This is the middle brother of the Marshall Origin series amps. The Origin 20 features a 10" speaker and 20 watts of power in a full-valve/tube guitar combo amplifier.

Sounds fantastic! This is the first demo that I can really hear the character of this amp, and I've heard a dozen demos. I've been on the fence, but I believe that this demo has firmly pushed me into the pro side. I look forward to hear your review of the 50!
The 20 sounds so much better than the 5, even on low power mode it was sounding better. It'd be interesting to hear how the combo compares to the head version with a 12" speaker cab if you can arrange something with Sky Music.

Oh, man, those two amps would sound really nice in stereo. I LOVE the full-range scooped clean of the v22. Would pair really well with and Origin 20.
"NoT LoUd EnOuGh To GiG wItH" LOL, seriously? Try taking it off the 0.5W setting and put it in the High Power 20w setting then report back to us... If that isn't loud enough then you should be playing stadiums. Also, not sure why you killed all the top end and turned the gain up, it isn't a DSL. Brett Kingman has the best review of this amp.
"As clean as it is gonna get" with the OD boost on and at 12. smh. I like your reviews, Shane, but for crying out loud do some clean baseline for those of us who don't go crazy with the gain all the time.
To be fair, most people playing through Marshalls for clean tone. Fender Blackface amps exist for a reason.
@@Ironworthstriking I just played this amp at GC last weekend and it has beautiful cleans, warm & harmonically rich but with zero breakup. Unless my eyes are deceiving me, the gain knob is pulled out (i.e., boost is on) for the "clean as it's gonna get" segment, which is kind of ?!?. Whether that's true or not, I can attest that the 20C does get a LOT cleaner than that, and at pretty robust volume levels.
The Tele sounds absolutely awesome through the Origin , the PRS sounded pants.

I plugged my 20w combo to a 1960AHW and it was loud even on low volume, easy gigging loudness
just curious why you would do a video to evaluate if a 20 watt is 'better' than a 5-watt of the exact same model? I would love to see a more relevant review of the ORIGIN 20 versus the DSL 20 (I searched your channel to see if you've done this comparison yet but didn't see it) I do LOVE your channel though man, so keep up the great content!!!
Believe me old school amps we're not that great. There was great players that made them great.
lollll old amps were and are the greatest of all time...just plug into any 50s fender tweed old marshall vox etc.

The Friedman amps, 65 amps,two rock,carr amps and many others blow those old amps away.
Mesa Boogie changed everything. They were the first modern era amplifier.

Hello Shane from the uk. I bought the 20 watt head. I am running it with a single 12" Vintage 30 speaker cab. Its plenty loud for gigs. I compared the combo to the head and the extra speaker size of the 12" compared to the cpmbo's !0" speaker makes a massive difference.
Absolutely man. 12" speakers always kill a 10" one. Cabinet size makes a massive difference as well. I look forward to trying the head at some point through a 4x12 :-)
Many of these small combos sound so much better through larger cabinets. Perhaps future demos through a 2x12 or even those cheap 4x12’s no one wants?
jjulch yes they do. I just bought the orange rocker 15 and i use the internal speaker along with a 12" v30. Finally an orange amp with no fizz.
@@kevinstuart5694 Dude how do you use the speaker in the combo WITH an external speaker. I can't figure it out I want to run a combo with a cabinet but still have the amp playing through the speaker in the combo too at the same time.
Another great review. I thought the combo with 10" sounded great, but I'm still thinking of buying an O20 head (when they become available in NZ). Two reasons; 1) I want the controls to the front, not on top and 2) I have a slope front 2x12 waiting for it :-).

I am very happy with my head 20 w. I use it on a CAB ORANGE PPC112. Use at home. I had to spend a little time on the EQ to have good tones. This amp is too bright with the defaut setting. For my taste, 25% of presence, 25% of tilt, 40% of treeble, 60/70% of bass, medium at twelve.
Very good results with my guitars (2 strats, 1 telecaster, 1 gibson SG) and pedals. I was surprised by my Telecaster Elite with its noiseless pickups, it goes perfectly with this amp. With the attenuator, this amp can be used at home without any problem in the low or middle position. I dont plan to gig with, but i think the 50w ll be the right choice for that. This 20w is not a beast in clean mode. Or maybe with a larger cab it should do the work.
I wish they would have made the 20w in a 1x12 instead of 1x10. Some one on a video asked a Marshall rep why they didn't and he straight up said "We did that so you'll have to buy the 50w to get the 12"

Did you get the 20 watt head and a cab? I'm thinking about getting that and using a greenback, hopefully I can get some good tones at low ish volume

@@jorgetome7089 Actually I got it back. I sold the Origin, I sold the AC-15. I love my tiny terror! I always run my pedals on the front of the amp. I'm using low gain tubes for more headroom.

