  • Fr. Maximos Constas is Senior Research Scholar at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA, an internationally acclaimed Patrologist, and a monk of the Monastery of Simonopetra on Mt. Athos. His lecture series entitled Confession and Spiritual Direction; Mary Greeted Elizabeth: Witnessing Christ in the World Today; The Life and Teaching of St. Maximos the Confessor; Concentrated Prayer; Prayer and the Heart in an Age of Technology and Distractions; Lord and Master of My Life: Reflections on the Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian; Counsels on the Holy Priesthood; The Pedagogy of Grace; Saints, Sanctity and the Life of St. Raphael of Brooklyn are available here at Patristic Nectar Publications. In this interview Fr. Maximos unpacks and reveals the godly legacy of one of the great elders of the contemporary age: Father Aimilianos of Simonopetra.

I am Aimilianos nephew. My mother and Aimilianos were half-siblings. I had a chance to visit him in Greece and spend three weeks at Meteora with the monks and my grandfather in the 70's. His father, my grandfather Christos worked at the gift shop and we would come up and down in the basket. I also spent time with Aimilianos at Rochester, Mn. That was the last time I saw him.

It's been a major impact on the people who visit and learn from them

I am familiar of another one ; the women’s monastery in Maryland ( St Nina’s) I enjoy listening to another one of your Uncle’s spiritual Children lately on TH-cam :H.G.Bishop Emelianos of Meloa . Love the way he explains your uncle’s teachings of St Hesychios from the Philokalia on Nepsis . He also has all great love and respect for his spiritual father Elder Aimelianos. Nice to meet you

Having only my been orthodox just over a year, it’s a comfort to get to experience a living saint as he clearly was. The first moment I set eyes on him on utube, it was a broadcast without subtitles and as an Englishman we aren’t renowned for learning other languages, yet I was drawn to him and was blessed by him without understanding a word he said! Josh. The Church in its original form is Orthodoxy. It is the closest to Christ and his Apostles. I too am a Catholic and still practising, but never knew anything about the Orthodox church until I visited the Holy Mountain in 2014. If ever you get a chance to visit Mount Athos, you will see how life changes. Some of the monks you meet there will take you on a trip of a lifetime to the Highest heavens and bring you back to where you are and remind you constantly that life here on earth is just a passage.

@@katherine3486 Thanks Catrina. Until I was 30 I never knew anything much about Orthodoxy. I come from the South of India where the majority are Catholics who practise the West Syriac liturgy of the Orthodox Church. My visit to the Holy Mountain in 2014 was the biggest wake-up call. Again, even to become an Orthodox one needs a special invitation from the Lord because to be an Orthodox, one needs to be chosen. If the Lord allows, I will. As of now, John Climacus is leading my life. My favourite is the Ladder.

If only we would have known Fr Maximos was nearby - God keep and bless you dear Maximos! Perhaps as you visit, your prayer for these parishes will effect a true change to the Orthodox Faith and humility which is somehow not understood. We honor and praise God for Father Maximos' work in translation for us as we need this teaching so desperately ! I "met" Elder Aemilianos (1986 as seminary student) as I prayed from his sermon "Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me.." for the first time, and was pierced in heart and body with the Holy Spirit's power and wept three days after. What power in his prayer for us, and how blessed we were to partake of this grace of His Spirit! O wonderful lover of Mankind - Lord Jesus Christ - help us understand our Holy Faith without the influence of prideful arrogance that separates us from each other so easily as converts.

The Psalms are usually not read at the Antiochian Orthodox Liturgy nor at many...the psalms at the beginning of our Divine Liturgy "wash away" the world's "dust" of the week as we approach the Kingdom of God with its people offering themselves with Christ's own self-offering. We await the transforming of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in the sanctification of our Gifts and His Divine Energies filling us with our reception, and humble prayer accompanying. Amen O Lord have mercy on us, through the prayers of Saintly Elder Aemilianos whose anniversary of repose is approaching May 9th!
