    Kevin Conroy (Batman Beyond, Justice League) joins me this week to share how he’s battled with anxiety throughout his life, stemming from a harsh upbringing in a combative household that no child should be raised in. Kevin goes on to talk about his different family dynamics and the impact that his abusive, alcoholic father had on his future. We also get into Kevin’s evolution in acting from Juilliard to Batman, his experience living with the one and only Robin Williams, and his thoughts on Batman reprisals in Crisis on Infinite Earths.

    It's sad that Kevin's right- someone like him as a young relatively unknown actor at the time would never be cast in such a role like Batman today. It is all about star power. But partly because of that, I feel like running into someone like Kevin Conroy, it would have a huge emotional impact on me because he just is that character- he embodies Batman, unlike an actual actor you see portray Bruce Wayne in a movie. As humans, I think we relate and connect far more with a voice than an image, and people like Rosenbaum, LaMarr, or Conroy can have this profound connection with an audience because of it.

      @@abramsullivan7764 I'm not gonna compare it to what his husband, family and friends must be going through. But I woke up, saw the news and went into shock. Never had the pleasure of meeting him at a con or anything like that, yet I still get numb whenever I see him pop up on my TH-cam feed. He did more things that has mattered to people, from children to adults with his voice alone, than most do in their life time. Whenever I got beat up as a kid I could take one of the many tapes I'd use to record episodes and I'd feel safe.
      It's so unfair, we have literal monsters in the world who manage to squeak by and survive, only for us to lose not just great talent. But by every metric and account, a genuinely beyond good and kind human being.
      One amazing story was during 9/11. He didn't want to bring attention to himself but wanted to help in any way that he could. So he worked in the kitchen at one of the places that was filled with people who'd been working after the towers fell for god knows how many hours and was going back. Suddenly someone recognized his voice before recognizing his face and who he was. Started yelling who was serving them, people thinking it was a joke just dismissed it until Conroy started to perform and that crowded, dirty, dusted, exhausted room that literally on rotation had gone through blood, sweat, and tear got filled with joy and excitement. A small but much needed reprieve from all the horror they'd seen was able to lift the spirits of the people there. Hearing their hero praising these unsung heroes for their selfless efforts of being there on the ground.

Hes always told me "I need an agent, i'd get tons of jobs even if its online" especially now you know? But yeah my dream is to get a pro gig, bigger. Kevin's memory of his father's last days really got to me. It must have been such an experience to come to terms with his father as a cautionary tale, and learn not to hate him for what he did to his mother, his siblings, and him. It takes such a strength of spirit to work through that. Kevin died too young, and cancer is not fair, but truly hope it felt like a victory to die in a room with a husband who loved him, knowing he'd be celebrated by colleagues who revered him, unlike his father who had such an ignominious end.

    But also for the kind of person he was, and how he brought so much light into the life of others by fighting through his own darkness.

    When Michael said that he was almost in tears listening to Kevin describe his father's final days, I was too. My father was very abusive to me when I was young and I grew up in a difficult home like Kevin. What Kevin doesn't know is that he was my hero when I was a kid. I grew up watching Batman the Animated Series and he was who I wanted to be like. Batman was my role model. It is so surreal to find, after all these years, that Batman and I had something in common after all. Thank you for sharing that with me Kevin.

    • @vanmoody
      @vanmoody 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Friend, usually when people hurt others it is because they are hurting too. Kevin's father grew up in Hells Kitchen. That was a rough place back in the day. We will probably never know everything he saw and went through. He could not handle it and took it out on his family and really he took it out on himself. I'm sorry your Dad was abusive. Do you know if he was abused by his father or mother? Was he abused by somebody else as a child? It might tell you at least partly why he did what he did. Now what your role is today is to not repeat the cycle. If God allows you to have a family then make sure you refuse to abuse them like you were. Break that cycle.

Him staying with his dad until his last moments although he was the cause of Kevin's terrible childhood was something I could see batman do. Never giving up on people and believing in the good side of your loved ones. At the same time the story of Kevin reminds me of one of the most iconic scenes of Batman in which he stays with ace until her death. I wonder if the writes drew direct inspiration from Kevins life.