It has a set of 8ohm speaker outputs to hook to some 4x12 cabinets. don't necessarily need to mic it. I just bought one yesterday and its the best amp I've ever owned so far. still learning how to dial it in right how I want it.
Great review! Sounds way better than it’s little brother. The cabinet looks pretty big to only have one 10 inch speaker to me, no? 😎👍🏻

This is an amp to seriously look at....the head with a 12" cab would be an option too.
Sounds great. Night and day compared to the 5. I'm waiting till the autumn to upgrade my DSL 5 which has a 12" stuffed in it. Either DSL40 or one of the bigger Origins. You did a good job showing the 20 can create a full bodied warm and even raunchy tone. And I really like that you can drop the power down to such a low level. Would be cool to see how well the DSL40 plays as a bedroom amp compared to the origins. I mostly play at home and my DSL5 has quite a loud noise floor for what it is.
Adrian Tysoe Yeah im wondering if the 40c is a good Bedroom/Living room amp too. Im between dsl 20 dsl40c origin20.
I had a DSL 20 and it's was pretty loud in low power mode. Too loud for the volume I needed. Don't bother with the headphone out either it was horrible.
Yeah. That's why I'm leaning towards the 40CR. It has master volumes and a decent 12" speaker compared to the other models. I also like the idea of softube Cab emulated out for quick and dirty recording without a mic. It's a bit of a price hike, but I might not need more than one amp if I pick wisely.

I love your vids. Thanks. I was surprised by your guitar choice. Here in the future (2024) my Tele has single coils. I tried out the Amp and get no break up at all. It still sounded lovely and I usually use pedals anyway. I'm on the fence.

The great thing about the origin series is that it forces you to really work at learning how to get the sounds you want by learning how to play properly. After 40 years of trying I am sure I must be nearly there ! Seriously why buy a Marshall with anything less than 100 Watts ?
Agreed (although I never overpowered my drummer !) - I said that with tongue very firmly in cheek. Like most guitar players I do home use only these days (probably 30+ years since I used a 100 watt Marshall) so even my 30 watt MG DFX combo is banned from the house and I have to make do with a Rowland micro cube most of the time :) . As we get older we are just left with our dreams.
Same here! Sold my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe because, even at 40 watts, it was scaring all the animals and children in the neighborhood! 😵💫. At 65 years of age, I have the Origin 20C and it is just loud enough that my nearly deaf ears can still hear it! 😁. Seriously, it is a really nice amp and plays well with pedals.
Wish amp companies would stop using 10" speakers especially in tube amps considering the cost. Sure some like 10" but I think the majority prefer a 12" even on 1watt amps.
I'm sure they know it sounds better with a 12-inch speaker. But they want you to buy the more expensive 50 watt. What other reason could there be. just my thoughts.
I think a lot of it has to do with the speaker / cabinet. The origin combo 5W and 20W have speakers smaller than 12" (which 12" is kind of the "standard"). Combine that with the "tilt" and presence control, and they might be too trebly / lacking in bass. But if you do the 50W 1x12 or buy the 20W head and at least a 1x12 cabinet (I have a 1x12 celestion greenback cab) then it might be better.
The brand new 10 inch speaker will sound much better when its "well played - broken in ".
I don't know that the speaker diameter is the issue. The best sound I can get out of my new DSL20HR head , VHT Special 6 Ultra, Laney 15 watt Cub head B52 60 watt etc is running them into 2 cabinets loaded with the Jensen 10" Alnico P10R speakers. Sadly, these amps don't sound anywhere as good into my large cabinet with Weber and Eminence speakers. So tone quality not size? I have read Marshall put a fairly crap model Celestion in the new DSL20CR, so that makes me wonder why?
On a side note, my GF bought me the Katana 50 that arrived yesterday. After much knob tweaking, I'm loving this amp! Sadly the instructions explain NOTHING useful on how to install the new sounds from their tone editor, Shane, I'd love to see you compare some of these small combos with the Katana. Cheers! I bought the 20 Watt Origin head. Tried it with several speaker/cab combinations. Decided to return it after two days. The amp was way too bright. Only with the tilt knob on 1 and treble and presence turned way back was it just ok. That’s not worth the money imho

Guitar ocd I try to share my honest opinion. I really wanted to like it because it looks awesome and has some cool features that make it much more useful than old Marshalls but sadly enough this just wasn’t for me.

