IS my Batman and that show made me the nerd I am today.

I’ve been blessed enough to have had the chance to meet my personal trinity of Batman:
Kevin Conroy, Adam West, and Will Friedle. All three were some of the most fun, charming, and enjoyable people to get to meet in person. They all were so excited to meet fans and truly enjoyed their experience. Once saw Kevin stand up on a chair in the middle of a busy con in Dallas and yell out “I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!” Such an amazing human being.
I always love when Kevin Conroy sounds identical to Batman while speaking randomly. The Venture Bros creators say they would get so excited when did that.

Oh my god, I'm finally checking out the podcast and I love it! I hate that I didn't tune in sooner. I'm bouncing around between episodes and I have to say, it was a tough call, but this has been my favorite episode. Batman The Animated Series was a HUGE part of my childhood, so it was great to hear about the show and more from the man, the myth, the legend that is Kevin Conroy. It was really funny to see Will fanboy right off the bat, then see Christy gradually start to fangirl, too. Great stuff!!

Ugh Kevin Conroys passing has been behind devasting to so many of us I cannot imagine how Will must have been after working with him for so long.
I need to go to a convention and tell Will how much he means to so many millennials! I was absolutely in the demo for boy meets world and my date with the presidents daughter AND Batman beyond and his subsequent works in the DCU!!! Your work has been just as iconic in my life as Kevin Conroy’s and as a consumer/watcher to have seen your switch over to VO has been amazing! You have so much to be proud of!

A great actor doesn’t just bring a character to life; they find a way to embody their qualities. They exaggerate them in an organic way to get the audience to think to themselves, “I want to be like this,” or “I won’t be like that.”
Kevin will always be Batman, always a legend.
I didn’t know the actor that voiced Ron Stoppable, Voiced Terry in Batman Beyond, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is one of my favorite superhero animated movies.
I think my most fondest memories of KC was him as The Dark Knight in “Mask of the Phantasm” not to mention it was the first time I was exposed to Hamil’s voice as The Joker which was terrifying as a kid.
Absolutely, I am not an intense fan of animation but I watch and enjoy it.
This podcast is incredible and learning the stuff going on around animation is great.

I had just checked out this episode a week ago and now we've lost him and I'm sobbing.
The question that Will asked about "Do you know of any other actor's who's played a character for a long period of time?" I know one and that was Caroll Spinney who played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch for 50 years. I know that he's passed on but since 1969 is a LONG time in playing a certain character. That's who I think of.

That was fucking awesome!! He my Batman when I'm reading a graphic novel. Kevin is forever Batman like Mark is forever the Joker. I watch this whole show and i didn't want it to end. Wil you're a great Terry McGinnis Batman. I love every minute of this.

I think Kevin's way of being taught "acting" is a lot more fluid (and saner) than the technique of going "method". I dunno about anybody else, but I have yet to hear of current "method" actors/actresses that didn't come out of each character portrayal with a few LESS screws loose. The way he's trained speaks for itself, despite being the "de facto" Batman voice, he knows how to separate himself from *all* of the characters he's portrayed over the years. This is why, other than Keaton, that nobody else can be that iconic when it comes to the duality of Bruce Wayne and Batman by voice delivery alone.
He's also right, by the way - creating and BECOMING the character will always bring out a more convincing portrayal than being yourself as that character.
I am so glad that y'all were able to get Kevin Conroy before he unfortunately passed away a couple years ago. He is my favorite Batman. I love the Arkham games. If they make anymore Batman games it's not gonna be the same anymore. I recently just finished Gotham Knights and the few scenes that Batman/Bruce Wayne felt like they were missing something.
