On Our Times - St. Paisios the Athonite

  • A memorable word by one of the greatest men of the 20th century: St. Paisios the Athonite (+1994). Here he exhibits his pain of heart for his fellow man, his boldness in speaking the truth in love, his spiritual illumination on things to come.
    Read the text here: apantaortodoxia...
    The icons from the thumbnail are from Dionysiou Monastery on Mount Athos:
    athosweblog.co...
    athosweblog.co...
    _______
    St. Paisios says:
    We have to witness our faith with boldness, because if we continue to be silent we’ll have to answer in the end. In these difficult days each must do what’s in their power. Leave what’s out of their power to the will of God. In this way our conscience will be clear.
    It’s unseemly to become angry in one’s own defense. Resisting evildoers is another matter, however, when it’s in defense of serious spiritual matters, when our holy faith, Orthodoxy, is concerned. Then it’s your duty. To think of others, to counter the blasphemers in order to defend one’s neighbor-this is pure, because it is carried out in love.
    If you want to help the Church, then try to mend your own ways, rather than others’. In straightening yourself out you straighten out a particle of the Church. If everyone were to do that then the Church would be in perfect order. But today’s people attend to everything under the sun, only not to themselves, because it’s easy to teach others, while mending one’s own ways requires effort.
    A Christian must not be a fanatic but have love in his heart for all.
    He who throws words around carelessly, even true words, does evil.
    And if someone receives the mark unknowingly?
    It’d be better to say “uncaringly.” How can one be unknowing, when everything is crystal clear? And if a person doesn’t know, then he should become interested and find out. By accepting the mark, even unknowingly, a person loses Divine Grace and gives himself up to demonic influence.
    Behind the “perfected credit card system,” behind “computerized security," lurks worldwide dictatorship and the yoke of the Antichrist: And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads. And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom.
    Our time is like a bubbling and steaming cauldron. One needs temperament, audacity, courage. Take care not to be caught unprepared, if something is to happen. Start getting ready now so that you’ll be able to resist difficulties.
    There is no spiritual life without sacrifice.
    Look after your health, but not to the degree where you begin to bow down before your peace and well-being. I’m not asking anyone to throw themselves headlong into dangerous adventures, but you have to have at least a bit of heroism, my brother!”

    Please pray for me. I accepted Christianity as the only path worth following about 3 years ago, and 3 months ago I had to leave my Evangelical congregation due to being convinced that Christ's Church is not to be found in Protestantism but rather in Holy Orthodoxy. Much to my chagrin, I have found only lukewarmth. I believe the words of St. Paisios are true, but I have not found a parish or spiritual father. May the Lord have mercy on me for all of the time I've wasted, and may He guide me to where I will find wisdom and discernment.

      I hope you're okay, wherever you are. May you stay safe and strong out there. May you take care of yourself, and others, as much as you can. I pray whatever happens to you, may you fight the Good Fight and keep the Faith. If you can't find any churches near you, try to listen to Services online. Also try to read and listen to the Church Fathers. If there are no Churches near you, then be the Church. Remember, you are the Temple of God. God Bless you. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have Mercy upon us, sinners.

I take great pleasure in listening to him, but this words will never be untrue (except for the antisemitic parts of course)

    This was excellent. How would I respond to those Orthodox who claim that these prophesies of St Paisios are essentially from evangelical Protestants in Greece & not from the saint? There’s an Orthodox channel called Theoria that claims this.

    I don't think that they don't excommunicate out of indifference. I think it has to do with money and status. Unfortunately, the people with the most money in society are usually the most worldly and the least godly. They are the goats; they are living sinful lives, but since they attend church and donate the money to keep the church going, many priests will not say anything to them.
    I've had conversations with priests in several different churches about this ( on the side, not in front of anyone), and asked him why he said " this or that" when it clearly is the opposite of what the Bible says. I always get a similar answer, " Noone believes that anymore ". " People would become angry if I said that and stop coming. Then the church would close due to lack of donations" or " Mr or Mrs. So and so would be very angry if I said that, and I'd hear about it after the sermon ". I've been on stewardship committees and other church committees ( I no longer am), and I realized that in each parish there are a few wealthy families that keep the parish running. These people make it clear to the priest whenever their own " pet sins" are touched on, and it is made clear, that if they get offended, they will speak to the bishop and the money 💰will stop coming in. So, it isn't indifference, it's keeping an eye on the main chance as they say. The sheep are usually poor; the goats are rich, and by paying in their money, they are like the Bible pharisees: they get bragging rights, they feel they are earning their place into Heaven, they can make sure by being in charge of what is preached, that they will not be made to feel uncomfortable.

      These are very real and understandable temptations. But of course, we will all be judged at Judgment Day: who did you put first in your life? Did you live faithfully to what I commanded you? Lord help us all to have the courage to be faithful even if we lose all material benefits.

    • @wmnoffaith1
      @wmnoffaith1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@OrthodoxWisdom exactly. We must all strive to put God first, even if it means being poor, or losing our lives; and priests must be honest with people about sin. Better to preach the whole counsel of God, and have a smaller congregation of 50 devoted to Jesus, than to tell people what they want to hear and have a rich parish of 500.

    True only one have a physical death but the heart,soul and holy spirit is always alive waiting for his next reincarnation,within another shelf
    We are only here to learn through life experience as one specific life lesson,live in this world but not be part of it, you have to let go of our so called free will and do the will of God the father,the son and the mother everything is already shared and told and life is pre-destinated before the world was born but who here and now can be silent and listen to feel the holy spirit,an inner voice but be aware there is a thin line between the ego and heart,
    Wish you all a blessed and compassionate moment in the light of a new day,everything is already within you not outside,we cannot serve two teachers roy

    Honestly so much has come to pass which St. Paisios said, yet his prophecies are very worldly. What matters if Greece retakes Constantinople if the New Earth is upon us? I think St. Paisios is referring to the anti christ of our time and its ultimate demise. It's why many in the USSR thought Chernobyl was a sign of the end of the world but it really was a sign that the anti-christ USSR would end soon.

    • @cfroi08
      @cfroi08 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @AlyoshaBosha well friend, I do not do that. I believe the end of the world will be the end of secular democracy as we know it today. That is just as physical and metaphysically shattering. That we ourselves will bring Christ back into the world. I believe it is not a coincidence mass degeneracy appeared along mass media and recording. Generations after us will see what progress brings and they will have terabytes of data to view. Maybe this new golden age ends with Christ returning? But for now, Orthodoxy is growing and the biggest heresy (Protestantism) are dying.