Marcel dV I've got the 20 watt head too and same as yourself will send it back Monday, even played through a 12" speaker on the 20 watt setting it sounds like crap very fuzzy sounding not like a super lead or JTM(no AC / DC tones here with a Gibson SG). The only sound which is half acceptable was on the 3 watt setting and the 1/2 watt setting is not nice either. Total waste of money, absolute garbage. People been taken for a ride by Marshall. Just on a final note my 2017 Marshall DSL40c has got that Super lead / JTM tone I even played the newer DSL40r with the 2 extra master volumes and that amp is very mediocre as well

Hi Shane, loved the demo. Could you try the 20 combo through a 2x12 cab? As the 20 watt head with a 2x12 cab may be a better buy than the 50 watt combo.
Marshall website says its 20/3/.5 watts.
This is the review I have been waiting for!! It sounds good I am dissapointed they went with a 10" speaker though. How is the bass response compared to a Fender deluxe reverbish amp? Do you think at 20 watts this still punches in the blues Jr/ Princeton 15 watt class or does it move into the deluxe reverb 22ish watt class at all? Overdrive tones are great from the amp! Paul Ewing that's what I'm thinking. Not too worried about the cost as I am my back! The head and cab would be a great solution though. I saw the namm video and noticed that as well. Thanks for the advice!!
Paul Ewing I feel it for sure. I did that with a fender and and finally bought a 68 custom deluxe reverb brand spankin new and it was GREAT. However the 45 watt plexi clones that I TRULY want instead of this amp are just in another price level all together that is just too much right now. Wish Marshall would resissue a bluesbreaker that isn't 3500

The Origin 20 sounds way better than the Origin 5. It growls, gets very nice driven sounds and sounds great with the pedals. Now I'm a little confused on which to get, the Origin 20C, Origin 20H or the DSL20HR - they all sound so good.

Thx shane, really good. Far better than 5. I am going to get my 20 head today. I ll use it at home on my PPC112, should rock. It seems the attenuator is really good compare to my WEBER attenuator. Glad you like this 20C,, lol. The 50C ll be even better with the 12 and Heads with good cab should be awesome. I like this plexi tone so much. Great review, good work ! Damn man, your overdrive+whah tone at start is so great, 30sec of pure emotion, cant immagine with a 12 or a 4x12 !
Sure the 50 should do even better. 20w is ok actually for my home purpose. Have already many amps for live.
this amp goes well with that telli,, nice guitar ,, the low end does not hold together like the jtm 45 marshalls. you got some great sounds out of this amp.
I couldnt decide between this and the Artist Tweed 20c, so I bought both, thats all I will ever need, love this amp, but using the Celestion G12H 30W Anniversary model, what a difference in sound.
honestly sounds terrible but the demo is appreciated....maybe the 50w will be better but most the demos would make me thing this thing needs mods/tubes/speaker

Should have the delay and or reverb in the effects loop. All other pedals into the front of the amp.

I'm going to be buying the 20w head as soon as I find one in stock. If not I'll go for the DSL head. Both sound great to me, but I prefer the power output selections on the Origin, and it's alot cheaper too.

This is more of a review of how the Origin 20C takes pedals. But without a 12" speaker or decent clean tones this amp wouldn't be for me. Bassbreaker and Blues Jr sound better to my ears.
The 10" speaker don't feed the pussycat for me! Never heard an amp that didn't sound tons better after swapping a 10" speaker for a 12".

I love this amp, wow it does a beautiful clean sound and the overdrive is stunning. Tilt is a neat feature, can get the old plexi sound or a brighter modern sound

When i lisen around the 7 minute mark it seems like the amp has that hendrixy marshall sound. Definately sounds better then the 5 watt version.
It definitely sounds much better than the 5W, but there's still something that's "off" about it I can't put my finger on - Might be the 10" speaker. Be interesting to run an ext out to a bigger speaker. Maybe the 50W will surprise?

