    I really disapprove of the plastic bottle switch. A big part of why I bought them was the glass bottle, it was a very tactile aspect of the brand. Luckily you can still (sometimes) by the cases with glass bottles.

      That can come down to a matter of preference, I actually think it's a major advantage to give them a chance over other similar products, I often stick a bottle of some type of soda or Brisk (Which was briefly hinted at with mention of Lipton entering the premade iced tea market) in the little side compartment things in my backpack, and I tend to avoid glass bottles because sometimes the bottles can fall out and I'd rather have a plastic bottle that I can rely on not to shatter in the event it falls.

    When I was younger (teens) my buddies and I drank a lot of Snapple. We kept our caps and when we got together you had to have a Snapple cap on you, otherwise somebody could "snapple check" you by pulling their cap out and popping it. If you didnt have a cap on you when they called you, you owed them a snapple, if you did theyd owe you a snapple. Was a fun game. I still have my original snapple cap from those days.

      there's only so much the average person can do to keep trash off the planet, or burning coal from power plants powering electric cars.
      as far as im concerned, we've done our part, now we're just waiting for those greedy big companies to also do the same.

    • @FedericoLiuYang
      @FedericoLiuYang 5 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      VeryCherryBerry Actually, plastic bottles are more environmental friendly. In the US they don’t recycle glass anymore, because it cost more to recycle than to make one from scratch, therefore most of the glass are shredded and used as landfill cover. Plastic in the other hand, can be recycled much easy and actually turns a profit, plus many state introduced plastic bottle taxes so that people would be more likely to recycle it.

      "The company has never had any ties with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). When the company was being built up, Quaker businessmen were known for their honesty (truth is often considered a Quaker testimony). As someone who grew up in the New York metro area and remembers the rise of Snapple, I can tell you that under their original ownership Snapple was a very 'New York' product. The Snapple Lady worked because embodied the New York culture of the company. The reason she was dropped after the company's sale is that Quaker wasn't sure about her appeal in the rest of the country.

I was in the dominican rep. when I was like 8 and was complaining that I wanted juice but all that was available was soda, water, and snapple lemon tea. after the first sip I begged for a bottle every single day for months. Later on in highschool, a girl in my class would always walk in with a bottle of snapple peach iced tea. It smelled so good and I thought she looked cool with it lmao so I again developed an obsession for it and it hasn't gone away. I had a gallon of snapple peach in my fridge, 4 bottles of their green tea, and I recently bought four six pack cases (they were on sale, buy 2 get 2 😜). I think arizona is great too and I'll usually pick up a can or jug in place of it along with snapple but snapple is my favorite 😌

    The advertising campaign in the 1990s, including the Snapple Lady, made the brand seen like a small company that sold great products. I loved the brand because I felt like I was drinking something healthier than a soda and supporting an underdog. And then (presumably around the time of the Quaker Oats acquisition that I was unaware of until today), the brand changed. It became just another mass market beverage, the marketing stopped, and honestly I forgot about them. Today I was at Safeway looking for a non soda beverage in a non glass package for travel and was delighted to discover their glass packaging.
    Interesting "real fact" - one of their bottle caps said Caller ID was illegal in California and I wrote them to tell them I had Caller ID on my California home phone line. They wrote back, said they had gotten it from a book and hadn't fact checked it, and they would take that one out of circulation. It added to the feel of a simple, family run or small business brand with a great product.

    I still see it in grocery stores but I don't see many flavors. It was nice when it first came out and there were so many flavors. I remember Rush Limbaugh used to endorse it, they bought advertising with him, he would pop open a bottle on air and talk about how much he liked it, then apparently Snapple became "PC" and stopped advertising on his show, maybe it was after Quaker bought them, and I heard it really hurt their sales without that advertising. I don't know if you remember a product New York Seltzer, a carbonated flavored water, it came in tons of flavors. I remember them coming to campus in the late 80s promoting it. Never found out what happened with them. We'd love to see you do one on Books-A-Million and what happened with them, same with Borders Books and Music, and 9-Lives. 9-Lives used to be the only cat in town (pardon the pun) but now it's relegated to the cheap bottom shelf in stores with few varieties.

    So here in the Midwest and plains states (mostly, I think there were a few in CA) we've recently learned that Shopko - a big box store like Target or Kmart - is closing for good. It was a slow close and started with the news that their pharmacies were closing because the company is so far behind in paying their drug suppliers after years of trying to build themselves up as a major part of that convenience health market. It sounds like that was the one breeze that toppled the whole house of cards, and I'm finding the story fascinating. I actually live maybe two miles from the very first store in Green Bay, WI and maybe five miles from the corporate buildings in Ashwaubenon, WI, so we're being hit pretty hard here due to the closures. Last year's scramble for all of the local pharmacies to pick up Shopko's suddenly care-less customers alone was pretty spectacular to see. It may be worth a look for you.

    You may have overlooked the most important reason Snapple sales crashed after the Quaker Oats purchase. Snapple's first and most successful national advertising campaign was on the Rush Limbaugh radio program. For three hours every day Limbaugh urged his millions of listeners to buy Snapple which they did in droves. When Quaker Oats purchased the company, they immediately cancelled the Limbaugh contract citing the conservative theme of the radio program and specifically Limbaugh's stance on LGBTQ issues. Limbaugh wasted no time telling his fans that the new owners of Snapple despised him AND them, the listeners. Immediately practically every Limbaugh fan stopped buying Snapple in protest. Sales crashed nationwide. Limbaugh continued to bang the drum against Quaker Oats/Snapple for months, just to remind the fans of what happened. As you noted, Quaker Oats never recovered from this gaffe and eventually had to sell the failing brand.

    Specifically the "Snapple Lady" would pop up a lot in my fast forwarding in the 90s. In the 2000s and later I've watched these tapes as time capsules with friends (Atlanta 1996 Olympics and Windows '95 ads are also all over the place) we've talked about how good these spots were. They put a Snapple vending machine in someone's office!
