The Mercury program was over. Four years later, astronaut Gus Grissom was killed, along with astronauts White and Chaffee, when fire swept through their Apollo capsule. But on that glorious day in May 1963, Gordo Cooper went higher, farther, and faster than any other American - 22 complete orbits around the world; he was the last American ever to go into space alone. And for a brief moment, Gordo Cooper became the greatest pilot anyone had ever seen.

@@MrMarkus49 You're lookin' at him. They don't show it in the movie, but Gordo absolutely showed the right stuff during his flight. All of the automatic systems in his capsule shorted out, and he had to line it up for reentry and fire the retros manually. He landed closer to the recovery carrier than any of the Mercury flights.

Well, I loved the movie, but there were many inaccuracies. Chuck Yeager’s X-1 supersonic flight was not his first like the movie implies, as he flew many flights in the X-1 before breaking the sound barrier. The astronauts arguing with Werner Von Braun and his team about the space capsule never happened because Von Braun’s team was in charge of the booster rocket only. And when Jack Ridley and the airman are driving out into to try and find Yeager after he crashed would have been impossible because Jack Ridley was killed in an air crash 6 years before. So while they seem to imply it was Gus Grissom’s fault his space capsule sank, they didn’t really come right out and say it. Of course years later Gus was completely cleared when they did find Liberty Bell 7 and it’s hatch on the ocean floor and were able to find out it was indeed a malfunction of the hatch.

Storytelling requires conflict, so a lot of that I’m fine with.. The Grissom thing was started by Tom Wolfe, himself, and was detailed in the book.. The problem was Grissom was lead pilot for both the Gemini and Apollo programs, so IMO Wolfe should’ve came to the obvious conclusion, which is NASA obviously cleared him in the incident.. That was unfortunate..

It is beyond perfect and while I am not an American, I too could easily join in with my total enjoyment of the how, the why, and the when of all of this. In May 1963, in Canada, I was just getting ready to finish Grade 13 and can honestly say that for almost all of the flights leading up to this one, I had my ear tuned to the radio whilst doing my homework or any other activity. This movie just captures the essence of what it means to put oneself out over the abyss and take whatever may come. But again, the music was for me, the icing on the cake at the end of this movie. I love this movie. But the ending always enrages me. The entire movie is about Pilots! Why pilots are necessary. Man vs machine. And then they don't show the entirety of Cooper's flight... WHY!?!?! For those not aware, things went horrifically wrong on Mercury 9. On the 19th Orbit there was a massive short circuit. All of the automated attitude control and navigation systems failed. Cooper lost most of his instruments and the capsule was no longer on autopilot. He had to manually fly his spacecraft home. He drew a horizon line on the window. Put his watch up next to it where he could see the second hand. And he flew his ship home by manually firing the thrusters and timing how long he fired them. He hands on manually piloted a perfect re-entry and touched down closer to the Carrier than just about anybody. Just about within swimming distance of it. Man was better than Machine. And he was the best pilot there ever was that day.

No CGI. All real effects. Better than most tentpole films out there today. Seen it at least 25 times.

I always think this movie managed to strike perfect balance between heroism/the myth of the hero and reality. Plus it didn't take itself too seriously and become ponderous.

Always give your best, never get discouraged, never be petty; always remember, others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.

Important words.. Nixon was a master politician.. Tough, smart, willing to do whatever it takes.. And it consumed him in the end.. I always admired this moment of clarity from him..