I’m leading towards a handwired Vox... you get what you pay for.
I had the vox, sold it after a few months. Wasn't for me.. It all depends on what sound people are after, not really 'what is good or bad" thing
But why no dedicated 1 12" Marshall cab?
Great demo! I'm wondering if it uses 20 watts on all three power settings or is it actually more 'efficient' on lower settings. I use a torpedo reload on my 50w but always feel like I'm abusing the amp or wasting tube life or jacking up my electric bill lol
If you are considering this amp watch the andertons or brett Kingmans videos they dial it in properly
I have one of these and I have to say that it didn’t come through on my phone sounding anywhere near as good as it does in person. I usually use a Gibson or Gretsch humbucker type guitar with it and it sounds great. Kinda have to mind the bass level a bit so it doesn’t flub out at high volume. I also don’t like it as much with single coil pickups as my Fender amps.
What’s the origin 20 like compared to a blues jr?
Greetings, so for home use only, would you recommend the Origin 20W combo or the Blues Jr IV you demoed recently? Know they are different kind of sounds, but figure one can always use a Marshall in a box pedal for the Fender. Cheers.
I've got both. I use the blues Jr for gigs regularly. It is small and tavels easily but can still be miked for gigs. The Marshall is just as loud, maybe next gig I'll try that one.
Which amp would you prefer - the dsl40 or the origin 20?
I prefer the Origin 20 , Nice "Vintage" Marshall edge of breakup sound - Simple - Light - Portable - and no biasing required when Tube change is needed .

Orgin sounds like vintage plexi, dsl sound like jvm2000 ...
Some say play with less gain.I say Max gain almost any amp can achieve clean sounds.
I'm not sure if the head is supposed to be different, but my 20 Watt Origin head at the lowest wattage setting cranked is too loud for my bedroom. I thought we my kid sleeping next store I could try and crank it on the lowest wattage. Nope. It was way too loud. The full power setting is crazy loud in the room. It's way loud enough for a hard hitting drummer. My issue is I cannot crank it on low wattage mode to get that overdriven Marshall tone, it's too loud. So I have to back it off and use pedals to get more drive. It sounds great but even in the lowest setting it's just too loud cranked for a bedroom. Not sure if the head is supposed to be that way, or mine is broken.
I wish they would use an 8ohm speaker output tap off the transformer. 16 always sounds a bit fizzy to me.
I love the vintage look and style of the origin . But I heard the Marshall CL amp and it seems to have more versatility and punch than the origin. I like the look better iof the origin. I know you should not base your choice on asthetics, but I can't make up my mind.
I think this would be better with a 12" speaker. might be nice to do a comparison with the head and a 12 in a cab and this, .

I def like this one better than the Origin 5. I was really wanting to pick one of these up but after watching vids I think I'll stay with the BassBreaker15. The Origins just sound a bit muffled to me, in vids anyways. I was hoping for a bit more early 70s AC/DC-ish tone I guess.
How thoughtful they desiged in a channel to catch spilled beer on the top of the amp. Hope that's on the head as well. ; ) No really... I've always... ALWAYS wanted a plexi. sigh... Marshall... ur kill'in me.

Almost gets so dirty it sounds like a fuzz pedal. Still, much better than the 5w. I'd bet the 20w head would sound great through a big cab.
I am just not sold on the new dsl and origin series. I don't think the brand is for me. The upper end models are too powerful for me to consider and the models I have played don't gel with me. I do have an mg50cfx in my collection and for what it is versus the price I'm content.
I agree the import Marshall sound weak. The ones made in the UK have more muscle. But have to be turned up too loud so I understand the Dilemma.

The PRS gain sounds like it's muddy? Not clean enough in the cleans, especially on the Tele. It would be nice for that light gain stuff, but I will have to pass on this one. Wonder how the Tele would sound through a compressor on this?
I've got the new Marshall DSL 20h, running it through my Traynor Dark Horse cab with Celestion Greenback 12". Has the same tubes as the 20watt Origin: ECC83 x3 & EL34 x2. Love to hear a comparison!
Btw, I use my Dark Horse 15watt on its American (Fender) setting for clean recording, rather than the Marshall.
Why would they put the jacks underneath like that. Speally being a valve amp tipping it back. Blackstar did the same. Who ever designed it must of been drunk
