  • Mazda Xedos 9 - Top Gear 1993 The Mazda Xedos is a range of executive cars that were launched by Japanese manufacturer Mazda in 1992.
The original model was the Mazda Xedos 6, which was similar in size and in engine to the BMW 3 Series. The Xedos 6 has two types of engines - 24 valve V6 @ 144 hp named KF and 16 valve L4 @ 107 hp named B6. In 1994, Xedos Mazda renewed the Xedos 6 model with changes in engine ecological standards and body exterior.
The Xedos 6 was marketed as the Eunos 500 in Japan and Australia. This vehicle was not sold in the United States and Canada. The total quantity of Xedos 6 and Eunos 500 manufactured is 72101.
By 1994, there was a larger model called the Mazda Xedos 9, which was of a similar size to the BMW 5 Series. The Xedos 9 was marketed as the Eunos 800 in Japan and Australia, and as the Mazda Millenia in the United States.
Neither version of the Xedos was popular, and a facelift in 1998 did little to improve matters. Production ceased in 2000.

My dad bought a new Xedos 6 2.0 V6 in 1992 - all kids at my German school (close to where Mercedes cars are made) went CRAZY and thought it was magical. Mind you, I was 6 and there was no internet. The engine was so quiet, the design still is Alfa-esque and the equipment was outstanding. As a replacement my dad bought a Lexus as there was no successor.

Same with our 2003 Camry. A pretty hot attentionwhore in our class complimented me about the car since day 1. If only she knew what a POS it was (except it had air conditioning).
Your case is however understandable. Mercedes-Benz yet have to produce one single appealing automobile to this day.

  • @RoadCone411
    @RoadCone411 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

This car was originally going to get an entirely new badge in the USA: Amati. A made-up, vaguely posh Italian-sounding name, Amati would have been Mazda's Lexus/Infiniti/Acura but after crunching the numbers, they came to the conclusion it costs a lot to get a new badge on the road, especially a luxury one. Instead, it came to the USA as the Mazda Millenia and competed in the sort of near-luxury market, alongside the Toyota Cressida/Avalon, Nissan Maxima, Mitsubishi Diamante and, at the top end, various entry level vehicles from the aforementioned Japanese luxury marques. Still, with its silky engine, tidy styling, comfortable cabin and reputation for good reliability, it did make some fans - just not enough of them. The car was gone within a decade and was not replaced in Mazda's lineup, ending a long line of 929s/Millenia.
Despite Chris Goffey's dirty trouser bottoms and claims the car somehow attracted dirt, this was a pretty decent car that probably deserved better sales...was that really the worst thing he could find to complain about?

I bought a used 2.5 Xedos 9 Auto in 1999 from the main agent in Warrington. It was totally anonymous, being in grey metallic and grey interior. However it was much cheaper than the equivalent BMW, was really reliable and I took the car from just over 40k miles to 128k without anything serious going wrong at all until my final year of ownership when the driver door electric window failed, and also a push switch on the dash. I managed to get parts from a breaker on the internet, as parts from Mazda dealers were outrageously costly, (yeah, Mazda obviously learnt at least something from the Germans !). However what made me finally off-load the car was rust, starting in the rear wheel arches. The Japanese are notoriously bad at rust proofing, the MX5 being another example. Its replacement was a Rover 75 2.5 Auto, that was absolutely sublime and took us all round Europe, but that's another story.

A mate of mine has a 2.3 version of the 9 and loves it. We both love that it’s not the usual German marques, it’s smooth ride and great handling. When Mazda launched Xedos as a brand in the UK, I was excited to see a new brand but alas it only lasted a few years. I suppose Mazda working to move upmarket themselves takes them in the same direction but with an established brand rather than a new one.

Had a JDM Xedos 9 for 6 years. It was the absolute bottom spec with a 2 litre engine (it wasn't sold with this in Europe afaik) and cloth seats, but it was still a really nice, smooth car to drive. You'd easily creep up to 140 - 150 km/h on the motorway without realising it cos it was so quiet.
Parted with it cos of the cost of fuel and road tax on it. Occasionally I think I should've stuck it out for another year or so until I was in a better position to deal with the cost.

i have no experience with this model but i do have some experience with the 1991-1995 Mazda 626 hatchback. Also known as the (626, mk4).
Always kind of felt like the Xedos was the slightly upscale version of the 626. But i always kind of liked the 626 its looks a little better.
Would still like to experience a Xedos though, but they're pretty hard to find now a days specially in a decent shape. A lot of them seem to rust away unfortunately.

It was such a good car and deserved to succeed, but it didnt, which I think is a shame.
It was well appointed, with plenty of comfort, good specification and equipment levels, and a pleasant driving experience.
I would've made it more competitive with additional frugal diesel engines, plus an long wheelbase estate version with extra boot head and legroom for the most fastidious business executive, company rep, and family man who wants something more practical and useful.
A fuel thirsty V6 petrol engine and automatic transmission only choices make it an expensive proposition to run if you regularly cover long distances, because am automatic only proposition drinks petrol like there's no tomorrow.
